It's actually kind of fascinating how this series manages to fumble itself.
First, the pros: it's gorgeous, has a very interesting setup, has a similar feeling to Puella Magi Madoka Magica (a positive in my book) at times, and seems like the type of show that would be really impactful for an audience of young teens. It makes a valiant attempt to explore dark yet realistic themes.
The cons: The story is a disaster. A large quantity of the episodes are dedicated to recapping the story and reemphasizing information they have already hand-fed to the watcher, yet the show fails to answer even the most basic
...
questions it presents. There are constant twists and turns that are basically breezed by and not interrogated in any way beyond the most absolute surface level. Just when it seems like the show is going to go into one of these very interesting plot points, it pivots. It's frustrating to watch, to say the least. As a person who loves interesting world building, the way that Wonder Egg seems so uninterested in its own world is...odd. The show feels like it's a rough draft that somehow reached the final stages of production without anyone providing any feedback.
The mixed feelings: the characters are all distinct, but the show's attempts to "deep dive" into their characters is quite lacking. There was so much missed potential there for a show that seems to want to be focused in on character exploration.
Also, the trope of "hot masc girl wishes every one knew she was straight, wishes she was more feminine so those sapphics would stop hitting on her" is a trope that makes me laugh every time. I just couldn't take the character of Momoe seriously at all. Straight people problems are hilarious.

Eh.
I picked this up because I was fascinated by the decision to put Dazai Osamu into an isekai anime. I'm a big fan of his works (listen, I literally named my cat after him. I have a Dazai Osamu jr in my home) but I'm a little picky about depictions of him (whatever Bungo Stray Dogs has going on is not my jam). The first few episodes made me nearly cry laughing. The character design, the way he carries himself, and the way he speaks really feels like the author is deeply, deeply invested in this man's life story. The concept itself is hilarious
...
and the execution during the first few episodes really is top tier.
After episode 3, things kinda of get repetitive...to the extent that I am not sure if this is a show worth finishing.
The worldbuilding is cute but generic isekai garbage and the side characters are similarly generic isekai fare. The saving grace of the show is, well, the dude who wrote The Setting Sun is comic relief and his suicidal and self-deprecating tendencies are dialed up to reflect that. I did enjoy the insistence that the only thing that could prevent Dazai Osamu from actually dying is isekai antics, but not really much else beyond that.
As for the storyline...well. It's a story. There is a plot. There are definitely 12 episodes of content here. I had desperately hoped it would end completely in episode 12, but to my chagrin, more episodes are needed to wrap up all the little plot points introduced near the end.
If you want a little laugh, go for this one. If you have ever wondered what Dazai Osamu might be like in an isekai, go for this one. If you want something gripping and interesting...maybe pass on this one. Ultimately: it's fine.

If I don't rewatch all available seasons of this show ever 6 months, I go crazy. That's how serious I am about this show.
Don't go in expecting plot. Here is the thing about the show: it takes some pretty major departures from the manhua. By that, I mean that it has a different plotline and timeline entirely. Don't fear, though! The show's plot is cute and is a good way to adapt the gag comedy style of the manhua into a show. That being said, it's still mostly gag comedy loosely strung together by the show-only plotline.
This is a 10/10 watch for anyone who enjoys
...
mythical creatures/cryptids in modern urban settings doing goofy stuff. The comedy is pretty top tier (to me). Hell is literally just Australia in this universe, folks. That's good stuff right there.
If you are not into gag comedy shows or the idea of cryptids like, paying rent and having part time jobs, this isn't for you. If you gulp down modern roommates au fanfics of fantasy series like they're water, this is ABSOLUTELY for you.

Wow...just. Wow.
I will start this out frankly: I have not read the manga, so I have no point of comparison for this. i went into this ONA not knowing anything about it.
It certainly starts off a bit on the slow side, which oddly works in its favour. If the idea of a slice of life anime in which there is a mammoth-sized (or I guess, UFO sized) sword of Damocles dangling overhead, yet every character goes about their life almost entirely ignoring it, this is the anime for you. The overall odd feeling of the first few episodes, with the characters and Tokyo as
...
a whole only somewhat acknowledging the danger around them as they continue their daily lives, really sets an interesting tone. I couldn't help but think that it's worryingly accurate to what a real life alien invasion scenario would look like...actually, on second thought, it's exactly how it would play out in real life. (spoiler alert): Especially the USA bombing the UFO part.
After the first few episodes, the story REALLY takes off. Episode 16, for me, was a masterpiece. I finished the episode and stared blankly at my screen for a few minutes. Episode 17 unfortunately pales in comparison, and while its function is necessary to end the story on a bittersweet but hopeful note, it honestly could have concluded with episode 16.
I was blown away with the character design overall. Every character is incredibly distinct while retaining a coherent art style. The way different facial features are drawn adds a ton of personality to the show. There is also a great diversity in body shapes, which helps make the character design feel realistic.
The animation is consistently good and interesting to watch. It has a polished feeling you usually only get in one-shot movie anime. Even if you aren't interested in the plot, it's at the very least a feast for the eyes.
I really think this is an anime that everyone should give a shot. It has just the right amount of horror, slice-of-life, comedy, drama, and hopefulness. I don't know how this isn't one of the top shows of the season.

Platonic Chain is fascinating for several reasons. At its core, the story is about the mundane lives of several teen girls in Shibuya in a "slightly more advanced" version of the early 2000s. The whole story has a sense of oddness to it, since it has all of the makes of a tech-based dystopian horror, and yet the young characters go about their daily lives in stride. While the Platonic Chain tech in the show is new to the girls as well, they adapt to it quickly and incorporate it into their lives in a way that is very deeply human and very accurate to
...
how we interact with new technology today.
As a watcher in 2024, I was struck by the horror of how everything in the show (made in 2002 mind you) and all of its dystopian elements are just...life in 2024. The most horrifying aspects of the show (and the parts that characters react the most to) are just...ever present in life now. The farther we get from 2002, the more accurate Platonic Chain is at depicting real life than it is at depicting.a dystopian future, because we already live in it. It's mundane for the characters in Platonic Chain, much like how constant surveillance is mundane for us too.
The rough early 2000s 3D animation is charming. It reminds me of older Playstation video games and all of their poorly-rendered glory. Character designs reflect how much care was put into designing characters that feel fully-fleshed out and can communicate aspects of character personality to viewers within the short minutes we have with them. A lot of love clerly went into rendering the main characters, and I think that's precious. It's a fantastic blast from the past visually and will make anyone with nostalgia for the y2k era smile.
Each episode of Platonic Chain is mostly eaten up by the OP and ED. The ED is always a live-action music video of a late 90s or early 2000s girl group song with cuts of the main characters interspersed. Seeing Baby VOX in an anime is a bit of trip for me, haha. I can see how it may annoy some viewers, but I found it contributed to the charming nature of the show. I LOVE watching early 2000s girl group music videos, so perhaps that's why I loved it so much...

I loved this so much, I watched it all the way through twice in a row.
At first, the animation was a bit difficult to watch. I found the 3d character models on the 2D background to be disorienting. Once I got over that, I found myself really appreciating the distinctive art style. The character models could have been a bit different (the face models seem like they can't ever look "ugly," which means some of their expressions are a bit unrealistic) but for what this is, it really worked.
Each storyline is unique and it's really interesting how each character feels fleshed out within
...
the tight 6 minutes we get to see them. Artiswitch does an incredible job giving watchers everything they need to know in order to identify with the characters in the very, very brief amount of time they appear on screen.
That being said, I almost dropped the show entirely because episode 1 was Haruka's story and I just couldn't take it seriously. Starting off the show by asking the brave question "what if woman WANTS to fit into gender aesthetic expectations but doesn't feel like she can because she is tall" is an...interesting choice. The show really saved itself in episode 2 with Mana's wish to free herself from these expectations and put herself out there as an alt singer. From there, it only goes up with realistic portrayals of problems people face on a day to day basis, plus the catharsis of breaking free from social expectations or finally coming out of ones shell. Rewatching the series helped me take Haruka a little bit more seriously.
My favourite is by FAR Tiara's episode. Artiswitch really handles Tiara's character well and portrayed a realistic situation that many young queer women experience with their never-actually-dating-but-kind-of-situationship-but-mostly-a-crush person. It's an episode that hurts so good. I almost wish Tiara's story could be expanded into a full series, but maybe that would crush the beauty of Artiswitch: an anime that is, at its core, short and hits you straight to the gut.

This short film is pure eyecandy-- adorable character designs, fantastic animation, great background and worldbuilding design...not only that, but it also includes a super catchy song! The dialogue between the two characters flows naturally and gives you a very solid idea of their personalities and their friendship in just 3 minutes. Dialogue and personality-wise, they are shockingly realistic in that sort of way where you can imagine meeting them in real life. To be honest, there is not much to the story at all. It's short and sweet while giving you a lot to chew on through the setting. I've never been more impressed by
...
a short animation. I highly recommend checking this one out...after all, it just required about 3 minutes and 40 seconds of your time!
