First things first, for the sake of this review, I will not be touching upon any controversy or allegations regarding Rudy being a [redacted].
Let's start with positives then climb down to the negatives for this review.
Art - 9/10
Art and animation is fantastic, I like effort Studio Bind put into it to make you feel immersed to the world. I'll be looking forward to any projects they'll handle in the future.
Sound - 7/10
Sound is mostly okay, it's not bad but I don't think it's a very good song in my ears.
Unfortunately, that's
...
where the good stuff ends, now we'll be traversing into the bad.
Story - 5/10
This cour isn't particularly good to be honest. The first episodes were fun and interesting but everything after that was meh. Rudy and Eris' adventure was never fun nor interesting for me and I had to force myself to watch it since I'm sucker for completing anime no matter how bad it is, I'll only make an exception if the anime is out-of-this-world bring.
I did enjoy its worldbuilding and magic system but I didn't like the latter as much as the former due to being too simplistic, I wish they didn't use a class system to simplify how powerful magic is, I'd prefer different types of magic with no classification on how devastating it is but hey, that's just me.
There are some "questionable" scenes in this story that doesn't add anything to the anime except to lower it's quality. We could've gone without those yet the studio decided to. Why? because of fanservice maybe? Who knows.
The anime sadlydances around one of it's themes of becoming a better person. This is one of the two main gripes I have with Mushoku Tensei: it says it's anime about being better but time and time again, this show plays serious moments about one of the MC's disgusting traits of pervertedness into a comedic one and hell, he was even rewarded for it (Tsundere punches don't count, they're more for a comedic effect.). I thought we were supposed to take this anime seriously? I don't care for perversion in anime but again, we're supposed to take this seriously.
This has the unfortunate side effect of the show being hypocritical as Mushoku Tensei says Rudy will be a more tolerable person yet the very behavior he's supposed to change is rewarded. There was the scene with Sylphy which did give me hope but then it went downhill from there. What I was looking for was something or anything to remind Rudy what he was doing was wrong or punish him but 11 eps later, we get none. I feel betrayed. Maybe it'll be raised in the future, maybe it won't, either way why wait this long to address this issue?
(Note: I think Paul is a good person to tell Rudy this, you know why.)
The show mishandles trauma and gives bad advice. It's actually just go outside with a person you trust, that'll totally fix your fear of the outside. No advice is always better than bad advice.
Characters - 1/10
This is probably the worst element of Mushoku Tensei so far. The characters are okay but when we grow to care and love them, they just get replaced by new ones and will take a long time to see again. I grew to like Zenith yet she was replaced with different people whom I don't know yet, pretty disappointing. From this point, I'll be saying characters I have a problem with:
Paul - The development of this character is a legit "Dude, trust me." We don't see him repenting for his actions nor redeeming himself and we are left to believe the latter and the former. Why they didn't show it is a mystery, they wasted a good character arc.
Rudy - Our MC that we were suppose to be giving a second chance yet every time we do, he just disappoints us. Gee, I wonder how many more chances we'll have to give him throughout the series. I get it old habits die hard but we don't need to see him being a pervert almost every episode. We are supposed to cheer for him because other people are worse and more perverted than him. Really? That's the best motivation we're given? The resolvement of his trauma and agrophobia is nearly a "Dude, trust me." like Paul, I get that Roxy travels with him a lot in the town but I doubt that simple words and horseride can convince someone who probably never left his room for 20 years.
Eris - Just a hotheaded tsundere who wants to learn magic. That's it.
Enjoyment - 2/10
The "questionable" scenes overpower my enjoy of the other aspects I really adore like worldbuilding and such. It doesn't help that the show jokes around subjects it's supposed to take seriously
Overall - 5/10
Without the "questionable" scenes, this anime would only get a 7 to be perfectly honest with you. Many people praise it as the "Grandfather of Isekai" yet it lacks good writing and story, if this is the bar fans set up in the future of anime, then I fear for the quality of the anime our descedants will watch.
Thanks for reading this far! I appreciate it a lot!
