TL;DR I think it surpassed the first in terms of art, story and audio. Sure the ending is anti-climatic but so is life. It's about the journey we went through with Joe and the characters not the destination.
As a sequel to the seemingly case closed happy ever after story that was Megalo box season 1. I was afraid that a 2nd season would leave a sour taste in my mouth.
The opening episode was one of surprise for me and it expertly set the tone and pace for the season. As with the first season Megalo Box was refreshing in the combat sports fighting anime scene.
...
instead of superhuman fights like baki or kengan it took more care to realism and was still entertaining with the amazing art and sounds and season 2 put that refreshing factor into overdrive. Like seriously, the sounds were amazing.
I didn't enjoy the characters as much as i did in the first season and the flow of the season felt slightly slow but that's expected for a anime that's so art and story driven.
Nomad: Megalo Box 2 was also refreshing for its takes on racism, and anti-corporation views. It gave good explanation of the sensitive topics in a way that wasn't pandering to either extremes
The biggest criticism I can give would be the fights and final fights. Although I understand that too long of a fight would be repetitive and boring. It was also rather repetitive and boring to end fights within a few rounds. The way Joe wins his fights were rather predictable as well, slip and counter. Sure, there isn't anything wrong with this but as an anime i think that giving the main character multiple ways of ending the fights would be more enjoyable. The camera work was also in my opinion too narrow. I would love to more wide shots, seeing both boxers showcasing their talents. The final fight was simply too short. I understand that the point was to show that a fairy tale ending isn't always a guarantee but a final match with only 2 rounds is sad. I would be mad if i was one of the paying spectators.
Overall. I give it a 8/10 which was better than what I gave for season 1 7/10
