TL;DR: It's literally not even 20 pages long, you should read it regardless of anything!
Fujimoto's collection of Infinity Stones just got expanded with yet another one-shot hit. Props to Tooda too, who drew the one-shot.
And the funny thing is... you might consider this whole review to be very ironic, if you disagree with me on what this one-shot wanted to tell us.
The art of overanalyzing, and seeing things that aren't there. You've definitely seen it at some point in your life. The earliest example of this that I remember was in elementary school: the literature teachers. You know how literature teachers loooooove to dissect any
...
and all of the sentences that exist in a story...looking for some astonishing, profound meaning behind them? It's not unusual that they end up with something that is possibly much more complex than what the writers themselves thought of when they wrote those exact sentences. And sadly, more often than not, we never find out whether the author meant to express what the fans deduced.
Did by any chance some anime/manga/videogame/tvshow/movie fandom cross your mind when you read this? I know I could name a few.
Today, overanalyzing like this makes people set their expectations way too high for the authors, which almost always undoubtedly ends with the fans being disappointed. The same way everyone was disappointed with the MC's second song.
Of course, there's a possibility that Fujimoto is throwing shade at his own fans too. When he was writing "Fire Punch", "Chainsaw Man", "Look Back", "Goodbye Eri"... he might've never thought of the things that the fans "realized" from their analysis of his work. He might've just been writing stories that he considered to be solely engaging to read. Based Fujimoto I say.
This one-shot is not carried by it's plot, nor it's art, nor it's characters. It is carried by it's unique main message. And, well, I'd say that it manages to present the message very well in it's mere 18 pages.
JUST LISTEN TO THE DAMN SONG. IT'S NOT THAT DEEP.

In my eyes, the anime version of "Spy x Family" failed to portray it's story faithfully.
As a person who adores the Spy x Family manga, I'm sadly very underwhelmed by what the anime presented. The whole anime feels like it belongs much more in the "Slice of Life" category, instead of the advertised (and expected) Action/Comedy genre.
From way before the anime aired, I was beyond hyped for the adaptation. Few episodes passed by and I already felt something was off, but I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Now that the whole season is over, I can confidently say that the issue lies
...
in the weird PACING.
The pacing is just too slow, considering that most episodes each adapted a single, 20-or-less page chapter. How do they manage to extend those 20 page chapters into whole episodes? By adding boring unnecessary fluff that, frankly, doesn't improve anything, but rather further pushes Spy x Family into the Slice of Life genre.
This bad pacing also genuinely affected the comedy. Nearly none of the jokes were funny. I was constantly left with an "here's a joke, now laugh" impression. I never felt like this while reading the manga. The anime's comedic timing is just that odd.
Now, all of the things I say might not even be an issue to some of you. It all comes down to what kind of a story you expect to see from this anime.
YES, the animations were fantastic. YES the art looked great. Nothing less expected from a WIT x Cloverworks collab. The music was alright, and the voice acting cast is great (not that they had much to say or express, to be honest...). But all that means nothing when there's almost no plot.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but at least half of this season was a snoozefest.
I still have faith that the studios will adapt the future parts of the story better, but I did expect a faster, more fitting pace for this first part of the adaptation. At the moment, I am sadly disappointed.

I wish to provide some perspective as someone who loves the show and it's first 2 seasons, but has mixed feelings on this one.
The third season of "Kaguya-sama, Love is War" has a very impactful moment!... And that's mostly it.
It's not really memorable besides that one thing.
To me, the comedy wasn't nearly as good as in the first 2 seasons. It went mostly like this:
Imagine being in a room, with a friend of yours, and several other people, who are friends of your friend. Now imagine them talking to eachother, joking about some topic that you dislike and/or that you don't know anything about...
...
You're acting like you find it funny. Do you see the awkward smile that you're making? That was my reaction to many of the skits in this season. The jokes just didn't land a lot of times.
Also, a number of times the jokes were merely repetition of funny moments from previous seasons. I don't know about you, but some of them did feel overplayed.
There definitely were a few great moments, maybe even episodes, but that's nothing compared to what we used to get before.
Gone are the days of Miyuki's and Kaguya's amazing and hilarious dynamics, banter, 5D chess moves and Death-Note-like mind games. There was almost none of that this season, sadly.
One thing that hasn't changed is Papa Shirogane. Whenever he appears on the scene you know you will love it. Bless his hilarious soul!
Too much time was given to side characters and new characters instead of the main duo. The duo who is supposed to develop the most this time. Their development was put aside until almost the end of the season.
The way the readers hyped this season actually negatively affected all the fun of the grand finale. It really felt like I was supposed to bear with all the episodes purely for the final one.
Of course, this all is not to say that Ultra Romantic was plain bad, it was nowhere near that. It's just weaker in comparison to the previous seasons. I didn't give it a pretty high rating for nothing.
