When it comes to 'peak fiction' - it rarely gets better than this.
Having read the Vinland Saga manga well beyond this point - I can safely say that the second season of the anime accurately, and engagingly portrays the tragedies, struggles & small wins of this beautiful story - the character development in general is probably the best I've ever seen in any story, ever.

the first season, and accesses an entirely new side to Thorfinn - the compassionate, logical, good-natured person we were cruelly robbed of due to Askeladd's antics. The Vinland Saga you think you'll miss is replaced by something far deeper.
If you still want some action - don't fret too much; VS2 encompasses some excellent fighting scenes (no spoilers), including those with newly introduced characters, who have unique, interesting fighting styles which viewers are bound to find engaging.

In short, provided you've watched S1, and you don't require constant battle scenes, the second season of Makoto Yukimura's Vinland Saga is a MUST watch! The psychological impact this show has is nothing short of extraordinary. I struggle to find a flaw in this masterpiece, and as such rate it a 10/10.
