NO SPOILERS
(I don't like long-ass reviews, written by people who act like they know it all, so this is just a short one, written with my personal opinion)
Since the moment I've heard the LN is going to get an anime adaptation I was very excited. I was expecting the best-possible art, sound, cinematography and basically everything.
But I must honestly say I was expecting too much and in the end was rather disappointed.
Story: 7
The rich and detailed world of the LN/WN was almost completely obliterated. There was almost no world-building in the anime and everything felt really shallow and superficial. I can't even describe how
...
dissapointed I was by this. There was innumerable amount of entire scenes, POVs, side stories and monologues skipped - most of which were supposed to deepen the world, make it feel real and genuinely make you care for everything that was going on.
The story that was supposed to be about Six-Sided World and Rudeus, who was given a second chance to live a better life in another world, became solely the story of Rudeus. I'm sure it wouldn't be wrong to say the anime is an adaptation just of a half of the entire story.
But as for Rudeus' life-journey, I won't spoil anything here. Even with a lot of scenes skipped and shortened it's still a really great one.
Art: 9
I must admit the art and the animation were the best things in the entire anime. It was really amazing to see everything that was only described in the LN with my own two eyes. Some scenes were admittedly not as pretty and detailed as other ones, but I think the BD could correct this. The fight scenes were especially nicely animated.
There are also almost no CG scenes (even the monsters are drawn by hand), so that's undoubtedly a great plus.
There was honestly just one scene, that seemed really out-of-place, but probably something, the director will sadly leave like that even in BD.
Sound: 8
I can think of a few scenes where the music wasn't quite fitting but other than that I've got no complains.
Characters: 8
I'm not going to write here in too much details about this.
The protagonist is a pervert, that's certain. But everything has it's reasons and despite that I still think, and going to claim, he's a greatly and mainly realistically written character who actually tries to change. The anime honestly doesn't capture this very well, but you can actually see in his monologues he really regrets many things.
The anime absolutely didn't do Sylphie justice. Her character arc was almost completely deleted, and so there's really nothing I could say here about her.
As saying anything more could be considered a spoiler, I will stop here.
Enjoyment: 9
Despite all my bitching and comparing it to the LN, I really enjoyed this anime. But that just as a LN reader. If somebody is reading this review (I doubt it) and haven't read the LN, I can't really guarantee you will like it as much as I did. But if you do, I'm sure you will like the original work even more.
Overall: 8
It could honestly be better. Much better. But it's by no means bad. The world feels rather shallow (at least compared to the LN), there are many details missing, but despite all that it still manages to capture - however incompletely - probably the most essential thing: The life of Rudeus Greyrat.
