So I went into this season with low expectations after seeing what was happening with the production. It was obvious that things were going to be severely rushed and pretty unpolished. I thought that maybe I should just forget about the animation quality (to an extent) and just enjoy the show for the story and comedy. There's a problem when there's no redeeming qualities in those departments either.
It's almost as if everything went wrong from start to finish in every department. Not only is the animation, art, compositing, color palette, and overall aesthetic just poor, but the direction is all over the place. Each episode
...
has a bad tendency to cut around to a bunch of events, losing any sense of focus. Not to mention that all of the charm that the first season had is gone. Everything feels very generic.
In terms of sound, everything but the voice acting sucks. The OST is a mix of new unremarkable tracks and stuff from the first season. Nothing memorable to be found there. The sound design is atrocious. From the same guy who did the sound design for Berserk 2016, this time he decided that every impact sound effect needs to be bass boosted and distorted as much as possible. It's super obnoxious.
So, overall, there's nothing truly good about this season. Every aspect of it is mediocre at its very best. It goes to show that a poor team and abysmal production schedule will lead to nothing but a disaster.

I was initially concerned when I had heard that Legend of the Galactic Heroes was getting a remake. The 1980s OVA series is one of the greatest anime of all time, so this version had some pretty big shoes to fill. My concerns were all blown away. I honestly can't believe the amount of hate this is getting. I honestly enjoyed this a little more than the OVAs.
The story is faithfully adapted from the first 8 chapters of the first book. Obviously, to compress the amount of events that happen into just 12 episodes, somethings were cut or shortened. This isn't necessarily a bad
...
thing, since the book's pacing wasn't always the greatest. The anime has included all of the details you need to know to understand the characters' ambitions and a brief idea on why the war started.
The designs might take a lot of time to warm up to, since the old designs were much more realistic and detailed. But, if you look past that, this show looks beautiful. From the expressive character animation to the beautiful backgrounds, the show's 2D aspect already looks pretty great. But, the thing that really caught my eye were the space battles. It's handled in CGI with 2D elements mixed in, which sounds like a horrible idea. Yet, Production I.G. has made some of the most beautiful CGI sequences you'll see in anime. The space battles could never be shown with the level of beauty and detail in the OVAs. It really felt like I was in the action, rather than watching from a screen. Which was something that the OVAs suffered from at times.
One of the things that was a little frustrating was the lack of variety in its soundtrack. The music was good, but sometimes it felt like I was listening to the same soundtrack over and over for each episode. It wasn't until episodes 11 and 12 where they really switched it up. Lets hope they have new music for the movies.
The characters are clearly different people without having over exaggerated personalities, which is something that a lot of anime suffer from. The characters are all intriguing in their own ways. Everyone's differences in political views and morals always keep the story going and it makes you think about it in the process. You can choose who you agree with.
I can't recommend this show enough to both new and old fans of the series. If you are an OVA watcher, keep an open mind. It's not a remake of the OVAs, but a remake of the books. And a good one at that. There is a slow point around episodes 10 and 11, but it makes the payoff all the more worth it. I enjoyed this a lot, and I look forward to the movies coming out in 2019.

I couldn't say that it's the perfect anime, but it's pretty damn close. The absolutely mind blowing story that this movie presented is handled in a way that even though you don't feel particularly sad, you still feel emotions. Just emotions. You don't exactly know why you feel this way. You just do. The characters don't feel cartoony. You feel like they're actually real, as are the people around them. The scenery is just... gorgeous. The sheer beauty and detail put into everything around the characters is just....absurd. The music was great. Each piece perfectly encapsulates what you feel watching this. My only complaint
...
is a section in the middle of the movie. Something that just isn't explained. Sure, you can interpret it as you wish, but it didn't exactly make sense. It never took away from the impact of it, but it didn't make a lot of sense. That is the only thing holding me back from giving this magnificent work a 10. If you haven't watched this, you should. It's an experience.

*THIS IS A SPOILER-FREE REVIEW OF THE 2011 ANIME ADAPTION OF HUNTER X HUNTER 2011*
Hunter x Hunter is an anime that pushes being a shonen and if anything is more like a seinen. It starts off slow, light-hearted, and a bit cheesy, but if you give this series time, trust me, you will love it. This series starts off almost PG level, but don't let that fool you, because it will get to a level of violence almost like Mirai Nikki. I personally cherish this show as it takes all of the tropes and cliches of a Shonen anime and completely deconstructs them. The characters

don't always win, and when they do, it is not through pure strength, but also strategy. Each arc feels completely different from the last, while still tying the story together into one nice package. The story is incredible, the animation blows me away (especially with this series being 148 episodes), the incredible soundtrack is a bit repetitive at the beginning of the series but that changes, and I cannot recommend this series enough. This is easily the best anime I've ever watched.
