Up until a few days ago, I had never even heard of this anime. I just randomly picked it up and started watching it with no expectations whatsoever... And it surprisingly turned out to be the best isekai anime I've seen in years.
The anime presented a fresh spin on the isekai theme. I've disliked the isekai genre for years. The only ones I actually enjoyed watching in recent years were Re Zero and Shield Hero, and I found the others I've watched to be either trash or boring. But then Mushoku comes along with a fresh take on the genre.
The protagonist isn't "transported" or "spawned"
...
into another world, but instead the protagonist is reborn in a new world from scratch as a baby, to two parents in the new world, and grows up in this new fantasy world from childhood. That's something I haven't seen before in the isekai genre. We see Rudy grow up from when he's a baby up until he's 10 years old in the first season. Much of S1 felt like a slice-of-life family drama, which happens to take place in a fantasy world. It almost reminds me of Dragon Quest V, one of my favourite RPGs, where we follow the protagonist from when he's a baby up until he's a father with kids.
The protagonist also happens to be a deeply flawed, morally questionable individual. It's a redemption story where someone who was a scumbag in his previous life (in his own words) gets a second chance to start over and become a better person in his new life. We see him go through a lot of character growth as a result. Which makes him a very interesting protagonist.
The artwork also looks amazing. And the music and sound is pretty good too. The story and character development was very gripping and enjoyable, especially for someone like me who was seeing it with a fresh pair of eyes, without any pre-conceived biases. Overall, it's a great show.
