Mayoiga is a show with a rocky start that continues down the path of mediocrity.
Story (5) - Perhaps the only thing Mayoiga had going for it was the story, and only for the first few episodes. The idea of a group trying to restart their lives in a new place is intriguing, and if it continued as slice of life, perhaps it would've stayed good. Unfortunately, it decided to take a 'mysterious, supernatural' turn for the worst. Thus spawning forced drama, boring and unfocused conversations between lifeless characters, and extreme absurdity.
Characters (4) - It tries to have a psychological element that just ends up falling
...
flat on it's face. In order to have a successful psychological story, there needs to be characters that are fleshed out enough for the audience to understand their thoughts and feelings. Here, we have nothing but stereotypical sob stories for not one, but multiple characters that create no actual emotions.
Out of a cast of about 30 characters, half of which are forgotten shortly after the first few minutes of the first episode, only about 10 or so of them get proper backstories. And even then, they are crammed into short spouts of the show. For the majority of them, the backstory never even resurfaces! The main character is the only one fleshed out, and that's after getting half way through the show. He is perhaps the only one that gets the proper treatment, and even then the ending isn't conclusive. There is not closure, making the show feel even more of a waste than before.
Art (3) - Nothing extravagant. There is use of CG in parts that look trite and, quite honestly, ruin any possible immersion.
Sound (4) - Four is for Forgettable. Not a single track worth mentioning, not even the opening or ending.
Enjoyment (6) - Perhaps I'm being too kind, but there's a part of me that was entertained. After deciding not to take it too seriously, the show became something to laugh at. It should be watched with a drinking game attached. For instance, a shot every time a character goes crazy/says something irrational for no reason. Every time a CG blob appears. Every time there's a backstory. That's the only possible way to enjoy this garbage.
Overall (5) - This is not something to watch seriously. It's something to have fun with. Something to laugh at. Something that highlights all the things anime shouldn't be. There are too many characters, a poorly executed and dumb story, and a disappointing ending. The way to said ending is dull. There's no suspense or horror, and the psychological elements are anything but. It's a waste of time.

This is based solely on this awful adaption, not the game.
Now, I've said this before and I'll say it again, I love Battle Royale premises. What I don't like is when the concept is completely butchered with poor characters, art and predictableness.
The story gets a 7, mostly because I'm just generous towards anything that involves a bunch of people that have to kill each other in order to survive. It takes place in a school where the characters are told by a cute little bear that they have to kill each other and then hold trials to try to guess who the kill was. If
...
they get it right, the killer dies. If they get it wrong, they all die except the killer.
I'll give the story props for being different in that regard, but honestly, it was done very poorly. The rules and the 'motivation' to kill the others were stupid, and I don't see why the characters were dumb enough to actually kill anyone. The trial scenes were the same with the main character always figuring out who it was. The way it was executed was laughable, as were the death scenes.
The pace was rushed. It became formulaic and boring, as I didn't care who died since the characters were just there to die anyway.
As for the art (4), well, it looked bad and out of place. Most of the character designs were horrifying and everything looked like it was copied and pasted from a game (OH WAIT, it was). And what I can't over look is the fact that the blood was pink. PINK. It looked ridiculous. The deaths of the killers after the trials also looked funny and out of place.
The music was alright. I liked the opening and ending songs, but they weren't anything special. Within the anime, there weren't any soundtracks that stuck out. Mediocre at best. 5.
The characters is where this show really suffers. They were introduced lamely and had one-dimensional, generic personalities. The main character, Naegi, was the worst, being your typical no personality character. The same goes for Kirigiri, who was supposed to be 'mysterious' but at the end of the day wasn't.
Monobear wasn't scary at all. I don't know why they decided to give him that voice, but it wasn't threatening, it was lame. So was his pathetic excuse of an explosion in the first episode.
The main villain and the ending was a surprise, I didn't see it coming. That being said, it would have been nice to see what it was like outside the school.
All in all, I didn't care who died or who did the killing because the characters were so one-dimensional. They all could have died, for all I care. 2, because of how awful they were handled.
Honestly, I feel bad for the game, because I've heard it was great. Unfortunately, the anime was atrocious.
Overall enjoyment was a 4, mostly because of the premise and the ending, which was the only thing that wasn't predictable. That's it.
Final Verdict: Just walk away. Run if you have to.

"I see dead people" - that kid from The Sixth Sense
I do too, kid, and they're pretty awesome, if I do say so myself.
Angel Beats has gotten a lot of love and I'm here to add to that love, as it was the first anime I ever watched (besides Pokemon) and was what got me into this addictive media. That being said, it's not without it's flaws.
The story (8) is set in purgatory - that place between heaven and hell - with a whole bunch of teens that had awful pasts. There they have the Afterlife Battlefront, full of said teens, that is against God.
...
Otonashi, our main guy, joins said group to fight against God and a mysterious girl named Angel.
It's a pretty good concept, with comedy and action scenes that are mixed together well. The only major downside is that it takes place in a school - of course - and only has teenagers except the NPC teachers. This makes it unrealistic and what makes it even more so is that some of the characters have powers, which don't really match the tone but whatever, it made for good action and funny scenes. Another annoying bit is the ending, which is sweet but leaves something to be desired.
The Art (9) is beautiful. It's crisp and the action scenes are easy to follow. The character designs are a bit clique but the overall art is great. The band scenes are also very well done.
Speaking of the band, the sound (9) is another high point to this anime. Girls Dead Monster was great both times around and the overall OST was beautiful. The opening and ending are also very well done. I couldn't skip them at all.
Now, the characters are both the best and worst thing about this anime. There are just too many to be expanded upon in just 13 episodes. I know this was originally supposed to be longer and I really wish it had stayed that way. The characters that do get expanded upon have tragic pasts that make you want to cry and they all seem to be important. The supporting characters provide good support, but I wish they all had backstories like the others.
The main character is very generic, as is Angel, but that didn't stop me from loving this. Characters - 8.
My overall enjoyment is a 10. I cried the first time I watched this. Granted, now that I watch it again, I have the whole nostalgic factor, which makes me love it even more. If you cry easily or just like sad backstories, this is for you.
Final Verdict: Not even Angels can compare.

Ah, another anime with a battle royale-esque plot just came out, but the question is, was it any good? Well, yes and no.
Since I'm a huge fan of battle royale, I feel inclined to watch anything that has any resemblance to it's basic plot (Future Diary, DanganRonpa, Btooom!, etc) and Akuma no Riddle did not fail me in the slightest.
Story (6) -
Akuma no Riddle is set in a class full of 12 assassins that have the main goal of killing Haru Ichinose in exchange for a wish to be granted. However, one of the assassins, Tokaku Azuma, decides to help protect Haru against the others.
It's
...
very episodic for the majority of the show. Each episode is based around a new assassin trying to kill Haru and Haru somehow living with the help of Tokaku. This set up makes it very predictable, but doesn't make it any less interesting. Since it can be compared to so many other story lines, the story is nothing extremely original. Nevertheless, it never fails to be entertaining enough for you to keep watching.
Also, the ending was very disappointing, at least for me. Allow me to quote someone very important, who points out something that this anime totally ignores at the end.
"People die when they are killed." -Shirou Emiya (Fate/Stay Night)
I do so hate it when stories neglect this.
Art (7) -
The character designs were one of the best things about this anime. Each looked completely different than the rest and they all looked really cool. The rest of the art was good, but nothing extraordinary.
Sound (6) -
Nothing really popped out when it came to the music within the show. The opening was good but nothing amazing. The endings are what really stood out, as there was an ending for each assassin when the episode was about them. They corresponded with the character and had really awesome music/visuals. Beyond the endings, the soundtrack was decent.
Characters (8) -
With a huge cast such as this, it would be hard to give them all the same amount of screen time or different character traits. However, this anime excels at giving them each their own backgrounds and quirks. Each assassin also has different wishes that are mentioned and expanded upon, as their wishes are the driving force for trying to kill Haru. The only one that didn't have that much originality was the main character, Tokaku. She was a tsundere. Thankfully she actually had a personality, as she loved Haru and had a past that haunted her enough to give her emotions.
Another important thing to mention is that the anime is considered yuri. However, the yuri factor isn't very prevalent. Sure, there was some hugging and group bath time but nothing really happened beyond that. That's alright with me but if you're a yuri fan, you might be disappointed.
The romance was left open-ended. However, it can be assumed that Haru and Tokaku do start dating, or at least remain very close friends. So, romance fans might also be disappointed.
Enjoyment (8) -
I'm a sucker for stories about characters trying to kill other characters. It's just something I'm into, don't judge me. If you like an entertaining story with great characters (and character designs) as well as some decent twists, then you should give this a go. Don't expect anything amazing, but expect a fun ride.
Final Verdict: A classroom with female assassins + Battle Royale = ...DanganRonpa 2.0?

Alright, let's just get this over with...
The story (7) takes place in two towns; the one in the sea, and the one on the surface. Four of the main cast are from the sea but since their school closed, they go to school on the surface and endure the trials of discrimination because people are a**holes, but that isn't anything new. The fifth member of their melodrama band is a kid from the surface with a personality that is less than a square. But I'll get to that later. The idea of a town underwater was a good one, but it wasn't as expanded on
...
as it could have been. It was just kind of there, like mostly everything in this anime, as a plot device to somehow prolong the drama to make a full 26 episode show. No, longer does not always mean better, but since the second half wasn't bad, just unnecessary, I'll deal with it.
But let's just talk about that ending! (I'm not spoiling anything, don't worry)
The reason the anime's rating as a whole was so low is probably because of how it ended. Nothing was really tied up (except the hatred between the two sides and the sea people's hibernation) and it felt rushed. I'm not sure how an ending of an anime with so many slow and boring scenes could be rushed, but it was. None of the characters get with the person they were crushing on and it fell pretty flat.
What I did like was the fact that they added in the discrimination and the drama between the two towns. You could feel the tension when both were on screen. The way the characters took the discrimination made sense as well. Also, the pacing was okay, although it was so god awfully slow at times that some of the episodes never felt like they were going to end.
The art (10) was the best part about this anime. The animation was gorgeous. It was bright and colorful and the water was done beautifully. P.A. Works proved themselves yet again.
The sound (8) was very good too, although the two opening and endings are worthy of hitting the skip button. The songs were mostly light piano pieces that really helped set the mood. Yes, some songs were played a lot more than others but I liked the songs, so no complaints there.
The characters (5)
Now, here's where the most complaints will come from. The drama was so over the top and the crying never stopped that I just wanted to take out my earbuds, set down my phone and do something else with my life. The romance, or lack thereof, never got tied up and, honestly, most of the characters were annoying. There was little to no character development and in a show like this, you kind of need it. Let's go down the character roster, shall we?
Tsumugu - This is that personality-less square I mentioned early. The only one born on the surface that wants so desperately to live with the sea folk. He's not really there for anything more than a plot device for our dear Manaka to like and stir up drama. I liked him better in the second arc, although his character doesn't change. He annoyed me the most because he rarely said anything and when he did it was emotionless. Some of the lines came across as funny that way but for the most part he was a static, flat character. At least he was the only one that didn't succumb to crying.
Chisaki - She spent most of the time debating on who she liked and cried a good majority of it. Again, little to no character development, although she gets props for (kind of) choosing a man in the end.
Kaname - Honesly, I was surprised he got any screen time. At first, I figured he was just going to be that one character that fits the role of the 'fifth friend.' He even said that he was the odd man out, and it was mostly true. Although he was interesting because he was level headed and also had some character development in the end, he was mostly just there for a plot device to confuse Chisaki.
Manaka - She was the cute little girl that had something happen to her that was supposed to give her character development but did nothing but cause more tears from the main character.
Hikari - The mainest of main characters, who hardly changes at all. It was sad, watching him never really change. Yes, he began to accept the surface people but other then that, he stayed the same. The way he acted and the way he felt never strayed from how he began. He never stopped loving the same person though, so props to that.
Sayu and Miuna - The latter is Hikari's sister. Nothing changes with her either. She comes to terms in the end, but thats it. Sayu is Miuna's best friend and she actually got development. *applauds* She goes from kind of a jerk to totally in love with a certain character, and I can see that relationship actually fairing out.
No other characters are really worth mentioning. They were the biggest disappointment because in a show like this, they are the most important.
Overall enjoyment is an 8 because although the drama was over the top and irritating, and sometimes I was so mind-numbingly bored that I just wanted to quit, I did like it enough it get through it.
Final Verdict: boring + melodramatic underwater hellhole = SeaWorld (no offense to those who actually enjoy watching animals doing tricks in cages)

There will be a time in our lives when we'll undergo something so awful that we'll try desperately to block it from our memories.
Allow the pathetic excuse of an anime, Pupa, to be one of those awful experiences. I mean, it was listed as horror but I didn't realize it would be so scarring that I'd want to write it out of my mind completely. Seriously, it was so bad, it was almost laughable.
At first, the story seemed somewhat appealing but the fact that each episode was only 4 minutes long was a bit questionable. There was no way that a story such as this
...
could be condensed into just twelve, four minute episodes. That still rings true. Granted, if it was longer I would have dropped it in a heartbeat. The story gets a 4, since it could have been something. I guess I'm just feeling generous today.
The art was... different. It wasn't totally awful but it just didn't feel finished. It felt like they let a child paint it but the kid got bored and fell asleep. I feel the same way, young child. The gore was alright, but as a major fan of horror, I've seen better. Way better. Although, I will say that I liked how they were represented as bears when entering the past. Oh, how I wish I could enter the past and decide not to watch this. Art: 3, and only because I understand that child on a spiritual level.
The sound was so absolutely awful that... you know what, no. Can I just walk away right now? Can I just get up and leave? The sounds when she was chewing were so bad I can't even put it into words. There was an episode that was pretty much cannibal porn - it was literally her eating her brother for 4 minutes while she internally whimpered 'onii-chan' over and over until your ears started to bleed and your brain exploded from so much WTF it's not even funny.
The only redeeming quality when it comes to the music is the opening, which was just catchy enough for me to sit through for thirty seconds before all hell broke loose in the few minutes that followed.
I'll give the show credit for bringing forth a whole new kind of incest. She eats her brother, in the least sexual way possible. The characters were one dimensional, and there wasn't any effort in making them otherwise. Their pasts were interesting but not original.
Music and Characters get a 1.
Enjoyment: no.
Final Verdict: Burn it and all memories of it before your brain rots.

When asked what was the best anime of 2013, many would effortlessly say Attack On Titan. Well, I'm here to disagree because this is it - the best anime of 2013. In fact, I loved Psycho-Pass so much that I bought it. Yes, it was that good.
The story is, how do I say this, brilliant. It's an original and realistic futuristic world. It's completely different from any cop show that I've ever seen. The thing with [American] cop shows is that they're all the same, so PP was a breath of fresh air. It's dark and makes you think about how easy it is to
...
brainwash the human race. It asks the questions such as; What is justice, and can a system like this really pass it?
The characters all have to ask themselves these questions at some point. Some at a young age and some when they start/during their jobs. All characters are expanded upon with interesting pasts. They all have their own personalities and don't fall under certain archetypes, though it may feel like it in the beginning. The main character gets the most and best development, starting as a regular, brainwashed civilian and ending as someone tougher that understands what's wrong with their world. The villain is almost too pretentious but that didn't stop him from being one of the best villains I've seen in anime in a long time. However, not every character gets full development. Characters - 9.
The character designs weren't the best, seeing as the main character looked stoned beyond belief and Kagari looked like the most stereotypical guy ever (that didn't stop him from being my favorite character). Mostly all the other designs weren't anything new, but they weren't bad either. The rest of the art was detailed and dark like how it was supposed to be. Another 9 for this one.
The music was amazing. Both opening and endings were great (Op 2 and Ed 1 being my favorites). The tracks were memorable. The music gets 10,000,000. Uh, I mean, 10.
Overall enjoyment is definitely a 10 because of the original story, memorable music and great character development. Each arc was entertaining and the suspense never stopped. I never got bored. And what's even better? The fact that there's going to be a second season. I'm so ready.
Final Verdict: Blu-Ray, man (that means buy it)
BONUS: The English dub (which I watched after buying) was pretty good, although some of the voices didn't match the characters (*cough* *cough* Gino). All in all, the experience will be awesome no matter which way you decide to watch it.

I'm not sure if it's because I haven't seen any other reverse harems (except OHSHC) or because of the fact that I love cute boys that sing and dance to cliche'd pop music (hello, One Direction), but I enjoyed the hell out of this series. Now, by all means, it's definitely not a masterpiece, and nowhere near original, but for what it is, it's entertaining.
Speaking of originality, there is next to none when it comes to, well, everything. The story (which gets a 5, by the way) takes place in a school devoted to training singers and composers, with six boys and one girl to
...
choose which one she wishes to do the most. Although, she never really does choose, does she? In fact, it sets itself up as a harem, but really, it's more about friendship, and doesn't go beyond some 'sincere' words and a whole lot of blushing. That's fine and all, but the romance is... nonexistent. So if your looking for that, you won't find here.
Now, if I had the emotionless personality and the satanic looking eyes like her, guys would be lining up for me in no time, according to this. And they would be some of the most stereotypical guys, too. The main character, as said before, has no personality to speak of, but she still has that "special something," which, I guess?, is composing music. Her roommate is the stereotypical friend, but doesn't really do much and is so irrelevant, I forgot her name. The boys range from emotionless to the too-friendly to the playa boy archetypes. The only guy really worth mentioning is the one with glasses for reasons that would go into spoiler territory. The characters get a 7 because they played their stereotypes well and felt like they had a connection. They also sang good together. And were pretty bang-able. Moving on!
The music isn't really anything special, except the end song, which I found myself singing along to so loud that my mom had to come into my room and tell me to shut up. I can't help it, I really like cliche'd pop music, especially j-pop with engrish mixed in. It's a weakness, I know. The opening was skip-worthy and nothing else really popped. So, 7 again.
The art (6) was alright. The character designs were great for the guys (they were hot, what can I say). The main character, who really should invest in regular colored contacts, or take out the ones she currently wearing, looked average aside from those eyes.
Call this a guilty pleasure, if you will, because my overall enjoyment was a 9. However, looking at it from a reviewers perspective, like I am, the characters and story were unoriginal, the sound wasn't anything amazing and the art was average. It was good for what it was, and exceeded my exceptions (because they were unbelievable low). It is an anime worth watching if you're bored one day and don't have anything else to watch. Or, sexy boys could be your thing, in which case watch this, and watch it now.
Final Verdict: satanic eyes + sexy guys = hot sex (see what I did there?)
