Early episodes (1-11/12 sort of) are not easy to digest, for a more mature audience, in the sense of the writing and directing. Drawings are nice, animation as well, art style is a bit 'everywhere' but becomes more clear as the show progresses.
A lot of unique and interesting, alluring and mesmerizing music tracks. Audio design is decent.
Dialogues consist too many explanations about characters' drives and ambitions.
Timeline of events, even within a single episode, can cause some discomfort as you try to make sense as to why a specific scene is placed where it is on the timeline.

Directing is poor - There's no consistency and nothing new is brought to the table.
Characters motivations are fragile and childish-like (especially the main female protagonist (Miyo). Animation is very good, drawings are good enough. Conflicts (mainly between characters) are more irritating than intersting. Audio design and music are OK (music is felt to be more of a 'place holder' artifact, rather than an important tool to support the whole work of art). ... Jul 10, 2024
Writing is mediocre at best, aggressively attempting to display the writer's (Hideyuki Kurata) ideas and depiction of the show's main conflicts (a good example would be in episode 14, "Yahiko's Battle", in which there's a scene where a grown-up man talks to a little girl and spouts about the changes of eras, classes and history, all in the midst of scuffle).
Action sequences are not very thrilling and prolonged with explanations and realizations by the characters about what goes on around them. The sound design and choices of sound effects are not up to par with modern animes. No depiction of moral conflicts (of characters) in an anime ... Jul 2, 2024

The way the writing handles the anime's chosen themes is so convoluted that it hurts.
The writing is bad and never successfully conveys any of the 'messages' this anime might have. The directing is a mess, without any regards to what is being said or the moment in which the story is. Directed in a way that seems experimental at best, and unprofessional at worst. The music is out-of-touch for the genre, the scenes and the 'action'. Audio design is 'just there', nothing interesting for the ears throughout the entirety of the show. Example for how bad the directing and writing are: in episode, when the female police ... With a very somber backstory for the MC, the show never really picks up - it lacks the courage to investigate its own MC's 'complex' profile (the MC, in view is too shallow even though he should have been 'deep and complex').
The anime offers an interesting story telling technique of retelling the same instance of the story once from each side of the human-cat relationship, thus showing the human's perspective as well as the cat's perspective. The writer's choice to spoon-feed the MCs' (both the human's and the cat's) conclusions and explanations regarding the show's events of both past and present, is disappointing. Over-the-top ... This arc is good, nothing more: action sequences are entertaining enough, although nothing too unique or worth remembering.
The episodes of this arc, as with the other arcs of this fine anime, are heavily padded out with either long pauses that lack interest in them, or with repetitive actions of characters (best example is chapter 8). Sound and Audio are pleasant and do a lot of heavy lifting. This arc, in comparison to the anime's other arcs, is mediocre at best. Although it's worth watching, expectations should be adjusted to mid-mid (NOT 'mid-low', but rather as I wrote: mid-mid) outcomes. Have fun watching. |
