LN reader here. I'd say that the Anime was just a mess. Its one of the cases where the source is decent yet the anime just does a bad job at adapting the source material.
I'm one of the few who enjoyed the ride, but was majorly disappointed at how much they cut content and world building (which the anime desperately needed).
For a rookie director, I'd say he did a bad job at his first try. The anime is too rushed, cut out the lore, the worldbuilding, especially the much needed characterization for each of the characters.
