This is the first review I've ever written so I apologise if it isn't an amazing, detailed review. The reason I decided to choose Elfen Lied for my first ever review is simply because it was so dreadful and overrated I just needed to express how angered I am to have been deceived into wasting over 5 hours of my life. The issues were tackled so poorly and I found myself cringing every five minutes because of the awful harem element they failed to produce to good standards and instead left it as a deformed compilation of unfunny, awkward scenes.
Story 5/10

the issue of discrimination between the humans and the Diclonious, however, both Lucy and Nana obviously showed signs of ambition to wipe out the human race so therefore the moral of the show doesn't even work. The humans were simply locking the Diclonious as a self-defence mechanism to avoid extinction, so it was pretty difficult to feel any pity for the Diclonious when they didn't exactly give a valid reason for wanting the humans extinct. The reason Nana gave was "if there isn't any room for me in this world, I'll make room" which I assume means she wanted to wipe out the human race so they wouldn't try to capture or kill her. However, this doesn't make much sense because surely she could just dispose of anyone who wanted the Diclonious dead and spare anyone who had no knowledge of the race's existence. Furthermore, the ending of the show didn't even conclude any of the issues risen. To be honest, they didn't conclude anything, the show was completely and utterly pointless. I highly doubt there will be a season 2 but if there is I would like to see if they bring all these loose ends together. To add salt to the wound, all the sub-stories went nowhere and were, like the "main story", pointless. Also, especially towards the end, most the episodes consisted of flashbacks of footage we had already watched so I surmise this was because the writers were too lazy to write an actual plot towards the end. I gave it a 5 because I found the concept of the 'vectors' and the disease quite interesting even though they didn't expand on it enough for me to be satisfied.
Art 5/10
Not much to say on this; it was normal. Personally, I disliked the 'cutsie', 'kawaii' style of the art and how the characters looked really similar. I would've liked it if they had at least changed the style of eye but the only time they did was for Lucy (which is why she was my favourite character). The backgrounds were detailed like most anime backgrounds so I can't exactly add or subtract any points on that part. 5/10 best describes how 'average' the art style was so therefore that is what I will award.
Sound 4/10
The opening had quite good music that fitted with the atmosphere they were trying to attempt. They also fitted it into the story a little bit which I was moderately impressed with until it started to become repetitive with the constant flashbacks. The background music didn't exactly stick out so I guess it blended in well enough. Unfortunately, they chose the ending music poorly, in my opinion, because it completely contradicted the atmosphere they were originally creating. I gave it a 4/10 because most of the music was fairly decent but was let down by the horribly out of place ending music.
Character 2/10
Personally, my main focus is the characters in anime so I was severely let down on this. I like the characters to feel almost like real people but this was a show full of harem stereotypes who had cliché reactions. There was Kouta, one of my least favourite characters, as he was just so idiotic and bland; the typical harem protagonist who's ignorant to the girls' feelings. Then there was Yuka who just irritated me. She was just that girl who is too clingy and, of course, she was also his cousin because this anime went for the incest route which is popular in Japan. Nyu was just annoying since I prefer intelligent characters. I could go on about all the characters but they would all be stereotypes. I quite liked Lucy until her backstory when I saw that she was just another lovesick girl. Most of the other characters were just there to spew out meaningless, pointless dialogue which led to nowhere and would be better left unsaid to save everyone the time. I gave this a 2/10 since I focus alot on character and I was very disappointed.
Enjoyment 2/10
To me, this anime was simply bland. There was nothing intriguing; nothing that made me want to watch the next episode desperately other than to get the series over with. Honestly, I simply watched it because it was so unspeakable terrible it almost made me curious about whether it could get any worse. So it's a 2/10 because if I could go back in time, I certainly wouldn't watch it and would just save myself the time and effort.
Overall 3/10
Anything good was simply mediocre and anything bad was dreadful. If you are yet to watch Elfen Lied, I don't recommend it at all unless you enjoy awkward harems and lazily written plots. I apologise if you loved this show but it just wasn't my sort of thing and I could find so many things wrong with it.
Thank you for reading my review and I hope you respect my opinion, have a nice day!
