There's something about this anime that just keeps luring me back in. I have been in the fandom for from 2017 to 2021 and have not gotten out of it not even once, I have never gotten rid of my huge obsession with Hetalia. Even have defended it on several occasions and feel like its one of the best animes in the entire world....and heres why
The story is not linear, its all over the place, and my brain is all over the place so I quite enjoyed it. The story's main focus is on WWII however, but it also goes to any bit of history
...
at any random point and Its just so fun to learn about history at random in such a funny way too. Yes, the story focuses on WWII and everyone claims that the show makes the axis look good, but this is far from the case, its canon that countries in this anime do not represent their government, but their people and culture instead, therefore Germany, Japan and Italy themselves are not horrible people, there bosses are. The show also keeps things light hearted, as well as making fun of country stereotypes and also has made fun of h*tler yet people still say its n*zi propaganda. It also looks like it makes the allies out to be bad guys, but this is not the case, the allied characters literally say that they are heros and want to save the world, especially America, and it is framed in a way that makes the allies look like bad guys scaring the axis characters but this is played off in a funny humorous way and also is sort of from Italys perspective.
Now that I got the story outta the way and the controversy, I can move on to more.
Hetalia, sorta reminds me of southpark, its both offensive and has wack characters. The characters remind me the most of southpark, the way they interact, the humour, it just gives me those kinda vibes. Which I love. The characters are just amazing, all of them are so unique and they are simply just stereotypes, but they actually do have deep backstories and are very complex, I can't find anyone in Hetalia that I truly dislike, all of them are amazing and even though they can come off as really annoying and stereotypical to a country, it starts becoming clear that they have deeper issues and eventually become loveable.
This show literally doesn't make sense sometimes, but it encouraged me to enjoy history more, and the whole them of it is "Draw a circle thats the earth" Basically bring every country together. No one really talks about this, but often in hetalia, there are themes of peace, hope, connection with others, these themes are overshadowed often by the immaturity and craziness the series has.
Another thing amazing about the show is the comedy, the dialogue is hillarious. So many things, especially in the english dub are just so funny, the script is hillarious, its so random and weird and it gets me laughing a lot. The way the characters interact with each other, the relationships the characters have with other characters, and the dialogue. Its all just funny to me.
And I mean since I still love this series after 3 years, I might as well give it a 9 or a 10.
Story - Doesn't have a story really, but has taught me a lot of history or at least encouraged me to learn more history. Seriously, before Hetalia, I thought England was a state in europe so it helped with geography too, something I never was taught in school .-. 8/10
Art - Eh not really that good but they do make fun of the art style in the english dub. (Makes me feel like its like an abridged anime series) 3/10
Sound - The music is great 7/10
Character - All the characters are interesting and awesome, I love them all, and I like Italy a lot too. From a surface level, it looks like the characters are just a mockery of the countries they represent, but it goes deeper then that. 10/10
Enjoyment - I love it, I can't stop loving it. 10/10
Overall - 9/10
Oh but, it is so much more well thought out in the world stars manga. That is where characters get even better. Still, the first season, honestly just the entire anime series was an absolute blast and I think the thing it had going for it most was the comedy and characters.
