Gakkougurashi!

This seems to be an obvious choice: both titles try their best to mislead their audience with cute themes and feel-good openings, only to create 'plot-twists' later on, deceiving the viewer. These plot-twists are both very dark in tone which naturally conflict with the original tone of the show.

Aria the Natural
add

These titles both contain similar attributes to the supernatural genre; although Mushishi is more supernatural-heavy. There are beings which are in a different dimension from what the human 'universe' is in, and only specific beings can interract with and enter these fields. They are both the same length (26 episodes), and the animation/art for both entries are spectacular for their given time of production. Finally, both protagonists are calm and collected whilst interracting in abnormal circumstances, even though Akari (Aria Franchise) is more playful.

Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki

They are both about the idea of growing up; being raised by a parent until they are capable of being independent. The animation style for both titles are very simple but bright, and their ost, in my opinion, sound very similar at times. Although Ookami Kodomo no Ame To Yuki is about raising wolf-children, rather than human-children, both anime have the same feeling to them while watching; the viewer could even feel accustomed to the idea that raising animals as their own children is perfectly normal, making both titles, naturally, a relaxing watch.

Log Horizon
add

Log Horizon is infamous for 'ripping off' from SAO's storyline, although they are very different in essence. Thus, the main similarity between both series, is that they share the idea that people are trapped in a video game. Although Sword Art Online focuses more on the act of playing in an MMORPG, Log Horizon focuses more on the politics in this games' world.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.

Same feels and void to both anime. Impeccable character development to a very 'human' cast. In both series the protagonist is a generally unhappy person, whether its because he has lost someone, or he is generally unhappy with his life. Finally, they both have supernatural elements, which influences the story.

Durarara!!
add

Baccano! and Durarara!! are increadibly similar titles, as they are primarily produced by the same studio- Brains Base. They are both in the same universe, as there are various hints that prove this. The action sequences are very similar as well, as the camera angles are typically shot from below, rather than more on-surface. They are humorous characters in both series, who act as comic relief from the more darkly-thematic state of the anime. Their respective openings are as well in similar style and fashion, and finally they both have exclamation marks in their titles!!! ( pun intended)

Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu
add

Tokyo Ghoul and Kiseijuu both involve a fictional universe where there are supernatural beings, which are natural predators to humans. These 'aliens' both take human form, although parasites are naturally not very human-like at the get-go. The male protagonist in a huge dilemma in both titles, as he is transitioning from one species to the other, while still trying to maintain his humanity in the process. Both anime have as well dark colour palettes, and great , catchy ost's.

Steins;Gate
add

These anime tackle themes of Time-Travel, and they both seem to hit this very-difficult-to-achieve theme, right on point. They both act on this recent ability to travel through time, in order to save someone who they love; albeit in Toke wo Kakeru Shoujo, its initially used to screw around, while in Steins;Gate its originally used for experimental reasons.. but I digress.

Toradora!

Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo
add

I believe both anime have almost identical vibes to them. These two titles are high-school romantic comedies, and their casts are very similar at times. Both anime end on an open note (more emphasis on this point to Sakurasou rather than Toradora!) which leaves room for a second season. They are both done by J.C staff, and finally, the male protagonist has to choose between two (or perhaps more, depending how you look at it) very different girls; and eventually has to decide who he truly loves.

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
add

This seems to be a very common recommendation; and with good reason. Both main characters ( Light + Lelouch) are unusually intelligent people, and are both in high school. They both want to change the world for 'the better' although for two very different reasons. In both anime there are many deaths involved as well, as in both anime -SPOILERS- there are main characters who kick the bucket. Also, both anime are very well known are respected in the MAL community. Finally, they are great starter anime for those who aren't so knowledgeable with anime in general.

Both movies have exceedingly dark tones, and contain 'Mind-fuckery' moments in them, with controversial endings to both titles. Both are direct sequels to the series they are based upon.

Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Both anime tackle similar themes- typically intelligent and dark ones. Both anime as well focus more on battle tactics, rather than just full-out attacking. Both main characters have lost something they want to get back: Edward Elric wants to get his and his brother's bodies back, while Gon wants to find his father, and this makes both protagonists to carry on trying to find what they wish to find. Both anime are remakes, and many characters actually die.
