mai-otome shares many similarities with Simoun, having a nearly all girl cast that hold some sort of power, In the case of Mai-otome they have their meister otome powers and in simoun the girls are the only ones able to pilot special airships. The settings take place in the future but where the habits and aesthetics of the worlds look more medieval The drama between the girls is nearly as important as the over arching plot but with simoun being a little more angst oriented. They share Important themes like maturing/becoming an adult and forbidden relationships . The plots also deal with the fight for a certain technology. The two (most important) main characters in both spend most of the show at odds with each other and one of the main conflicts is their struggle to understand each other. Mai-otome is not listed as shoujo ai, the relationships between the girls focusing more on friendship, however even though Simoun is shoujo ai the relationships showcased really don't differ. One main character is ditsy with a happy go lucky attitude while her partner/foil is more serious with more baggage that they have to work through. Eventually the attitude of the exuberant main character wins the other over. However, Simoun definitely starts off on a more serious note while mai-otome builds up to one. There is definitely more humor in mai-otome.
