Rise of the Shield Hero: Walmart Edition.
That's all this anime is. It's a rip-off of Shield Hero. (SPOILERS AHEAD) You have a guy who dies getting reincarnated into another world, where he is maligned by the world's nobles and mistreated, even though he's secretly the most powerful guy on the planet. They lobby false accusations until he leaves the country where he meets a beast girl named Raphtalia...excuse me, I mean Latifa..who was initially a slave until he frees her. The two then go on adventures, until circumstances bring him back to face off with the very nobles who mistreated him.
It's
...
straight up Rise of the Shield Hero with some slight tweaks.
But, unlike Rise of the Shield Hero, this anime does not have a cool MC. This one has Rio. A sickeningly sweet boy who is always polite, courteous and "gallant". He's about as exciting to watch as public access television. Surrounding Rio is a harem of completely interchangeable names and faces of high-pitched girls all fawning over Rio no matter where he goes. Nothing stands out about any of them other than being "cute", which is the only thing Rio can basically say to them throughout the anime. How womanly they become over time. Because there's literally nothing else of note about them. I think the only thing interesting at all about the harem dynamic here is that Rio takes off on the women for years at a time. That's at least a little different from other run of the mill harems like this.
The story seemed promising in the first few episodes, with Rio trying to find his bearings and deal with the harassment of the nobles. But, it quickly tapered off into a run-of-the-mill Isekai adventure, before crashing and burning in a dumpster fire of a cliffhanger ending that explains nothing about why he's there, what is going on with his spirit girl, what he returned to the kingdom for before he dealt with Celia's situation, just all sorts of loose ends in what is obviously a set up for the sequel. I understand leaving something on the table for a second season, but you can't just end a season like you're ending episode 4. You have to explain some things, wrap up some kind of loose ends. Meh, not that it matters anyway. It's unlikely I'll watch the second season of this, anyway.
The anime was mediocre through most of the run, and became subpar in its final episodes that foisted a marriage drama on you out of nowhere, instead of having Rio either find Lucius or deal with the lies the nobles told about him. I wouldn't waste too much time watching this. If you haven't seen it, I would go watch Shield Hero instead. It's a much better version of this.

To be honest, I expected more out of this anime for how hyped it was. I've seen this everywhere, so I figured it had to be at the level of a FMA: Brotherhood or Code Geass in terms of quality. While I truly did enjoy it, it's not anywhere near as good as the hype makes it out to be. I think the reason for that is that it has two vibes that its trying to pull off: A sweet, slice-of-life world that follows the protagonist Anya as she tries to succeed in school, and a gritty spy world with death around every
...
corner, as it follows (mostly) Loid and to a lesser extent Yor, as they navigate the underbelly of Berlint. One trying to prevent a war, the other taking out assassination targets. (Which, they really, REALLY could've have used more of. Yor was awesome at hand to hand combat, and after that fight at the castle, I would have loved to see more of her fighting for real.). While the combination did work, it wasn't seamless and the end result was an anime that at times felt a little too childish to take seriously. There were times I really wanted to feel the suspense, such as when Yuri met Loid, but its hard to really be on the edge of your seat with suspense, while Siscon gags are flying. It brought the anime down just a few pegs.
Nevertheless, I was not only entertained, I ended up binging the whole thing in one sitting, because while it has flaws here and there and is overhyped for what it is, it's still funny as hell, has a great leading trio of characters, high production values, and a stellar soundtrack. The ED was one of the best I've heard in years. Without a doubt, the strongest aspect this anime brings to the table is the characters. They are enjoyable and fun to watch. Especially Anya, who might be my favorite chibi character ever. She's smart, funny and adorable. Some of the best moments of the anime center around her. I'm also a big fan of Yor. She's sweet and airheaded, but a total beast in battle. The second best aspect of the anime is the comedy. While the blend of styles took it down a notch, the unique blend of spy thriller with family show allowed for some fresh new jokes and gags. I would venture to say that Spy X Family is going to spawn a whole bunch of rip-offs trying to capitalize on this new terrain, just like K-On and SAO's premises spawned tons of copycat anime.
Overall, this was a very good anime, but don't expect it to live up the hype.

If you're wondering whether or not you can enjoy this anime without having seen any of the shows within it, the answer is simple: "No.". It was hard for me to follow and I've seen Angel Beats (One of the best anime ever made), Clannad and a couple of episodes of Little Busters. This thing is absolutely loaded with inside jokes that only those familiar with all of the series will get. The ones that I understood were funny, and there were a few universally funny gags like slapstick humor. But, overall, it is very inside. You will not enjoy this or get it at
...
all if you aren't familiar with Clannad, Angel Beats, Kanon, Air, Little Busters, Planetarian and Rewrite. I powered through it because I started it while doing my cardio so I was kind of stuck watching it. It was funny at times, but it really made me wish I had spent the time to watch all of those anime, so I could enjoy it more.
The anime itself is nothing more than a slice-of-life school anime, going from gag to gag in 4 minute shorts. It really is just the production company mocking all of their own tropes. Most of the episodes were about taking characters that were similar from each anime and putting them in the same room to make fun of each other. Such as all the male protagonists would have meetings about being in a harem, all the calm characters will have a moment where they drink coffee together and shoot the breeze, there's a baseball game between the characters who have little sisters, etc... That kind of humor. It wasn't a bad anime, even though I missed like 60 percent of the references. I feel like I would've loved it more if I knew everything. And I think that's the point of why Kagi-Nado was really made. It's an attempt to get people to go back and look at the series involved. Because most of these shows were released nearly 15-20 years ago. Around 2004-2008 for most of them. I think its an attempt to get people to go back and get interested in these franchises, or re-watch them out of nostalgia.
Still, I was relatively entertained. If you know these series you should love it. But, don't watch this if you haven't seen (or don't remember) the above mentioned series.

You know that a song is not your cup of tea when you're listening to it and trying to think of another song that could possibly be worse, and you come up empty. I thought of some of Kim Kardashian's music, I thought of Rebecca Black "It's Friday", I really thought of the bottom of the barrel that I've heard. Even Mumble rap. I could think of nothing. I'm sure this is not the worst song I've ever heard, but I just can't think of it right now. Which makes this, at least temporarily, the actual worst song I've ever heard. It's confusing, the
...
instrumentation in it is irritating and bizarre. I've never heard any kind of musical arrangement like I've heard here today. And that's probably for a reason. I can only describe the sound as some kind of "Jungle Electronica" mixed with K-Pop. The lyrics don't make much sense, either. I think she's singing about being chosen by a lover? But, it also seems like it's about sailing the seas as a pirate crew? I have no idea. The video itself is just a bunch of average animation and photo cut outs. It's comes off as a tribute anime done by a fan group. Which...is it? Is that what this is?
Music is very subjective, so I may have hated this, but you might love it. It's only 4 minutes long, so it's not like it's a huge investment of time to check it out. It's just for me, when someone asks me what I think the worst song I've ever heard was, this is going to probably come up. But, on Youtube where I saw it, it has millions of views and hundreds of thousands of likes. So, people dig it. I just don't.

Mid.
I try not to use that word, but there's really no other word to describe this anime but "mid". It's not bad, it's not good, it's just totally average in every respect. The story is your average Isekai adventure that sees the heroes going up against the corrupt establishment of the world. It's always either the nobles or the church and this time it's the church. The characters are totally average. Diablo is your average nose-bleed MC in the midst of a harem anime. Nosebleeding is so played out, I don't even really get irritated by it, anymore. It certainly hasn't been
...
amusing for many years, but they keep going back to the well more times than a crackhead goes back to the pipe. Like a 30 year old who gets zero kitty, finding himself in a muscular body with big titty thots trying to get that meat would be nosebleeding and running away still after two seasons worth of adventures? Stop it, already. I get that if he actually smashed it would go from Ecchi to Hentai, but you don't have to animate the sex. The realistic outcome would be exactly what was going on with that other demon lord with the three wives. (It was hilarious how angry that made Diablo, though.). Beyond that, the supporting harem is mid. I like them, but there's nothing special about any of them other than titty meat, except in Rem's case. That's booty meat, I guess. They're all just your typical harem girls needing to be saved by the MC and adding hardly nothing to the battles outside of taking down a low-level enemy here or there. The animation was mid. In fact, I would say the animation itself was dated. Like this was animated in 2015 or something. It didn't look terrible, but wasn't great either. Everything, literally everything was completely average. The jokes, the attempts at suspense, the new girls introduced, literally nothing was memorable, but nothing was bad enough to make me drop it, either. It was just something to watch.
This is the problem with Ecchi harem anime. They are strictly for showing boobs and don't provide much in the way of depth, character development, drama, or memorable moments. This is why the characters are exactly the same as they were a couple of years ago when I watched the (superior) first season. This is why there is never any loss, never any real stakes. Because it's just about making cute, big-titty elves who move merch and inspire R34 memes. And yet, when I'm blunted, I'll probably do this again. I'll probably smoke something, watch season three, and call it mid again. Because that's how you binge something like this. With a blunt and a mind that completely forgot the first season.
You can watch this anime if you want. Is it time wasted? That's up to you. It's so average, I really couldn't tell you if you'd like it or not. I can say that if you've seen a lot of Isekai, it's much more likely that you'll be bored with it, over someone new to the genre. This Isekai story is like every other average Isekai story you have ever seen in your life. So, your time would probably be better spent googling "Top 20 Isekai of all time" and watching whatever you haven't seen yet. Because watching Konosuba, Overlord, Tanya The Evil or No Game, No Life is a VASTLY better use of your time if you want to see Isekai done well.

This film hangs its hat on only three things:
1. Beautiful 3D animation.
2. A pretty explosive, if overall, unimportant final battle.
3. Giving Gohan fans what they have wanted for years. Gohan's return to relevance on the battlefield.
Outside of that? There's nothing here but a really, really low-quality story leading to a big 30 minute brawl, that purposely keeps out Goku and Vegeta, to put emphasis on Gohan and Piccolo. Which is fine, because the lesser guys should be able to shine once and a while, too. But, if you really wanted them to shine, more thought definitely could have gone into the
...
story of this film. (SPOILERS AHEAD)
The story is really bad. It's basically just the new Red Ribbon Army tricking the new Dr. Gero (But, it's a portly guy in love with superheroes named Dr. Hedo, instead) into making some powerful new androids by telling him the Capsule Corporation are filled with evil aliens who want to enslave and then destroy mankind. He chooses to believe it, so he can have access to their money and build new androids. After he does, then the army goes and kidnaps Pan so that Gohan can come and fight and they can kill him. It's an amazingly stupid premise.
But, however dumb the story is, it does lead to a good fight when Piccolo and Gohan confront the androids. And both of them achieve new (pretty sick) forms. The final fight almost takes your mind off of how dumb the story is. But, you can't fully forget, because when Cell returns, instead of the clever character you remember, this new Cell Max is just a mindless screaming giant based off of Hedo altering some of Gero's original work. Extremely disappointing, since the OG Cell is one of the most iconic villains in anime history. I expected to see him back and more powerful. But, it is what it is. It was still a hell of a fight, and it was nice to see all the gang (sans the big two) fighting again.
But, my suggestion to you is to not spend your money to go see this in theaters. Wait until it hits streaming services, if you haven't already watched the Cam version going around. It's really not worth it. You could just watch some fan-made DBZ stuff on YT if you're really just jonesing for it. I would recommend Legend: A Dragonball Tale and Goku vs. Saitama by Etol1c Animations on YT. Hell, even deathbattle has some good DBZ action if you haven't seen Vegeta vs. Thor, yet. Really, do that before you break into your pockets for this.

Reading these reviews sure makes me sad about the state of our world. So much bitterness and anger, so much jaded cynicism and looking to attack others, that we can't even enjoy an anime such as this one without throwing around terms like Misogynistic, Predator, Lolicon, Female Fantasy, Male Fantasy, Feminazi, etc... It's ridiculous, man. Have we gotten to a point where we can't even watch what is basically a modern day studio Ghibli film without pulling the proverbial knives out?
This anime was a lovely anime about a teenager who was viciously abused emotionally by his family and outcasted for being soft, long before
...
he was hurt in a car crash. It's about this boy finding hope in a girl (who is only 2-3 years his junior) who his father bought him to take care of him because he only has one working arm. That turned out to be the only good thing he did for him, for the most part, because the girl he sent was strong underneath such adversity as literal debt slavery in the mountains, that she passed on that love and strength to a mentally shattered boy. They overcome being sold off and abandoned by their parents in the mountains, and grow to have a full life of friends and love in spite of their circumstances.
How in the hell does this kind of story become such a lightning rod for criticism? It's not like it was endorsing the girl being sold. The most villainous dude in the anime did it, the MC tried to get her to leave almost immediately and she refused, and people still criticized him in the village for it. It clearly isn't endorsing buying child slaves for other children. It's just how the time was back then. Is Yuzu over-the-top sweet? Yes. But, these are anime characters. Not human beings. They aren't meant to behave like human beings. They are meant to be caricatures that amplify human traits in order to connect us emotionally to a story. Seriously, if Yuzu acted like a regular human, then where is the story? Because she immediately thinks the MC is a weirdo shut-in and then takes off episode one if she's a regular human girl. The second he offers her freedom from the arrangement, she's gone. And the anime ends in 10 minutes.
Hell, maybe it's because I'm older, but pedophilia never even crossed my mind. I just saw a 17 and 15 year old going through a puppy love stage that reminded me of young love I had when I was that age. It was sweet. And even managed to throw in some decent suspense at the end. How does liking an anime with zero sex or nudity and 2-3 kisses between two animated teenagers make me a pedophile of some kind? I don't get this world anymore and I'm not even a boomer. This was a great anime. It had character depth and development in its main character, it had a nice pacing to it, the music was lovely and story had the right blend of comedy, romance and drama. Animes like these are why I still give Slice of Life anime a chance.

1. I am an actual Shaman.
2. I have never seen the original Shaman king.
With that in mind, this review may be biased.
I loved this anime. Absolutely loved it. I've never even seen an anime about Shamans before. I've seen anime about Onmyoji, which are Japanese mystics, but I've never seen an anime that covered the entire global Shaman diaspora before. I loved how they really did a great job going all over the world and giving representation to everything from the Druids of Europe to the Shamans of North America. Granted, it's not like it's a compendium of knowledge for true
...
Shamanism, but it's nice to see that whoever made this film really has a knowledge of various Shamanic cultures, histories and ideologies. They also have an even greater depth of knowledge about New Thought. (The Afterlife concepts found in the Great Spirit portions of the anime.). I wouldn't be surprised if the creators of this anime were practitioners of New Thought.
I, personally, loved the characters as well. In seeing other reviews, it would appear that the character personalities are different from how they were in the original. Because I never saw it, I'm not jaded by the nostalgia of how they used to be. I only appreciated who they were. I loved Yoh's relaxed attitude mixed with a little cockiness, he might be a favorite MC for me. I also really loved Anna, who was my favorite character. Either her or Hao were my favorites. And yes, Hao, is the villain, but his completely untouchable attitude and demeanor, I really liked it. It was different. (MILD SPOILER): I've never seen an Antagonist so confident that he'll jump into the bath with his enemies buck naked, knowing no one is nuts enough to attack him. And then go to sleep in their home, while unwelcomed. That was a flex so strong it could pop a vein.
But, with all that being said, as much as I loved this anime for how its resonated with me, it has a LOT of flaws. If I was not biased as a practitioner of Shamanism myself, I would probably have scored this much lower because of the many, MANY mistakes they make in this anime. (SPOILERS AHEAD!)
The biggest mistake BY FAR is their penchant for spoiling their own show with the OP and mid-show credits. I know OPs can be spoilerish, but their openers were INSANELY filled with spoilers. They showed all of the first season's enemies hanging out with Yoh episode 1. Why would you do that? Showing Ryu, Ren, Faust and Lyserg standing shoulder to shoulder fighting Hao in episode 1 totally destroys any suspense when they show up as enemies in the anime. You automatically know that they're going to lose, and end up turning good, so nothing they do as a villain really matters. (Still, what Faust did to Manta when they met was pretty shocking. I didn't see that coming.) In addition to that, they would have the commercial break slides spoiling evolved forms before they actually ever used the forms in the show, thus spoiling the forms. But, as bad as that was, nothing was worse than the second opener. They literally showed Hao with the Great Spirit, and the Five Warriors with the Elemental Spirits. I mean...what the hell? You basically gave away that Hao becomes Shaman King 20 episodes before it happens. And then it sucks out the suspense at the end when Hao does the (admittedly awesome) awakening. As much as I liked that, do you know how much more I would've loved it, if I didn't see it coming? I would've really thought, especially being at the end of the anime, that it was one of those ultimate swerves where the heroes actually lose. Just horrible spoilage.
Beyond that, there were tons of mistakes in the story itself. Such as Yoh expressing zero knowledge of Furyoku to Silva when they meet, and then later providing the Matamune flashback showing that the Spirit taught him how to Spirit Integrate and attack to defeat an opponent in the exact same way he passed Silva's test. So, he should already know all about Furyoku. How could he even grow up as an Asakara and NOT know about Furyoku? He was trained by his grandad, and his wife was Anna the Itako, how would they not tell him once? How could he not even see Anna's Furyoku when everyone else was seeing it and freaked out about it? The show was filled with little holes like this.
Another critique of the show is the pacing. Man, the pacing was atrocious. It's like they spent so much time on fights that didn't even matter, that they ran out of time and had to rush through the ones that did. I was so disappointed when the final fight of the first round that pit Yoh, Ryu and Faust against Ren, Horohoro and Chocolove, was rushed and done in like 2 minutes without even a conclusion. And then it was just Ren vs. Yoh pt. 3, in those 2 minutes. But, the pacing issues became really bad when it was time to go through the 10 chambers to try and reach Hao before he awoke. His guardians were the strongest fighters in the anime. So strong they were dropping the heroes like flies through the first three chambers. But, then it was like: "Oh no, we've only got the budget for 4 more episodes, we better hurry up and finish." And so the later more important fights were done in a couple of moves. Silva vs. Yoh should've gone MUCH longer. And it would've been nice to see them fight Goldva.
My final critique is against the logic of the show at times. The characters just fail to use logic. A great example of this, is that they know that they only have 15 hours to reach Hao. And then they actually decide to go to stop at one of the levels to replenish their mana. I get it, you're low. But, you stop and eat, hang out and talk, go to sleep ALL NIGHT, get up and have breakfast, when you have 15 hours to save the world...What an absolute shocker that you ran out of time and Hao had to come find you. Which is fine, I guess, since Hao coming to them was one of my favorite parts.
But the logic was all over the place. You're fighting for the fate of every life on Earth. There's 9 of you, and you're entering rooms where only one guy is there to defend. So...let's hang back and let one or two guys fight, instead of jumping every single one of these dudes 9 on 1 from the start. They should've jumped Luchist and then did the same to the Patch.
Man, the more I write about this anime, the lower the score in my head is going... I'm going to stop, because I really, really enjoyed this anime a lot. It's just got a lot of holes that makes it clear why its score is a high 6 instead of an 8. I would definitely recommend this anime. But, not to people who have seen the original Shaman King. From what I can see, you're probably going to hate it a lot. Again, this review is biased, because this is more than likely an anime that deserves the score it has, but it resonated with me personally, so my score is reflecting that.

Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime is what happens if you took Beauty and the Beast and then blended it with Sword Art Online and K-On. It's basically that old fairy tale repurposed for the modern era with Isekai and Idols. And yes, it is as bad of a mixture as it sounds.
The key problem is if you're going to draw from such a well known story, and then blend it with futuristic elements, you have to make sure they come together in an innovative and seamless way. In this anime they do not. It's a mish-mash of ill fitting genres that creates
...
massive plot holes. In addition, I do not think the creators of this anime actually understand MMORPGs. Nothing made that clearer than the fact that the characters are not at all trapped in this digital world of "U", but when faced with situations where they should just unplug from the server, they run as if their lives depend on it. For example:
(SPOILERS AHEAD) For what reason did Belle need to go with the Justices when they apprehended her for Justin's interrogation? She could have just unplugged at any time. Why would she continue to fly away from the Beast's castle when she's trying to be incognito? Why would she not just unplug? It's senseless and because they didn't write into the story that the characters were stuck in the world and couldn't just leave at any time, it made all the suspenseful moments look ridiculous.
If they are failing at such an obvious story point, you can imagine all of the holes in the rest of the story. But, nothing is worse than the romance between Belle and the Dragon. I don't even know if you could call it a romance at all. But, they seemed to want to make it one, because that's what the original story was about. But, they made it convoluted and senseless by giving Belle a crush on her childhood friend, who I guess just wants to protect her as a friend. But, then they have her apparently falling for the dragon. And all this dragon has done is ruined her concert, yelled at her to go away the entire time, and threatened her. She already has someone she is crushing on, so why would she pay attention to this rude dragon guy other than the story calls for it? That moment where they fly in the sky and nearly kiss is so unearned and senseless.
They further convolute the tale as instead of going with the traditional cursed prince, they make the Dragon an abused boy, who is wrecking things in the game to be a hero to his little brother. Which is just...so stupid. I'm sorry, that's really dumb logic. "My little brother is mentally challenged and being abused by my dad, so let me troll people in an MMORPG because that'll help my little bro see me as a hero." The only thing more ridiculous than that, is that his little brother does see him as a hero for this. I mean...really...so he's getting beat down by his dad, but it's all okay, because an hour from now, he'll be able to watch a monitor as his big brother trolls people? Who thought of that as a character motivation? Somehow, it's supposed to be a believable "romance" that a girl with a crush on her childhood friend would fall for a violent monster who wants nothing to do with her, until she touches him on the chest once.
It just goes on and on. From a group of adults letting a 13 year old girl go by herself to confront a man who literally beats up his own kids her age, to there apparently only being two girls who sing music on a social media platform with 5 billion users, to the idea that the world's largest social platform wouldn't have official moderation or work with law enforcement, but leaves it to self-appointed users to basically dox each other with a lion cannon to keep the peace. (And only one guy has the cannon. Among a group of 5 billion people...and somehow, order is maintained. Only the Dragon is out of line.) The anime is just filled with ridiculously nonsensical ideas and poor execution.
I will however, give it its due on the beauty of it. It's a very beautifully animated film. It has that kind of Studio Ghibli animation style on the 2D and Land of the Lustrous level 3D quality. It's wonderful to look at. Also, the music is very beautiful. The woman voicing Suzu/Belle has a very beautiful voice. It does draw out some emotion out of you when she sings. At least it did for me. But, it's not enough to save this anime from a low score. The story is just too poorly executed. I think this probably would have been much better as a TV series than a film. They would've had more time to make things make more sense. Especially the love that blooms between Beauty and the Beast. That was just so fast it made zero sense and I was left feeling if they really even would stay connected. Afterall, she lives far away and he's surely about to end up in the foster care system. That's how bad the story is. They didn't even wrap up the happily ever after. The Dragon could be getting abused all over again within a month by a foster parent. I mean, hell, at least have an end credits scene where Belle's dad adopts them or something. With more time, they could've fleshed out a sensible rise to the top as a singer on social media. There would be millions of "Belles" backed by thousands of labels around the world. There's no way only Belle and Peggy Sue would be singers, so there should've been much more to her climb to the top. This film needed much more time to try and tell four stories at once. (A girl trying to recover herself after the death of her mother, boys going through abuse by their father, and becoming an idol online.) This is three different film plots that were shoved into the story of Beauty in the Beast. It can't be good with only 2 hours.
The beauty and music of this anime makes me want to like it. But, it's not much different from a blonde bimbo. Yes, when I look at you, I want to be with you. But...then you start saying things. And I quickly realize I need to move on to the smart looking brunette in the librarian glasses at the next table.

Fantasy BJO is a surprisingly entertaining anime. It's far from perfect, but it's very funny and approaches the Isekai genre from a unique angle. It's basically a rom-com that focuses on two men struggling to accept their feelings for one another. It becomes much more difficult when one of them is blessed by the goddess of love to turn into a beautiful woman in a fantasy world. Outside of this unique angle, it's completely low-stakes fluff and not at all different from any other generic isekai anime you've ever seen. The final boss is a giant robo bunny, so that should be all you need
...
to know about whether or not this anime should be taken seriously.
In spite of it's very middling world building, supporting characters, and animation, I still enjoyed it. Nothing was particularly terrible about the anime, but nothing was truly stellar, either. It just had some funny moments and an interesting MC duo. There's a lot wrong with the anime, of course. The story is completely generic. "Defeat the Demon Lord". The cast outside of the main two are completely forgettable. It will be a challenge to remember Schwartz or The Premier 3 months from now. There's nothing really memorable about the anime, no surprise swerves or amazing fights, or truly memorable jokes. The jokes were funny, but it wasn't a classic comedy or anything. It was just an entertaining, funny and unique take on a long over-mined genre.
