This'll be a short review, with it being 4am.
While I feel awkward even reading the premise of this manga (I find crossdressing rather strange) , I'm glad to say that I did. It was a fun, engaging read throughout, and I thoroughly enjoyed it (despite my sadness for one of the girls in the ending - no more spoilers than that! The story wasn't the best, but the characters were great and the art was good and that's what I came here for.
It's easy to get invested in the characters, and despite the strange plot (and awkward moment where the TL I read had two of the
...
MCs start swearing for a chapter) I thoroughly found myself awaiting more.
I'd highly recommend this for a quick read, being only ~30ch.

Kancolle is probably more a guilty pleasure of mine, to be honest. As a new fan of the game (and occasional Azur Lane player) I still find "War stuff, but moe" quite original (even if it's anything but). I'll make a quick summary of the anime, as I see it personally.
Story: 5
Not very good. Jumps around a lot, but kept me interested enough to hang around (though let's face it. The story isn't why we're here). The Abyssals are taking over the world (more specifically the oceans) and it's up to the shipgirls to stop them. There's a message about fighting fate in there,
...
but that's spoiler territory.
Art: 7
Very good blend of all the characters. They all have a cohesive style (unlike the game). CG is pretty jarring in combat, but not too bad (especially when you're used to it). Actual animation deserves an 8, really, but knocking off one for the mid-tier CG.
Sound: 8
Not a very memorable OST, but the OP and ED are some of my all-time favourites. The actual SFX are surprisingly good, and can keep you engaged in longer battles. The VAs did very good jobs - I was able to feel the emotion they tried to convey very well and apparently some of them voiced lots of characters. I never noticed, so kudos to those VAs especially!
Character: 6
Obviously not much time to make good on most of them, but the ones who do get development get enough to cause at least a bit of emotion (I found myself with a smile on my face for lots of the show, but that's more the SoL that does that). The cast is quite simple yet diverse, and I think it works well in this show. I'd give it a 7, personally. I just really don't like how much of a self-insert the Admiral is (he never talks, nor appears on screen). He knocks one off, because of how damn unnatural it is.
Enjoyment: 9
If there's one good thing about Kancolle, it's that Cute Girls Doing Cute Things is always something I can get behind. The curry episode (total filler, don't worry) was a bit much for me with how jarring it was from the story, and the *goddamn admiral* exists, but besides that I really enjoyed the antics of the diverse cast.
Overall: 8
It's a good show. Not a masterpiece, but I'd recommend it to someone fairly new to the medium (not so new as to find basic fanservice strange though. If I recall correctly this show has quite a bit, but not as much as other similar shows).
Lots of the reviews on this anime are very critical, and while criticism is a good thing, I wanted to throw my own thoughts out there (because really, I think this anime should be rated like, 7.5. Even accounting for my own bias). I hope you take the time to give it a shot - it's not great but it's good enough to waste some time (and maybe find a favourite shipgirl. Who knows?)

[Potential spoilers ahead]
This won't be an in-depth review, since you can find plenty of content on this series. It's one of those shows where nearly every long-time anime fan hates it, and nearly every new anime fan loves it.
Story: Poor story, plot holes, the ending of Arc 1, everything except the concept in Arc 2, I can go on. The revolutionary VR tech out there is confirmed to be potentially deadly by a ~14 y/o, and nobody thought to regulate the tech in any way. The game system of SAO literally bends over backwards to the MC, Kirito (as he has the fastest reaction
...
time of any players, he gets an OP skill that I believe is revealed about halfway through the first arc). I won't discuss the ending of either arc, but the first felt purely bad and the second was just a generic ending with the bad dude getting his ass kicked, if I recall correctly. The forced villain in Arc 2 is...bad. Just plain bad. He's a villain for the sake of a plot device really.
Art: I don't really remember anything about the art. The characters do suffer from Same Face Syndrome, but it's not too bad unless you're used to anime that really do a good job at avoiding that. The fight scenes look quite nice, but I haven't watched the show in a while and it didn't leave a very large impression.
Sound: Most people who see SAO can at least agree there's some damn good soundtracks in this series. The most popular is "Swordland", but there are other good tracks in my music playlist that come from this series. The opening song is good but a little forgettable (unless you leave it on loop or something), and the ending didn't leave much of an impression either.
Characters: Kirito, the MC, is a blank slate for the sake of the audience projecting themselves onto him. The female lead, Asuna, feels rather generic. The potentially interesting characters (IE, Klein) have been thrown under the metaphorical bus and get little screentime or chance to develop while the characters that should develop (Kirito) don't really do so. Kirito is basically superhuman. He's a kendo prodigy (whose fighting style would make kendo practitioners want to cry) who gave up and became a super hacker instead; he even hacked government records to see his own file (not a big spoiler, but it causes family issues). The characters with predefined roles and traits (Sachi, the shy one to get Kirito to open up a bit more) has a fear of dying in the game. Because nobody else shares that sentiment.
TL;DR: Go watch the abridged series of this show by Something Witty Entertainment. It's a lot less absurd, and comes with better character development than its source material (even though it takes a very long time to update)
