!!This review has all the story spoilers!!
Angel Beats! has earned its spot as one of my all-time favorite animes. After rewatching it recently—and with some extra free time on my hands—I had to write a review.
The show kicks off like a classic Isekai: our main character Otonashi drops into this world with no memories, trying to figure out what's going on. But where this anime really shines is the world-building.
The concept is super engaging. Characters who feel like they missed out on their youth get another shot in this limbo. At first, they think they need to fight to avoid 'obliteration.' But as the story
...
goes on, Otonashi figures out the true purpose of this world and helps others find peace.
And then there's the mystery. Throughout the series, there are hints that this place isn't just some magical realm—it's actually a sophisticated, programmed environment. The big reveal near the end—that this world was programmed and fine-tuned by a guy who lost his love when she found peace and got obliterated—is mind-blowing. It adds a lot of depth and makes the world seem more "permanent" like it has been there for a long time.
The character development in Angel Beats! is also really good. Otonashi's journey from confusion to understanding is both touching and intense. His growing bond with Kanade (a.k.a. Angel) adds a lot of emotional weight. As well as other character arcs who bear just as much weight. Kanade's tough exterior hides a super empathetic character who just wants peace for everyone. Yuri, the rebellious leader of the Afterlife Battlefront, brings a different vibe with her fight against the system. Her tragic backstory and fierce determination make her unforgettable.
Now, let’s talk about the ending. We see Kanade and Otonashi outside the school after the graduation. Otonashi confesses his love, and Kanade reciprocates. However, Otonashi wants to stay and help others, but Kanade wants to move on and find peace. Ultimately, after an emotional scene, we see her get obliterated, and Otonashi is heartbroken. It's an interesting parallel to what we saw in the penultimate episode. If you stop there, you get the 'bad ending' where Otonashi presumably becomes the master programmer and the cycle repeats. But stick around for the post-credit scene, and you get the 'good ending,' with two characters resembling Kanade and Otonashi, likely reborn, about to meet again in a new life.
Conclusion: Angel Beats! is a perfect example of an anime that can build meaningful characters and an interesting world in a short time. Its mix of humor, action, and touching moments is a testament to its creative storytelling. Even though some people feel it's rushed and not that well thought though, it hit just in the right spot for a viewer like me. With some honestly well-developed characters and a unique premise. It’s a must-watch in my opinion. Angel Beats! is one show that’ll stay with you long after it ends.
