Similarities: -Both main characters want revenge for their dead family -Both MC’s use a sword -Both MC’s are lonely at the beginning, but eventually make friends and are accepted into a new family -Both MC’s struggle to express their feelings, but can be surprisingly cute when they do open up -Both MC’s have similar hairstyles/ hair color -Super shounen themes about the value of friends and family -Human and sentient object fighting as partners -A super powerful family in charge -The idea of humans fighting their fate as the slaves to a stronger species -Lots of blood spilling in fights -Offering of blood to something that gives them power -One person who isn't as evil as she first appears -Cool weapons and flashy fight scenes These two shows have completely different atmospheres, but many of the plot points are eerily similar. Kill la Kill may be hard to get into if you like more of the serious, tragic stuff, but it definitely has its fair share of dark themes and seriousness and sadness. Give it a shot, and look past its image. Its true brilliance is in the bonds between the characters, and their story.

Both have flashy transformation sequences; crude language or innuendo-filled humor; deep themes about fighting against fate; themes of rape, sexual assault, and child abuse; plenty of fanservice (mostly in second half for Penguindrum); and strong bonds, loyalty, and devotion between characters. OST’s for both shows are catchy and memorable. Both have interesting and mysterious people whose roles gradually become clearer. Both have slow starts where nothing makes sense until halfway done. Both have a sentient piece of clothing that gives a human power. Both have a secret organization. Less fighting action in MP, but there is some. KLK took the anime industry by storm, often taking the trophy as the “savior of anime.” If you KLK fans have seen all the obvious recommendations (TTGL, FLCL, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt) then give Mawaru Penguindrum a try. You’re sure to enjoy it if you liked Kill la Kill.
