Before I started watching Frieren I thought to myself that this would be one of the most overrated animes of all time. Why ? Well naturally it's because it dethroned FMAB from the number 1 spot on MAL by an unbelieveable difference of .30 points. Don't get me wrong I do not think FMAB is the greatest anime of all time as well but I do understand why it was regarded as the number 1 anime of all time. FMAB was a perfectly welll balanced anime for the most part but, it wasn't perfect in any category whether that be the story, characters, animation etc.
...
It just had something for everyone to enjoy. I was 100% sure that Frieren immediately taking over the No. 1 spot was all due to recency bias, because since the beginning of the 2020s especially (i think) a lot of both mid and good shows have received outrageous scored on this site as opposed to the scores of older shows. This is of course all due to the extreme burst of popularity anime has received in the 2020s.
I however wouldn't say I went into Frieren with negative expectations. I knew it would be a great anime I just thought it wouldn't be the best anime of all time according to MAL. Boy, was I wrong.
To start off, what makes an anime great? When deciding this there are a lot of different aspects to rate. The story, characters, animation, voice acting, music and of course enjoyment are all deciding factors when it comes to rating anime. There are two ways we rate these aspects in our minds. Objectively and Subjectively. An anime might have incredible visuals, wonderful characters and a gripping plot but in the end if we do not feel a special conneciton to the characters, if we can't find parts to relate in the story and if that anime just didn't feel 'special' for us even if that anime is technically perfect we probably won't think it is the best or greatest anime of ever made. Just because it isn't our favorite. In my opinion when picking the "greatest anime of all time" on a site like MAL it is important to overlook some of the subjective opinions because this is not only the preferance of you or another person, it is the general consensus that choses it. Basically, I think our favorite and the greatest of all time are two very different things.
With all this in mind I do not understand why people do not think Frieren deserves the top spot of MAL. Frieren in my opinion is definitely the greatest anime ever made. It is the closest that any anime has ever come close to perfection. There is not a single aspect of Frieren that is lacking. I have enjoyed almost every second of Frieren. I loved the story and the characters, the animation and art style are mind blowing absolute perfection, everything that happened in the 28 episodes was very entertaining from the simple shopping to the beautifully animated action sequences. I would also like to say, how the hell was all of this only 28 episodes. The episodes were so packed with different events and plot lines that after I finished watching it felt as if I watched double the number of actual episodes.
So why isn't Frieren a 10 on my list. It all comes down to subjectivity. Yes I loved the characters and the story but it just wasn't special for me. Don't get me wrong this is not a bad thing at all. Just because an anime didn't earn a special place in my heart doesn't mean that I regret watching it or it was a bad watch. Frieren is the best anime I have seen in almost a year and I am grateful for that.
In conclusion. Frieren deserves that number 1 spot 100%. If you still haven't watched it go and watch it right now. Who knows maybe it will gain a special place in your heart. I sure wouldn't be surprised because it can easily gain that place with its wonderful story and characters. Even if it doesn't, you won't regret it and I believe you will agree with me in saying that Frieren is the closest anime to perfection.
Edit: I realized I mixed up subjective and objective while writing this review (english is not my first language) and that made some parts very confusing I fixed it now i think

READ MY REVIEW ABOUT THE MANGA BEFORE DECIDING IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO WATCH THIS SERIES
Nana the anime is absolutely wonderful. The characters are very unique and colorful and the plot is interesting. The anime covers all of the good parts of Nana. If you are the kind of person who has to see how the story progresses after the anime ends by reading the manga. DO NOT DO IT. Leave Nana completely after you finish the anime. Do not be fooled by the super high score it has and how much it has been praised over the years.
Since this is more of
...
a warning/suggestion then a review I will end it by saying that tine Nana anime is a brilliant show and definitely deserves a watch, but do not even approach the manga.

There is one very simple thing to ask when talking about Nana, where the hell did it all go wrong ?
Nana starts off wonderfully, a cast full of colorful and unique characters and intriguing plotlines and goals of those characters. The anime covers roughly half of the manga and up until the final few episodes of the anime Nana is a perfect series. However at one point everything just starts to go downhill. The downward shift is not much of a problem in the anime since it doesn't cover a lot of it and the events that occur are still acceptable. But when the anime
...
is over and you have to jump onto the manga to see how the story progresses, thats when Nana really becomes a pile of steaming hot garbage.
Before getting to the major problems lets start by addressing the smaller ones. The series completely drifts away from music especially after the anime ends. The biggest reason I was so interested in this show was because of the music and being a band trying to become famous and seeing what band members live through in their personal life. The story does a wonderful job in the beginning when it comes to this. The characters that are related to the band part of the series are very interesting for the first half of the series. I especially love that the story is not afraid of underage drinking, smoking and sex. The reason for this is because it is more realistic, these activities are very common in high school years especially so the story not being afraid to show them is a wonderful decision. Sadly however as I have said the story drifts away from music completely and just turns into a fuckfest where everyone stars to fall in love with everyone and a fuck ton of unnecessary drama and idiotic situations occur from this.
I am going to talk about the problems that come up with all the characters in a moment but firstly I must talk about Hachi. Hachi might be the single worst main character I have seen in any anime or manga. She starts off fine, being an airhead, energetic woman who has an unhealthy dependency on men and being romantically or sexually wanted by men. This is an interesting background in my opinion and the reader would expect Hachi to overcome this dependency and grow as a person but sadly this is not what happens. She becomes worse and worse when it comes to relationships with the opposite sex and hurts a lot of people some of which very close to her. I mean at leats thats what was supposed to happen but for some reason everything Hachi does in the story is forgiven or overlooked by everybody around her. She has zero character devolopment and turns into a horrible person but still everyone and I mean EVERYONE for some reason never get upset with her and treat her like she is the most precious most important person in the world. If we move on from this problem and return to Hachi's character she is basically a spoiled little child in a 20 year old's body. She is nowhere near likeable and becomes absolutely insufferable as the series progresses.
This might be an outrageous statement on my hand but through out the series I never once understood why anybody cared so much about Hachi. When you think about it this cast of characters who are supposed to know eachother since they were high school students for some reason all care more about Hachi then eachother for the most part. And Hachi isn't even with them for a long time, she is there for only a couple of months and after that she goes away due to the pregnancy situation.
The biggest problem with the series in general is how the characters change overtime. At some point everyone just loses all of their interesting characteristics and the only thing about them becomes the relationships with one another. And towards the final chapters the everyones characteristics start completely changing super suddenly and out of place that you don't even know what the hell is the reason for anything anymore. They become absolute polar opposites of themselves in an instant than turn back and change and change and change ALL THE FUCKING TIME. Everything turns into a shitshow drama festival.
Especially Nana (not Hachi) is effected the most from this problem. She becomes the single worst character in the story. She is always bouncing between dedicating her life to Hachi, dedicating her life to Ren and completely focusing on her career. And these bounces happen literrally chapters between eachother. But for the most part she is focused on Hachi and as I've said I never understood this. Why the hell is Hachi so important for everyone especially her. She is the worst of the bunch when it comes to the forgiving of Hachi about everything.
The series also introduces a bunch of side characters who do nothing but complicate things because a lot of characters look so damn similar due to the art style.
It is time to sum up this horribly written review where I basically emptied my pent up frustration to this series. Nana took up almost a whole week of my life with multiple nights of staying up until the morning to read of watch it and when it comes to the anime I cant say i regret it. The anime was very solid as I've said, one of my favorites, or to be honest was one of my favorites. The manga has completely outshined all the positive opinions I had had about the anime as well. I gave a score of 4 due to 40% of the series being a 9 and the other 60% being a 1 but trust me and do not read the manga at all. Just watch the anime and leave it at that. It is not worth the time and effort. And especially it is not worth learning the rest of the story since it is more of a fuckfest than a story in general.

Makeine was an anime that I had high expectations for. The ammount of hype and praise it got right after its release and the promise of showing us a realistic highschool romance experience was enough for me to pick it up. It should be obvious that it was a horrible decision on my end.
Makeine is the single worst "romance" anime I have ever seen in my life. I won't go into a lot of detail about it but the reasons are as the following.
Makeine was the first anime to make me suffer as much as I did. Not because I related to the painful reality
...
of rejection when it comes to highschool romance or anything. No, the reason behind me suffering is how boring this anime was. By the final episodes all I could do was to scream for it to end.
The decision of using the male MC as a tool for showing us what the female cast is experiencing is certainly a unique method of storytelling. I mean, I think it is what they aimed for because the male MC (whose name I sadly have forgotten during the time of this review) is the lamest and meaningless excuse for a main character I have seen in any romance anime. He shows no sign of character for the majority of the anime and when he does it is the most idiotic showing of character imaginable.
The female cast is insufferable. All of the main girl characters are incredibly annoying and far from being likeable. The show's main plot of being overlooked by your childhood friend when it comes to romance is also a huge part of the reason the main female cast suck. They all have the same problem so they all whine and cry about the same thing. What even was the reason to have multiple girls if they all go through the same things with no satisfying resolution in the end.
The only positive aspect of this anime is of course the art and animation. It is perfect. Nothing more to say about it.

Citrus was dissapointing to say the least.
I went into Citrus expecting it to be a cute simple love story between a gyaru who is laid back, full of energy and has no care for rules and the student council president of er school who is her complete opposite. I hadn't seen a girls-love anime before so I just assumed that this would be a cute, interesting and entertaining experience getting into a new-ish genre for me. But Citrus left me still hungry for that cute girls-love series I still am waiting for.
Citrus starts of horrbily and ends, well, wholesomely but not satisfying at all. The
...
first episode completely shattered my dreams with one of the most disgusting, disturbing scenes ever for me with the love interest in the series (being Mei) sharing a deep kiss with a teacher from her school. It is plain disturbing and nothing else can be said. I have no idea what the creator was thinking when adding the whole arranged marriage stuff between Mei and the teacher and also the whole other stuff about her family the school charboard thing the strictness of her grandparents basically that whole ordeal but it was completely useless and disgusting. None of the things from that arc comes up again and all of the problems regarding that arc are resolved within the blink of an eye.
That is the main problem with Citrus. Everything is rushed and incredibly poorly written. Instead of trying to divide a 12 episode show into different arcs. (the grandpa and Mei's family and school stuff, the pink haired girl, Mei's father returning, the white haired twins etc.) They could have just sticked with the initial one, the problems with Mei's family being the schools chairboard and how it affects Mei and the relationship between Mei and Yuzu. None of the arcs were enjoyable and the show has horrible pacing and writing issues when it comes to resolving them.
The show also have a lot of poorly made choices directly in the writing. The introduction of the whole teacher-student intimacy thing was horrible to begin with. The show later decided to turn into incest. And the ammount of kissing between different characters is really absurd and irritating.
The characters were also poorly written. Some of them were straight up horrible with no good qualities what so ever. None of the side characters really mattered that much so I am not going to go in depth with any of them and I will focus on the main girls. Yuzu is the better of the two, she is introduced as a gyaru looking to have a relationship in high-school and sees relationships and intimacy as something to be proud of and brag about but after developing feelings for Mei her main purpose becomes to be there for her and turn their sistership into a relationship. Her character development did not feel that unnatural so I have no problems with her plotline or character. Mei on the other hand is a different case. She has a lot of different issues and traumas to her character with the arranged marriage, prestigious family with high expectations and the abscence of a father figure however all of these are nothing but background information when it comes to execution. None of her issues are resolved properly and they don't even have any effect ob the character. Her personality itself also lacks any development and for some reason she has these sudden changes in personality that makes you think that she is changing or having any kind of character development but she immediately reverts back to her old self for some reason and this goes on and on for the whole show. I don't particularly dislike her character a lot but she is far from likeable to say the least.
Citrus is a clusterfuck of an anime with nothing really positive to say about it except that it does have some cute scenes between our main couple. It is a huge dissapointment for me and my search for a proper girls-love anime that just leaves things cute and simple continues.

To think that this was the worst anime I watched, well a rewatch sure does change a lot. A few years ago when I first watched this anime I thought that it was incredibly boring and poorly written I even gave it a score of 1 and it remained as the single 1 rated anime in my list for a long time. I decided to rewatch it these past couple of days and I am glad I did.
You can sum up this anime easily with a few words: Evangelion but sex
It is very easy to hate Darling in the Franxx. The concept is a complete
...
ripoff from multiple shows and the ammount of sex references are straight up disturbing at places. In the first few episodes I was really appalled from all the sexual referances and even thought this was a rushed hentai bait of an anime in the concept of Evangelion. But the anime managed to recover from its flaws in the long run and even though the final big reveal about APE and stuff does feel a little rushed and out of place I cannot call this series a bad series at all. The direction of the story is very flawed at places but when you look at the big picture I can say that Darling in the Franxx has a well written story. The characters did start of as very annoying and not all of them managed to develop throughout the story but the ones that did are enough to outweigh the ones that didn't so I cannot call the characters bad written in any means however that does not mean they are well written aswell they are likeable but they weren't able to make me care for them in any means. Our main character Hiro however is rather bland. He doesn't have much of a personality other than he is the "darling" of Zero Two. Zero Two in my opinion is also not a really well written character. I can understand the meaning and purpose behind the character but I was not able to care a lot for her aswell. Her changes in personality through out the series feels rushed and out of place at times.
I am not going to bother going in depth with the story but all I can say is it could have been much better but the show does suffer a lot from directional issues. It is the definition of that one football press conference thing (idk) "sometimes maybe good sometimes maybe shit".
I am writing this review fresh after my rewatch so my opinions might change in the following days but i doubt it will drift a lot from what I have written here.
I can easily recommend this show it is an entertaining series with an interesting universe but not the greatest of stories or main characters. That being said though this is still an incredibly obvious copy of Evangelion with a distubing ammount of sexual referances so the first few episodes especially might make you want to drop it and I can't tell you to not do that because the story may leave you dissatisfied in the end.

This was quite the surprise both good and bad
Before I watched this anime I'd seen a few clips from this show and thought that they were pretty cute and as someone whose favorite genre is romance I of course decided to watch it. The first episode however really killed my expectations after seeing our two main characters Akira and Jiro both have crushes on other people. I hate when a situation like this is a part of the plot in romance animes. However my prejudice would quickly turn out to be in vain because in the simplest terms this show was adorable.
In romance animes
...
characters get flustered over pretty much anything and that for me is very frustrating. This situation usually leads to characters keeping a physical social distance between as if it was the damn pandemic and it also affects the way they talk and their attempts to compliment eachother. Now the fluster situation is very much still a part of this anime but to be honest im used to that however even though our characters still get flustered at many things it doesn't affect them having any kind of physical contact and this is one of the reasons this anime shines for me. Finally we have some characters actually act like a real couple. (even though their not but i could care less) I do believe that the physical contact between our main couple gets a little too far that it feels kind of absurd I am not complaining at all in fact I am all for it because it is way better than having two characters not getting within 10 kilometers between eachother and only holding hands by the end or something.
I also love the chemistry between our main couple even though it is not really realistic (which is of course not something I am expecting from an anime that has a concept like this) it is all exaggerated for the purpose of being cute which I have no problem with and enjoyed a lot.
Next part is spoilers!
Now my main problem with this anime comes from the love dilemma our main male character is subjected to. Until now when I was saying "characters" or "main couple" I was referring to Akira and Jiro. Both Akira and Shiori are stereotypical characters but when comparing the two Akira is a lot more unique and entertaining compared to Shiori. The main reason this anime fell out with me is a specific creative decision by the writer. Why the hell did they think It was a good idea to make Akira move on from her crush but leave Jiro in the same dilemma he was subject to in the beginning. If both characters gradually moved on from their initial crushes it would have been so perfect and for a moment I thought that was the case. When Jiro left Shiori to look for Akira who was missing I thought he finally gave the signal to us viewers that he was going to choose Akira and move on from Shiori. (just like what Akira would do in a few scenes) But that was not the case not at all because while Akira was finally moving on from her crush (which was something that actually happened gradually through out the whole anime for Akira) Jiro went ahead and shared another god damn kiss with Shiori. Now the first kiss was already a stinker of a scene in my opinion but I was able to ignore it because it did not affect the relationship between Jiro and Akira a lot. But the second kiss made nothing but put me in a big pit of worry for the future of the series. And they had to put the damn race scene at the end of the anime aswell which probably means that it is going to turn into a race between the two love interests and that would turn the whole series into a sour taste in my mouth.
There are 3 ways this series can end when it comes to the romance part. The best case scenario is they drop this race or competition shit and Jiro also gradually moves on from Shiori and accept his feelings for Akira. The other scenarios (which would both be horrible in my opinion) are either Jiro chooses Shiori or he doesn't choose at all and the series ends without any decision and proper conclusion.
If it wasn't for this situation the series was easily a 9 for me because it easily achieves what it aims for. This show isn't some super serious romance with a lo of human drama or stuff like that and it doesn't want to a show like that. It aims to be a simple cute series and nothing deeper so I am only judging it on how close it gets to that.
Spoiler end
At the end however we cannot know how the series will advance (at least I can't because I don't plan on reading the manga) and I am only reviewing the first season here so apart from the whole "situation" I talked about in the spoiler part it was a really entertaining and pleasant watch (apart from the last episodes). It definitely has the potential to become one of the cutest romances I have ever seen in the long run but it needs to make some very crucial decisions about how it will advance in the future. Only speaking for the first season I can easily say like I've said in the beginning it was adorable so it deserves a watch for sure.
Im putting it in mixed feelings because even though I said it deserves a watch it is possible that people can easily dislike this show with the situation I mentioned in the spoiler part and the fanservice might also be too much for some viewers and can feel forced but I learned to ignore that on my part. And of course the concept might be too absurd for you.
Sorry for any grammer or vocabulary errors I am not a native English speaker and I tend to forget a lot of words I normally know when it comes to writing a review (the same happens when using my mother tounge).
