Working!! the anime and manga series isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but if you've made it this far then you should already know whether you like it or not. I'd never seriously recommend anyone who's watched the previous three seasons to skip this one since it resolves lingering plot threads from season three and puts a nice little cap on the series as a whole. This review is for people like me who see the stellar reviews for this special on this site and assume it has to be one of the greatest series finales of all time.
That's not to say that

Working!!! Lord of the Takanashi is necessarily bad. It's just okay. If I had to boil my feelings down to a single complaint, it's that this finale doesn't feel worthy of a hour long special. Some of that is from a pure storytelling perspective, since several of the longest ongoing story arcs have been resolved by this point, but unfortunately a lot of it comes from the production itself. This finale doesn't have any especially good animation, cinematography, directorial choices, or really anything to make it stand out from any other episode of the show. Even the music feels like it's doing everything it possibly can to undercut any possible emotion you could be feeling throughout. This is especially disappointing since the three seasons prior to this were actually very smart about accentuating the few moments they wanted you to take seriously without deviating from the style. Overall, it leaves this finale feeling rushed, tonally inconsistent, and overall not very satisfying.
I think there was a lot of potential here to make this finale special, but unfortunately it completely misses the mark. It makes me wonder if the decision to make this an hour long special was made from a practical standpoint rather than a creative one, like they had fifteen episodes worth of manga to adapt and were only allowed thirteen per season. In the end it ends up being just an okay final episode that's supported almost entirely by the quality of the other seasons. If you've loved the previous three seasons, then obviously you should watch this. If you thought they were meh or you dropped the series at some point, this finale won't do a single thing to change your mind.
3/5 finale for a 4/5 (sometimes even 5/5) anime.
