S T O R Y:
OK, let's just start off by saying that this is no ordinary shoujo anime. There is a more serious undertone to it for those that can understand it. What I really like about this anime is that it challenges the stigma of depression and tries to show others what it's like from the perspective of someone with depression vs. those who don't have it. In fact, I feel like this is more of a drama than just an everyday, slice-of-life show.
I find that depression is not commonly portrayed in animes which is why I found this show so interesting. I have
...
not interacted with people who have serious depression until this year actually, so this anime really hit home with me. Watching this was actually frightening to me because it made me think of the people I know in real life who might be going through the exact same thing.
There are lot of generic stereotypes used in this show, like parallel worlds and cliche character types, but I still feel like the plot turned out great. Instead of being tacky and overdone, the stereotypes were subtle and contributed to the story. In fact, I feel like these stereotypes are accurate depictions of how different people act in real life. Many people with depression try to hide behind a mask and don't like to burden others with their problems. The same goes with selfless people.
That's why I found this show so powerful. It was realistic, relatable, and tackled an issue that we may come across in real life.

The art in this anime reminds me of the art in mangas and less like traditional shows on TV, which would make sense since the show is based on a manga. I like that they kept the characters looking identical to the manga.
The low budget/13-episode artwork becomes apparent in some episodes, but I find that that's what gives some scenes the relief that they need. Otherwise, I find the art to be very pretty!

THE ENDING SONG HAS SO MANY FEELS. That is all.

The characters aren't all that great when you look at them individually, but put them together and they become something special. The close-knit group of high school friends is pretty cliche, but that's what I find so charming about this anime.
Naho is the typical shy, polite girl, which I found frustrating at times, but the series did show some good character development so that was good. Though sometimes it felt like she wasn't learning at all.
Suwa is your ordinary popular, athletic, good guy, but his role in this show is more than that. He pretty much becomes the anchor in this friend group. I'm not sure if I found any favourite characters in this show, but if I had to pick, Suwa would have probably been the closest bet. Selfless, strong, and always able to look on the bright side; this is exactly the kind of character that inspires me.

While I do really like fantasy and action, I also do enjoy a good, realistic anime once in a while. If you're someone who particularly enjoys dramas, this is not one that you want to miss. Even if you're one to shy away from shoujos and slice-of-lifes, I feel like this is one that everyone needs to watch in order to open your eyes or remind you about depression and that it exists in the world. Besides, it's only 13 episodes. Such a good message depicted in such a short time.

Though the series is a bit long at 24 episodes, the last 2 episodes salvaged what hope I had left for the series. There are a lot of important life lessons to be learned in this anime. While the ending may be perceived as happy by many, there were also some very depressing moments in the show because they were just so 'real' and relatable. I could actually find myself understanding and relating to some of the events in the story because I have been through them myself, which is probably what increased my affinity to the show.
Contrary to the show's
...
vibrant art and positive characters, there are actually many realistic ideas about 'real life' and how it doesn't usually go as planned. That's what I enjoyed most about this series; its ability to combine both ideals and reality into one show. In this way, I feel like it's not just your average cookie-cutter slice of life anime. While it does follow the generic "last year of high-school life, everyone ends up parting ways" kind of theme, it definitely was not like most high school animes in my opinion. Not to mention it's a special "arts" school so I found myself really excited about that, being a digital media student myself.

Sakurasou's artwork is what really drew me into watching the series. The artwork is beautiful and so vibrant. Even the artwork IN the show is beautiful (so meta!) and for that, this show gets a 10 for art.

Nothing particularly special about the soundtrack in this show. Now that I think back, I can't remember any of the music having an impact on me.

There is a VERY diverse range of character types in this show, and they're all living under the same roof. Amazing. I'm surprised they were able to last that long together. One of the more unique characters was definitely Misaki. She's the loud energetic type, but somehow I find her quite charming because she's just so crazy. At first, I found her to be a bit overwhelming and strange, but she eventually grew on me and became one of my favourite characters.
Mashiro, on the other hand, took me a loooooong time to begin to like. As a kuudere character, I had trouble reading her and understanding what she was feeling most times in the show (which I guess is normal for kuuderes), but what really got to me was her inability to do ANYTHING for herself. She can't even dress herself?! Honestly, it felt more like she was the child and Sorata was the father. I only began to really understand her character in the last couple episodes of the show and realized her character development, but up until then, I pretty much loathed her. I don't usually take to disliking characters this much, but I couldn't stand how dependent she was on Sorata for everything in her daily life.
I found myself liking the other characters as well, especially Nanami. Hard-working, independent, reliable, and quick to get back on her feet; she is exactly the kind of character that I enjoy and so she quickly became one of my favourites. Not to mention her ponytail is adorable.
I also very much enjoyed all the side stories that the series touched on. Instead of only following the lives of the main love triangle, the writers branched out and focused on other relationships and their obstacles/conflicts. Having this continuous break from the main characters was very refreshing.

I had my ups and downs while watching this show. I can agree that the series was way too long and did not need 24 full episodes. Nearing the end, I found myself watching just for the sake of finishing the series. When I thought I couldn't take anymore, the last 2 episodes saved it and, in fact, changed my entire view of the characters/story. Thus, the 7/10 instead of what would have been 5/10.
Overall, I probably would recommend this to people to watch, but be prepared for some ups and downs. This isn't a GREAT series, but it is one that you should put on your list to watch one day, especially if you're an artistic person in the art industry or studying art/design in school.
