Story 9/10
As a fan of the source material and someone who was never confused as to what was going on throughout the entire anime, I love the story and I think it's one of the most interesting stories I've ever encountered. However, the anime doesn't portray it well and is often two minutes of explanation, ten minutes of characters derping, and twelve minutes of heartbreaking scenes that don't make sense to anyone other than people familiar with the source material. The ending, however, was incredibly rushed and almost completely lacked a resolution.
Art 2/10 and Sound 9/10
Normally I give the art and sound one rating,
...
however there was such a stark contrast in quality between the two that I just couldn't. The animation was horrendous. I liked the style itself and I thought it fight with the mood of the Kagerou Project, however I think that shaft took its simplicity and decided to be lazy because the style had flat shading. The backgrounds were pretty, but the characters themselves only looked good when the camera was focused on them, and even that was hit or miss. Examples: Kuroha and Marry looked like drug addicts in the last episode. The sound, however, as expected as Jin, was magnificent, although sometimes it didn't feel right for the scene.
Characters 9/10
One thing the show did well was its portrayal of the characters. They gave each character screen time, and tried to give each one their time to shine. However, they didn't focus for very long on any one character, which gave the show a rushed and jumpy feel.
Enjoyment 9/10
No matter what shaft would have done with this, I probably would've enjoyed it. I'm so attached to all the characters and I find the story fascinating. However, SCREW. SHAFT. There. I said it. Shaft, you done f***ed up with this one. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great, and I will be mad at shaft for quite a while.

Story 7/10
The storyline is nothing particularly creative and inventive, and relies almost entirely on its characters. It follows the various adventures of the different gods and the main character interacting with them, so it feels sort of episodic with an over-arching plot in the background. That is, until the final few episodes where the true final plot is unveiled, which I admit it was fairly interesting but very cliched. I will give it props for going a different direction than what the first few episodes suggested, though.
Art and Sound 7/10
The Art was nothing truly spectacular, but it was by no means bad, either, and
...
the same could be said for the music. Nothing felt out of place or weird, but at the same time nothing really stood out besides maybe one of the titles and the opening and ending themes.
Characters 8/10
The characters are all quirky and lovable, and each have their own emotional baggage to deal with. This is actually one of the shows strong points, but that's a given since the story relies so heavily on them. Almost all of the important characters have a designated episode for them to cause drama and strengthen relationships with their friends.
Enjoyment 8/10
Overall, I probably enjoyed this show a lot more than I should have. I'm fairly certain that it was written for yaoi fan girls, so that's probably why. However, if you wouldn't want to watch a group of attractive young men who act gay and have sob stories and all fall for one girl, then this probably isn't the show for you. But if you do like that stuff, then you're probably going to like the show as much as I do.

Story 8/10
The story is hard to review without spoilers, but in terms of execution, the story, although fairly clichéd, is well-written and interesting. Although I felt it sort of dragged in the first half of the show with all the random 'let's run around and drop hints to the main mystery of the show then cover it up with comedy', the second half was very good and intriguing and drops a lot of the awkward humour and fan-service that was in the first half. The ending was predictable and I would've written it differently, however it wasn't bad and managed to give an emotional and
...
sad ending while still giving us a happy end. There were some plot holes with the explanations, but nothing that took away from the story or wasn't too hard to overlook.
Art and Sound 8/10
The color pallet used in the show was very fitting, relying heavily on darker tones and vibrant, warm colors. The box effect they did was somewhat overused and didn't seem incredibly well thought through, but they used colors and perspective well enough that it wasn't too bothersome. Excluding a few fantastic pieces, the sound was mostly forgetful. At the same time, they used what they had well, and the emotional scenes had very good songs that enhanced the mood quite well.
Characters 6/10
There was nothing in particular that I disliked about the characters, but there was nothing much that I really liked, either. One of the biggest draws of the show for me was the chemistry between Yuuko and Teiichi, but individually nothing really stood out. The only thing I can say about them is that they were both nice. The side characters felt more like the standard tsudere and ditz friends that almost every other anime has, but at least the show never forgot about them and made them somewhat important in the end.
Enjoyment 6/10
It was well executed, but nothing was done that I hadn't seen in other anime. The only impactful scene was one of the scenes of an exchange between Yuuko and Teiichi in the last episode, but the scene was undermined by the ultimate ending of the show. The first half was interesting, but it dragged and seemed to rely purely on the mystery surrounding Yuuko and the comedy for it's entertainment. The second half was much better, but was still nothing incredibly different or special.

Mushishi is a one of a kind treat that I feel like I could show to any anime fan and they'd enjoy it. It's calming yet interesting feel makes it's mood one of the most unique shows I've ever seen. While other animes will try to impress you by shoving its genius into your face, Mushishi is very subtle and has a very wise feel to it.
Story:
Normally, I don't enjoy episodic animes. If there isn't an interesting overarching plot line, I tend to find myself contemplating why I'm even watching the show. However, I never once felt that way with Mushishi. Sure, I was
...
a little disappointed with the no overall storyline when I first watched it, but then I came to realize just how calming and ingenious the set up was.
Art:
It fit the mood, but it does seem a little old for its time.
Sound:
Every soundtrack fit and was absolutely gorgeous.
Characters:
Well, the characters, excluding the protagonist Ginko, changed from episode to episode, but all the characters provided were interesting and memorable in their own ways.
Enjoyment:
Despite its flaws, Mushishi is one of the best executed anime I've ever seen. I enjoyed every second of it.
