Hal is like a longer but more boring version of Hotarubi no Mori e. They are both short, visually stunning movies with interesting characters and attractive story, setting, and plot. Both are fantasy/Sci-Fi, but focuses more on the slice of life. Both movies center on a male lead with traumatizing childhood and past experiences but meets a kind, loving, and naive female partner which brings significant changes to their miserable lives and how they value it. However Hal introduces certain unique plot-lines and twists unusual in a romance anime to compensate for its lack of emotional resonance and congenial/sympathetic characters which Hotarubi no Mori e has plenty of; a good compromise. If you liked one, you will surely love the other.
