When I first found this anime, I was hoping for a fun adventure show where likeable adventurers fight strange monsters, explore exotic landscapes, and meet interesting people...
and thats exactly what I got!
Now if that sounds good then stop reading and go watch it, but if you still need more convincing then keep reading and I'll avoid spoilers. The plots is simple: the main duo is trying to get to the bottom of a massive pit and the further down the stranger and more dangerous it becomes and the harder it is to return to the surface. It's an interesting premise but what really makes the

show great are the characters and the setting. The story follows Riko and Reg. Riko is a strong willed and energetic 11/12 year old girl training to become an explorer. Reg is a thoughtful and cautious robot boy without any memory. Their personalities contradict their physical abilities since Riko is an ordinary child while Reg is a nigh indestructible robot who can level city blocks. They're a lovable duo with great chemistry and well defined motives. You couldn't as for a better pair to follow on this adventure. The other characters are great as well. The end credits show a third character joining the party and I was wortied that they'd interfere with the original pair's appeal, but i ended up loving that character as well.
The abyss itself is the ideal adventure setting with many mysteries.
This show is surprisingly dark especially towards the end. While it was surprising, it wasn't out of place. The abyss is a deadly and unforgiving place and the characters are in incredible danger. The darker and intenser scenes help sell those points. One thing perhaps more surprising is the romantic elements. Romance should be expected whenever there is a male and female lead but it can be odd when those leads are 12. It isn't a pg disney channel romance either. There is serious sexual tension between Reg and Riko. While Riko isnt sexualized she is naked a lot and there is a lot of dirty dialogue. I can understand if the violence or romance turns some people away, but I don't think it's completely unjustified. Reg is a growing boy so its understandable he'd have those feelings toward his cute blonde froend. Especially considering all they go though and all the time they spend together.
