First, I would like to point out how painfully obvious it is that some of these reviews are from an anime only perspective. As someone who has read the manga and light novel, I knew full well going in that the Spirit Turtle Arc is basically a stop gap to what will eventually amount to the true sequel of season one once season three officially airs. So this anime review is going in with a more open minded approach.
Story: 6/10
Simply put, the story is indeed lacking but still necessary as a setup for the group's future events. This particular story arc is in fact the
...
most lacking that I have read from the manga and light novel. That is not to say it is really bad either. It serves as an important plot point to introduce the next major villain, reintroduce previous "villains", and as seen from episode 6, opening a way for heroes to travel between worlds. So while it may not be the most exciting story, it serves its purpose perfectly into finishing out season two and leading into season three.
Art: 8/10
Not much to say here, the art in my opinion is still as good as season one all the way up to how they captured the Spirit Turtles goofiness. The design on Naofumi's shields look as sharp as ever, as well as the new character design for Glass. L'Arc and Raphtalia look especially good this season, and what little fighting has been done has looked very clean and crisp. Really nothing to complain about overall, in fact, the only reason it isn't rated higher is because I've been spoiled by studios like MAPPA.
Sound: 8/10
Again, really nothing bad to speak of here and the fact that there aren't many combat scenes just means there isn't much to really compare. The main reason it's rate at an 8/10 is simply because of the clean sound the anime has when showcasing the Spirit Turtles attacks.
Character: 7/10
Won't go into too much detail here simply because there isn't much to note of. I'm rating it a 7/10 due to the focus on Naofumi taking on more of a leadership role, as well as the lack of screen time for the other three clown heroes. Expect to see more character progression in season three.
Enjoyment: 6/10
Not good, not bad...simply put, it's just there. This season served its purpose of bridging into season three without showing more than it needed to. From an anime only standpoint, this was probably terrible, but knowing what this is leading into has me very excited for the coming season. Guess that's a benefit of reading the light novel and manga.
Overall: 7/10
Good or bad, exciting or boring, it all comes down to personal preference. I'm only writing this review to give a non-bias look from both perspectives. As someone who is reading the light novel and manga, this season is leading to one of the more exciting story arcs. However, for someone who has only watched the anime, this season may feel broken as if it's missing something. The simple answer is that you're just missing the knowledge of what's coming, that is the saving grace for myself when it came to this season. Just know, that season three should definitely reignite your excitement in the series.
