Both are real-robot military mecha with a dark tone, and both also explore the concept of a Shinigami. Usually translated as Death God, or Grim Reaper, a Shinigami is a spirit that is drawn to death and also draws more mortals to their own deaths, usually violently. Naturally an entity like this would be right at home on a battlefield, and both these series play on that theme. Although, IGLOO does take the concept a bit more literally.

Goblin Slayer

Besides the usual sword and sorcery stuff that comes with a medieval fantasy setting, I couldn't help but think of Goblin Slayer several times while watching Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. The biggest overlap is the berserker Orson has an identical origin story to everyone's favorite goblin slaying mad man, only the Lodoss version is PG13. There's also a young priestess of a different earth mother goddess who takes the lead heroine position in the second part of the story.

The similarities are quite stunning considering how different these two works are. I've never read anything to confirm this hunch, but I feel confident that Demon City played an inspirational role in Fate. In each anime you have a young man dragged into a fight much bigger than himself by a young woman. In both cases sorcery is involved, as well as the legacy of a heroic father. On a more superficial level the antagonist of Demon City bears quite a resemblance to Archer in Fate. And both anime contain a scene of the protagonist drawing a sword from atop a small hill in reference to the Arthurian sword in the stone, both scenes are framed exactly the same way, same angle, shading, it's uncanny. Both series also make use of characters and references from classical literature and mythology.

It's almost like the mangaka enjoyed Trigun and said to himself, "Pretty neat, but what if it was a mecha?"
