Wonder Egg Priority

The nature of the two shows are shockingly similar, yet the actual shows themselves are more than different enough that no one in their right mind could accuse the writers of Wonder Egg Priority with "stealing from Madoka Magica". To put it really short, both WEP's and MM's first few episodes are giving the viewer only a very superficial and somewhat lighthearted, naive idea of what the anime is going to be about but as the story progresses they dive into deeper and heavier topics, replacing this superficial and lighthearted nature with a much darker general tone. From this much it's easy to guess, both shows are psychological dramas. Probably the main difference is that while MM's tone shifts relatively suddenly, WEP isn't hiding what will be ahead, it's simply the presentation and the straight-forwardness that changes a lot. Another huge similarity between these two anime is the really trippy and confusing, at times disturbing, visual presentation. During the first episode of WEP, I had to check if it was a new anime from Studio SHAFT and to my suprise it wasn't. I've never seen a studio being able to recapture Studio SHAFT's and Akiyuki Shinbou's signature and very unique style that can only be properly described as a "full-on drug trip". Considering the very similar nature the two anime have, and their obvious similarities in presentation, WEP is screaming that MM was it's main inspiration, especially that it is an anime original (just as Madoka Magica was), but it's very far from being just another rip-off, even all similarities considered, WEP still feels mindblowingly unique. So if you liked one, I can most certainly assume that you'd like the other half of this pair just as much.
