I don't see the "complex psychological anime" that is lauded as a masterpiece. It instead seems the author was uneducated in whatever he wanted to say. Dozens of side characters are unnecessarily introduced that rarely add anything to the story. We get their backstory and some introspection but never any development. The fact that their behavior, lines and reactions are lifeless and stereotypical make every episode unbearable. This makes the main plot drag, they are perhaps introduced as a scheme to conceal the emptiness of the content.
There've been illnesses that I look back to more fondly than sitting to watch a single episode from Monster.
