This is my first review.
First: I'd like to mention Shigatsu is the only anime on my list that is 10/10. Before I dive into why it's the highest rated anime on my list. One thing to understand is my rating is almost completely dependent upon 2 things. Overall enjoyment and lasting effects. These two things are something that Shigatsu has done so extremely well, and creatively that it kept me thinking about it for months. In fact, I stopped watching Shigatsu around episode 19 because I was watching it with a sibling and for roughly 5 months if anyone asked me what my favourite
...
anime was I'd mention Shigatsu.
Second: To avoid any spoilers I attempted to be as vague as possible. It'll be a little hard on my look for the characters. There will also be times when something may sound absolute but by assumption you can only assume, it's in my own opinion.
Now on to the review:
Story - This is interesting because the story is based around the characters and how just one spark in the main characters life. Changed everything. There isn't plotholes(Or rather there isn't any that I particularly cared to notice), and fortunately there just isn't any time where characters feel like they've temporarily lost some personality traits to move along the story. Which so many of the animes I've watched before have done. This story is almost completely carried but the character interactions and the pacing of which it happens. It does an excellent job of doing so as well.
Art: The art is actually something that impressed me. Which was interesting because the theme of anime was music. It is rare for an anime to try to show just the intensity of an atmosphere purely based on the quality of the art and small changes in the characters expressions. In any case, quite a few of the still frames in Shigatsu are my computers wallpaper. I actually sometimes sit watching them because it's soothing to look at.
Sound: I can't quite explain it. As I am not an "active" fan of classical music. I did find the soundtrack for this anime phenomenal and I did buy it. But if not only the classical music was great(How could it not be) but the BGMs in the background fit well with the atmosphere, not to mention there were some silent moments (which I'd like to count here as some excellent directing) that brought out the best in the anime. But, it does the anime no justice to simply explain the superlative effort they put in to it.
Characters: This is where the anime shines. You're given one of the best female leads I've seen to date, and You're given one of the best character developments I've seen since Eureka Seven. Kaori and Arima. With that the anime does something wonderful. It has character interactions that never fall flat and characters who do not seem to lose their personality at any given time. This is the very basis to having a good story. Shigatsu puts it's best foot forward and while doing that for the two main characters, It manages to never make a character feel like it's they're just to be there. Also, I find both of the main leads to be truly inspiring and relatable, They were two individuals that I anticipated seeing another scene between.
Enjoyment: This is an anime I'm sure I'll remember and reference for quite a while if not my life. It's something that I find truly inspiring and moving. That being said, the comedy was refreshing now and again.
Overall: I would really like to recommend this to anyone who is a fan of anime itself. Regardless of it's genre it's something that will give you a lasting memory and I believe that's worth at least a watch.
Will I forget - I hope I never will.
Did it reach me - You bet it did.
