***THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS***
First, I wanna make it clear that this story is never intended to be the successor of Death Note in any possible way, it isn't supposed to be that.
This is one of the most misinterpreted manga of all time by the legendary creators of Death Note. If you are going into Platinum End expecting anything like Death Note then don't watch/read it, just don't or if you hail from a religious upbringing, I'd advise that you stay away from this.
The premise of the story is similar to Mirai Nikki but at the same time completely different. 13 angels chose 13 humans to
...
become the next God by the order of the present God. This is not like any of the God becoming tournament manga. This takes more of a philosophical approach.
The main problems many "manga" readers say about this series are that the MC is bland, he has nothing good for him going or he didn't win in the end.
The protagonist is more of a pacifist guy who doesn't kill people and that's the reason people hate him. Tbh, I find it sad that Mirai's ideal of not killing anyone is commonly seen as weak or stupid. If anything, it's the most "divine" behavior in the entire series. There are many stories out there that have protagonists with the same ideal as Mirai but even they break this "rule" of not killing people for special occasions and that is what makes Mirai better.
Again I understand why Mirai would be hated as he is written as the complete opposite of Light but with the same intellectual abilities.
People love Light for how cold-hearted he was and hate Mirai for being the opposite of Light. Mirai was a character who was created for being the opposite of Light.
Light wanted to become God while Mirai just wanted normal happiness.
Now the biggest reason people hate Platinum End is that Mirai didn't become the God in the end. People wanted the whole cliche route of the protagonist being the special person in the end. Mirai being given the opportunity rejected it.
The ending took a dive into the unknown and left many people with a sour taste while being my favorite ending of all time.
The ending was very unique and something seen in very few stories out there.
This story was supposed to take a philosophical approach from the beginning, so the people who claim that the story took a turn in between are wrong. The philosophy was subtle and often missed in the beginning but when the main focus became philosophy again in a direct sense, people started to hate it.
Conclusion: Again, this story was supposed to be what Death Note was not.
Death Note was a Psychological Warfare Shounen while Platinum End was more of Philosophical Shounen which actually should've been Seinen.
It isn't your Battle Shounen, people, it isn't.
Comparing this with Death Note is equivalent to saying that Ohba didn't grow as a writer since 2006(that's when Death Note ended). He made a masterpiece known as Bakuman during this time period.
