This is prime example of shoving everything into the visuals and leaving the rest in the dust. The kawaii visual is everything in this anime. The colours, theming and sound effects carefully craft a very pink and marshmallow environment. Some might like it but some might find it too extra like me (but at this point it’s more of a personal thing). Yet, the animation still was very well executed.
As for the main plot, this anime presents 3 ships with all their own way of struggling to "make it happen". Either way, this whole anime was slice of life-ish with little to no progress every
...
2 episodes. I really don’t mind fillers but sometimes (like the swimsuit buying episode) it just leads to a small arc but nope it 180s to a fully different subject in the next episode second half of the episode. Fan service feels forced and pushed down your throat. It really gives this nothing sandwich of two slices of bread that squeezes 1% of progress, 30% fan service, 30% kawainess and the rest being filled with inconsistency due to the slice of life elements being put wrong.
Don’t get me wrong I knew what I was getting myself into, the anime started off very strongly! The foundation is very good but as it went on the point was lacking so much. I know this is a common thing in romance anime but this time it really felt like the prejudice was skyrocketing.

I've head of this romance anime quite a while ago but never went into it. No idea why. And I hate myself for that. This anime really pictures well so many aspects of life in such little amount of time (6 episodes).. It really impressed me. Thus, the animation, the story and ending (no spoilers I promise) is what's making it shine so much.
The animation quality is phenomenal. Sure there is better out there, but the fact that it only lasted 6 episodes compared to the recent years standard 12-13 episodes series make it so that budget was probably put on the quality over quantity.
...
And it shows, vfx and the barebone movement of the characters are fabulous. You don't get any useless panties shot or whatever, which is also very relaxing. We get to focus on what's important and what's beautiful. The animation really suits well the type of anime it is trying (and succeeding at) to be.
The story was absolutely touching and I've been on the edge of tears many times trough the episodes. It pictures a lot of heavy emotions with realistic feelings or scenarios, which I'm sure anyone can relate to at least one bit of it. No matter if it's the depression, sadness, love, loneliness or the overwhelm you may feel when you think of the pressure of wanting to succeed, you'd get at least one flashback at your own life. - (yappy yap about my life to explain my point, if you don't care skip to next paragraph) Recently, I have been struggling with my success and studies and what to do in life. Kind of in an existential crisis way. And seeing something similar happen in the anime gave me goosebumps. I can't explain much without spoiling, but you will see troubles and how they managed it. And I really think it can touch anyone in a way.
Most anime ends on a never ending bi-monthly chap release without any progress (ahem rent a girlfriend), but the ending was natural. We get answers in the matter of 6 episodes. But, where it would lose points, is that everything happens so fast that we barely see any character development. It's like they've always been like that. Sure it's a way of doing things, but it leaves a lot of questions and emotions untouched. It would probably need an OAV, but that's unlikely.
I'm glad I saw that anime. Without hesitation, it's a new pick in my top 10.

When it comes to school romcom, we have cliché all over the place. Kimi ni todoke does take part in some of them, but in a refreshing way. This romance does show unique traits and a very clever character development. It became my new favourite anime, without a doubt. Either because of the story, animation or just the execution, this anime has everything it needs to be a great romcom to watch by anyone.
The story is about an introvert girl finding love. Someone that scares easily others because of her facial expression. This bit from the synopsis may be a bit pushed to the extreme
...
in the anime, but it always comes down to humoristic elements or even something that can help progress character development or the story itself. It never feels wasted. The way it progresses too, sometimes takes too long. There are a lot (and I mean A LOT) of inner monologues.. I found myself skipping a few, because sometimes, it's just repeating what's been said already. I know that's how social anxiety work for some people, but we don't need this much description. It's an anime at the end of the day, we don't need every detail about the characters themselves.
The animation on the other hand is absolutely fabulous. It's a somewhat old anime, and still looking better than a lot of modern anime. The faces Sawako makes, the chubby face that is.. I just love it (current pfp, might be changed if you're reading in the future). The movements and visual effects are well executed and feel fluid.
The overall execution is just amazing. I rarely loved so much an anime. This anime was a blast to watch, and I've rewatched it plenty. It has its cons like the above-mentioned over use of inner monologues but beside that, I am sure that this anime could be a hidden gem for the unaware of its existence.

*spoilers in mentionned paragraphs*
This has to be said; this whole micro-season/movie or whatever is pointless. Stop at season 3. Period. It doesn't answer anything, it doesn't add anything and it surely doesn't help out anything. It is very dark and deviates so much from the prior 3 seasons. Season 1 and 2 were 9/10 and season 3 was a 10/10. How do we go from such high rated seasons to me giving a 4? Here's what's wrong.
*spoilers in this paragraph*
The whole point is lacking. Like seriously.. why build such emphasis on character development, make kaguya go from scary girl to a more open and more
...
frendlier personality to go dark mode and act worse than before? WHY? A sudden click? What's up with that? "That's my true self" and I call bs on that one leme tell ya! They call it masks and such but, as we hear inner thoughts we know what she really thinks and how she wanted to be around him and such.. we know her real personality.. then why does she goes full 180? It's not about her old self controling her and want the cute self to come back or whatever.. it's all about being dark and complex for being dark and complex.
*no more spoilers*
For what it is tho, I can say the execution is well done. It is very poetic with it's visuals and it impressed me a lot by bits. It does show interesting ideas and thought, and that's why I can't get bellow 4. It still doesn't make any sense, mind you. Don't watch it, pretend that never existed. You'll be weirded off and confused. It creates more problems than it solves.

So, it went down on a really traditional comedy/romcom path. The usual moves, usual character behaviour and even desing. By looking at a distance it really is nothing original. Which it isn't meant to be because of how short it is.. I mean, it is a 4 volumes manga, of course things have to happen fast, and in such short storyline you must have an original thing going and the rest doesn't really matter, and that original bit is literally the manga's title. She wants him to notice she likes him. And everything is basically built around this. Both jokes and love bits, they are
...
built around what they could do to affect their relationship, and that's where it really surprises.
People might get the wrong idea of what kind of manga it is, which is why I think a lot of people might get offset by the first chapters. But it takes a 180 quite quickly. In a Nagatoro kind of way, it really goes from teasing and ecchi to cute and wholesome. The ecchi mostly disappear quickly and the romance really kick off early.
And this is why it is worth a shot. I mean, it is really a super cliché romance manga but for what it tries to be it really does it great! It never promised (either in the title or synopsis) anything too crazy or out of the oridnary, it was just a short romance story with a tiny tweak that was well executed.

I AM SO MAD AT THIS ANIME OH MY GOD
The potential it had and how it got ruined so quickly is really impressive. But, if you got nothing to watch, you can watch it! It's not bad, just really questionable..
Okay well, the first 5 episodes are REALLY AWESOME. Some complex relation between characters.. it really is great to get to know them through their motivations on this drama dump. It was a pretty unique way to develop an anime, also this early on. I also really like the humor of this anime. It was stupidly funny. (Light spoiler on the humor type, not about the
...
story. Skip to the next paragraph) There was a running gag with a bench that got me every time. Also, when the MC breaks the 4th wall and start saying stuff as someone watching the anime it's really funny as it's not seen often.
But that's exactly where it falls appart. It tries too much. It became ecchi and building humor around ecchi, let alone ecchi itself, it never end up well for me. Beside, that last episode was dogwater. I didn't watch the group of 13-15 episodes thing caues at this point I didn't cared no more cause I lost hope in the love triangle. The love triangle just kept on growing and growing.. I know it's a harem, but this harem was so messy and kept adding new girls and it's just infuriating.
Anyway. If you don't care about romance watch this, it's really more of a solid comedy and drama. The romance bit is cringe and horrible.

oh. well I didn't expected to like this one tbh.
I started reading it as I head it was kinda similar to nagatoro. so I bought the first manga. I really did tought the ecchi was too much at first. BUT. I was curious.. something got me thinking. So I got the second one. Little did I knew, I was to impatient to wait vol.3 official translation to release so I went to mangadex and here I am now.. read all 155.5 chapters.
This one is unique and the female antagonist's growth is just pure awesomeness. If you didn't liked the first vol, read the second one
...
and you will start LOVING it.
A must for romcom or romance lovers!
Always looking for new chapers of this manga!!
