What happens when you try to integrate unnecessary drama into a wholesome romance and slice of life? Well, it is a strange combination for sure, but that is what NecroMaid is.
NecroMaid is a manga that had an extremely promising beginning for a slice of life manga, with elements of romance and cooking. The setting at the start was nice, the characters are very charming, and the world is pretty enjoyable. There's really nothing much to complain about it, especially with how much positive vibes the manga had been emitting.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't have made a review if that was all there's to it. For some inexplicable
...
reason, the author of NecroMaid decided that the manga needed more depth, and therefore added a villain out of the blue. This was fine and decently executed, but still felt unnecessary. It also doesn't help that the pacing of the manga gets weird during this arc, with the romance between the two main characters seemingly forced, and abrupt drama appearing here and there.
These issues would've been fine if the author turned back and continued the slice of life, but no, they doubled down on this drama and added another villain. It is during this time where the manga starts to become a mess, with bunch of questionable decisions made by the characters which lead to confusing, contrived plot advancements. The story during this point feels like it has lost its direction, and now is just grasping at the nearest ledge in order to stay coherent. The ending, although not necessarily bad, was still left much to be desired.
Overall, NecroMaid is an interesting manga with a promising start, but with unfortunate series of decisions, had a great downfall and end up losing a majority of reasons it was charming in the first place. I would only recommend this to those who seek to kill time, but even then, it wouldn't be my first picks.

I'd rate this a very solid 7.5/10.
Tokidoki is a very short, yet pleasant One-shot with an incredibly clever twist waiting the readers at the end. On my first reading, I expected the story to be a straightforward one with the MC making the most of FMC's seconds until she left the world. Little did I know, not only did this story prove me wrong, but it also left quite an impression on me.
What I really liked about Tokidoki were its subtle hints scattered throughout the earlier parts which foreshadow the ending. At first glance, it is easy to miss due to how trivial it is.
...
However, when pieced together, it truly gives the ending a much more meaningful impact, knowing that it has been built up at the first few pages of the story.
Overall, for the length of the One-shot, it does deliver quite a lasting impression and is certainly worth your time. It's just that I wish it wasn't a One-shot, especially with the unexpected twist combined with the cleverness and subtlety of the foreshadowing. It would've definitely made for one of the biggest plot-twist in an ongoing series.

In a world where supernatural, discreet youkais exist, some are bound to interact with humans. This ultimately leads to circumstances that would become inexplicable, and thus raise suspicions regarding the existence of the said beings. To maintain the obscurity of youkais' existence, the FMC is chosen to be the "God" of youkais, and it is her duty to provide logical explanations to such supernatural cases, even if it means to make up one.
What makes the manga so enthralling to me is just how elaborate it is as a whole. Each arc opens with a clear direction and skillfully introduces each character. As the story progresses,
...
it also endows satisfying resolve in both the invented explanations and the actual occurring events. Concluding arcs are met with much-needed break chapters. They serve as great pauses, showing how the characters interact with one another outside of the drama, and expands the world-building thoroughly with small details here and there. This is all complemented with the characters, who have consistently likable personalities all throughout with very rational thought process.
Aside from the story, another aspect of note is the art, as it holds one of the most breathtaking panels chapter to chapter. However, the dense amount of text can slightly interrupt the readers from fully appreciating the stunning art. As a mystery manga, it is naturally more text-heavy than your average action or romance counterparts, hence it'd be best to approach it as an abundantly-illustrated novel, which doesn't detract from the enjoyment but rather tremendously amplifies it.
