After watching DM and seeing how much hype this show was getting I decided to go along and watch it too, little did I knew that actually it was really hated on and the hype was only coming from the nostalgic fans.
I’ll be covering the og Japanese version on this review; some SPOILERS ahead.
GX suffers from being messy and its severe lack of direction, it’s all over the place as it tries to cram a bunch of plotlines all together. The first season is literally just a school life anime with a little kick to it, it was mediocre at best, the second season was
...
okay-ish, some cult takes place at duel academia which was very random to the point of laughter, I mean honestly GX as a whole is very random and that’s its charm, the third season is where it gets interesting for once, but by then everything changes and the show takes a whole different approach, they showed a whole new cast and set most of the characters aside yet again. Yubel made a good main antagonist despite having quite the twisted ambition for it, but he didn’t deserve to be redeemed since he caused a lot of misfortune despite it all being fixed later on and him not having ill intentions to begin with (since him and judai knew each other in their past life). Season fourth…well, it became quite melancholic and judai is no longer the same (since the real him ceased to exist after fusing himself with yubel), but it’s realistic than he fell off with his useless friends and yeah…
All in all, it’s mediocre, it’s the first spin off so I can’t be too harsh and despite the art and animation being not so good the songs were nice at least.
I still have no idea why it’s called GX, there was one stupid small tournament called Genex in season two but I refuse to believe it got its title from it.
If I was held at gun point and was asked to explain the world building and the storyline I’ll be a goner.
If you ignore how a lot of characters get forgotten so many times(looking at you fubuki and misawa), how the world revolves around judai, and how inconsistent the story is, then you’ll be fine with this show.

Yes, I’m aware it’s nearly 25 years since this anime came out, but I still had to express my thoughts on yu gi oh because it does have a special place in my heart, I’ll like to note that I’ve only seen season 0 back when I was 12, which I barely remember anything about, of course I went and skipped to duel monsters directly this time since naturally it’s the most known anime out of the series, keep in mind that that this review will be covering the original Japanese anime only! SPOILERS from here onwards!!!
SYPNOSIS: Yu gi oh is a card based playing
...
game about a boy named yugi who solved the millennium puzzle making him the heir of the pharaoh soul.
The anime starts off quite silly and even funny; it excepts you to know what’s happening and has such a random timeskip right after the first episode,
then comes the first tournament! The duelist kingdom arc which takes nearly 40 episodes for no real reason other than yugi/yami losing his star chips every time he manages to get close to collecting them all, or jounochi having his own dedicated duels of gathering the said star chips that he happens to lose too in the process, after some tossing and turning yugi and friends finally manage to get to the finals, bla bla yami/yugi beat evil mind reader pegasus to never be seen again (in the manga he was killed by yami bakura but oh well) in the span of four episodes only, crazy considering how some trivial duels took about the same amount.
Then filler time.
Second tournament begins which takes longer than the last tournament, battle city arc; in the first part nothing much happens except for the creators obvious favouritism for jounochi, this guy has quite the episodes dedicated for his sake giving off mc vibes, you’ll be able to watch yu gi oh as long as you like him if not then this anime will be hell to get through. So things start to get serious once this malik guy shows up, who tries his best to ruin yami/yugi’s life for totally vague reasons, and right when you think he couldn’t get any bad his yami side appears which is somehow far worse than his original self. He has some good backstory tho. Uh yeah filler time again! Then everyone is like let’s pretend this is never happened!
Second part of this tournament that seems like forever, nothing much I could say about this arc other than cool jonouchi’s duel and malik’s defeat which I really don’t feel like talking about.
Then a disgusting amount of filler starts on from here to like ep 200.
Finally! Last arc, by now the animation has got quite bad for some reason except for that atem and yugi dramatic holding hand scene, ok so at last yami goes on a journey to find his memories which sadly wasn’t as promising as it originally seemed to be, wasted potential, bla bla yami bakura is beaten, bla bla, farewell yugi/yami scene made me tear up, and end.
Long summary few… now to the pros and cons:
PROS:
More of a personal preference but I love the artstyle and atmosphere.
The ost is perfect, openings are good when it comes to the songs…yeah except for the last opening visuals the others are lacking.
The whole idea and premise is very interesting
The show was quite enjoyable, but enjoyable doesn’t equivalence good
I like yugi.
CONS:
The execution was quite messy.
This series biggest issue is dragging off, They could ended this whole anime in less than 100 episodes.
How the quality of animation drops randomly and way too often.
This is totally personal but I wish they explored more on the real bakura’s character and even had him duel I really like him.
Also a personal take but I feel they should gave more opportunities to yugi so his victory against atem will feel more plausible.
Kaiba exists.
In conclusion, yu gi oh holds quite the potentiel I honestly can’t help but like this show despite how terrible it gets at times.

I understand where the hate for zexal is coming from, it might have been more lighthearted than the previous series but regardless it had its fair share of dark moments (talking about the sub obviously), putting that aside this will be my review of both zexal I and II which will contain SPOILERS of course;
ZEXAL I: keeping it short, it was really mediocre, neither awful nor really good, it was trying to be very humorous which honestly made me laugh at times, then the ending felt very rushed that failed to give a satisfying conclusion.
ZEXAL II: now we’re talking;
Unlike people hating YUMA for being the
...
way he is, I couldn’t bring myself to hate him, yes; he’s clueless and easily fooled, but that’s his charm, because regardless of how many times he gets tricked and deceived by others he never gives up and will always believe in them, most people say he’s stupid for it, but honestly I find it beautiful how he still sees the good in others and extends a hand to them, I think that forgiving someone after betrayal instead of going for revenge is true strength.
And what makes ZEXAL more worthy is the development between YUMA and ASTRAL, well most of the show was about their relationship anyway and how they learn to grow on each others despite how different the two are, still I think all the zexal fusions designs were awful felt like super saiyan rip off lol.
SHARK and KAITO, I honestly did not like them as much as I wanted, well kaito was fine, he was too cold and nonchalant which almost made him seem emotionless but that’s the author attempt for you to write your average bad boy, SHARK on the other hand I just couldn’t bring myself to like him, hey don’t get me wrong I don’t hate him and I really tried to like him but the author felt like he was favouring him really, making him NASH a king in his past life and a “righteous” barian, I hated it, the worst part is once he remembers his past life he doesn’t hesitate to throw everything behind and go against his former friends while justifying his actions by saying stuff like “it’s my destiny” or “it’s for my people”, but I admit he had the biggest development in the whole series. And the bad guys going against each others was a satisfying sight.
VECTOR, in a few words, he’s the best, he made the show worth it for me, he was pure evil and just didn’t care, I actually was on his side most of the time, also one reason why I hate shark is because I just wanted vector to win against him which is totally biased but whatever.
Then of course there’s the school friends which made zexal unbearable for me, they refused to develop and just dragged the show, if I could erase them along with kotori (aside from being a girl who existed solely for fanservice there was nothing to see) zexal would have been top tier.
The story was entertaining enough and honestly it had its moments, then there’s the ending, not my cup of tea, it left me unsatisfied moreover yuma and astral goodbye felt too sad for me, I also couldn’t care less about everyone coming to life, it was an open ending that had no basis whatsoever, I checked the manga ending just in case and it was much worse (and more gay) so I should be grateful I suppose tho.
The openings were pretty good along with the soundtracks, I enjoyed all of it.
This series is a so-so for me, but it kept me on my toes and was a fun ride regardless of its downs.

I have never seen the remake but I decided to start with the original series first, so here are my thoughts:
STORY: through the first half of the show I thought it would be a heartwarming and sweet story, turns out I was wrong, it wasn’t just that which makes it special to me, in general it was well written and did a great job in portraying the character’s feelings but still I wish they explained more about the plot and the characters
CHARACTERS: I like most of the characters not all of them though, but they all have their depth and reasons which kept me
...
entertained to know more about them
MUSIC: I love the opening, the lyrics were meaningful and fitting of the story, same with the soundtracks
OVERALL: I felt like the story had more to deliver considering how the ending felt lacking but despite that it had me entertained especially near the end, in conclusion I think it will be a good idea to give it a try
