Vinland saga was an absolutely wonderful anime, and I decided to make it my first full review. I will go into all the normal things, visuals, sound, characters, and story. Starting off I absolutely recommend this show- hence me giving it a 10/10. However, it is very harsh, and there are mature ideas and some very gory scenes. But if you can handle that, then this is an absolute must watch!
Visuals: 9/10
Vinland Saga was made by Wit studio, and they did a great job on the visuals. There is so much detail put into everything, and movements are smooth. It also ramps up to incredible
...
levels during important/action scenes. However it is a definite step down from Wit studios other work, Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan is better, visually, in every single way. And the largest downside is the CGI, which looks pretty good sometimes, but there are some shots that look absolutely ATROCIOUS. I swear there are points that it looks like a mobile game. I was seriously bringing the visual score down to an 8 because of some of the CGI. Except there is less of it as it goes on, and otherwise it looks great.
Sound: 10/10
Everything sounds great. The OST fits perfectly and is very cinematic. It makes Vinland Saga feel like a movie and adds so much to the show. It's perfect in my opinion, even if it isn't very memorable. Along with that, I loved all the openings, and endings. Another great thing about the sound is the voice acting. All the voices fit perfectly and do a great job at acting out the scenes. Honestly, some of the best voice acting out there. Thorfinn and Askeladd are voice acted perfectly, with so much emotion. And there isn't anything to complain about in sound editing so the sound is an easy 10/10.
Characters- 10/10
The characters are the best part of Vinland Saga. Thorfinn is one of the best MCs of all time, and Askeladd is an absolutely great villain. All the other major supporting characters like Thorkell and Canute are done so well and show a lot of development. Even random Vikings and people you see are written very well, and feel like real people. Along with the voice acting the characters are done insanely well.
Story 9/10
Personally, I have never liked political, historical dramas, but somehow Vinland Saga worked for me. There are some crazy turns, and it knows how to keep you engaged, and wanting to see what happens next. It also has a kind of "western" feel so it's also good for people who don't watch anime. It includes mature themes and feels very realistic, which adds to the engagement. The only things keeping it from being a 10/10 are that it is sometimes hard to follow, and the show itself is very character-driven. But it is very close to being a 10/10, and I was heavily considering giving it that score.
In conclusion Vinland Saga is a great show, that will certainly be remembered as a classic in years to come. Even though I watched it over a year later I'm still mad that Demon Slayer won anime of the year over it. If you have friends that don't watch anime or aren't big fans of it, show them Vinland Saga. And if you haven't watched it yet DEFINITELY do that.
