Apocalypse Zero is a two part mid 1990s OVA which ticks every box that either made this era utterly brilliant or one to completely avoid depending on your preferences. It has excessive violence from the start with people exploding from the inside out, being diced into small pieces and having their faces sucked off to name but a few, it has nudity, it has hysterical localisation and over the top moves. While plenty other anime and OVAs have done this before Apocalypse Zero turns the volume up to 11 and then stands there with a smug grin on its face as the lunacy explodes on

For most of us in the western world the Legend of Lemnear first appeared as yet another 1990s pulp produced OVA however it was actually from the mid-1980s with the delay simply being the product of waiting for a decent localisation to reach our shores in the days before fan-subbing and the internet made almost all releases available in a matter of days after they were released in their native language. The Legend of Lemnear certainly holds its own appeal despite the era it comes from being associated with large numbers of dubious quality OVAs arriving due to it having a rather dark tone and

A 1990s OVA full of ninjas, over the top violence and set in feudal Japan? I’m sure plenty of people think they’ve seen the same set up plenty of times but trust me, Black Lion is very much its own beast. Within the first minute you know you’re in for something very different as the future collides with the traditional setting with enough blood splattered across the screen for even the most diehard fan of this sort of OVA to be suitably impressed, from there on out Black Lion grabs hold of your eyes and takes you on a 45 minute thrill ride without ever

One of the more bizarre OVAs to come out of the 1990s Crimson Wolf may at first glance be more of your standard throwaway nonsense to come out of this era however there is a little bit more to it than that.
The plot as one would expect is a contrived blend of mysticism, martial arts and gangsters though looking beyond the superficial silliness there is a deeper underlying political and philosophical message to the whole tale which is actually a fairly delightful layer of depth to the hour or so of your life you may feel you’ve just wasted. Throw in the obligatory cringe worthy ... Oct 11, 2012

Unfortunately Burst Angel is best known for its over the top and consistent fan-service which without doubt was deliberately injected into every episode sometimes in a rather jarring and obvious manner such as the swimming pool scene in the "Wash this Flower Garden with Blood!" episode however if you’re prepared to look past that then there is a decent series here underneath all the titillation.
To start with the anime looks and sounds wonderful with a gritty cyberpunk aesthetic running throughout the series which conveys the dystopian world the action takes place in with aplomb, special mention must go to the soundtrack which is great in ... |
