Violet Evergarden is a beautifully written, scored and drawn anime. It is an anime that has it all. It is KyoAni's masterpiece and the bar by which every drama anime should be measured.
Story: Violet Evergarden builds the story slowly, much like a good book does. It never feels rushed but yet moves at a nice pace throughout the series. The use of flashbacks is tastefully done to enable the watcher to get have an idea what kind of life Violet led before the beginning of the series. Although the fighting sequences are short lives int he flashbacks, they give the same "realistic feel"

as the rest of the anime. It's episodic nature allows you to come to know each epsiodes unique characters but the excellent writing flawlessly entertwines each epsiode into the greater story arc of Violet's growth as a human being. I will say that if you are fans of anime with tons of fast past action and violence, then this is not the anime for you. If you are looking for anime that takes you on an emotional journing, you need to look no further.

Characters: The writers carefully develope each and every persistant character over the course of the anime. you feel that you get to know each of the major characters surrounding Violet, both their personalities and dreams. Even the characters that only have speaking roles in one or two epsiodes, feel flushed out and full of life. This goes from the nurse in epsiode one to the last characters introduced int eh series. Then we get to Violet herself, you come to know, love and cheer for Violet as the series progresses. All the characters are relatable to real life.

Animation: KyoAmi has a reputation for its beuatiful animation work and Violet Evergarden is their masterpiece. there is no part of this show that is not beautifully renders from its opening credits to endings credits in each epsiode. There is simply no studio better at creating a "photo realistic" world then KyoAni. Even those precious few who do not like this anime give it perfect to near perfect scores for animation. From pulling back to show beautiful vistas, to closeups to show the emotions reflected in characters eyes, it is a 13 episode artisitic masterpiece. The attending to detail in what to animate as well, the putting of hands into pockets when someone is obfuscating the truth, the detailed expressions of character's face that show the emotion of the moment so well, the rippes on the water or the way the breeze tugs at strands of hair. There is nothing about the animation that is not beautifully rendered.
10/10
Sound/Musical Score: KyoAni made an excellent decision to use classical style music throughout the animation. The music adds to the emotion of every scene where they use, whether it is to lift us up or bring us to tears, the music is excellentl written and their use of it in each epsiode is masterfull. The Vocal themes to the anime fit the series perfectly.

Overall: There is not much more to say at this point that I have not already said.
10/10
Personal Adendum: I have watched over 20,000 epsidoes of anime (the number is unscrtain as i just finished going through the letter "R" currently with "S" beyond yet to go.) and have rated and will rate very few anime as masterpieces and write reviews for even less. This is one of the few and I rate it so high for good reason. When I review, I do my best to leave out my personal bias. I usually do love anime dramas as I prefer more action and comedic anime's, but there is the exception to every rule. Violet is that exception for me. It is simply put, the best anime drama that I have watched.
