Similar art styles. Both dark and mind-bending. Very original, edge-of-your-seat premise.

Death Note

It's really hard creating a long running thriller series in the medium of animation, mainly because animation doesn't have any real, live-action actors to evoke some kind of terror in front of a camera. Both Death Note and Monster have presented exhilarating concepts that feels totally unprecedented in the thriller genre.

Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho

Bleach is the obvious recommendation, not just because it is similar but because Bleach is just a little bit better, at least when we are comparing the highs of Bleach compared to the highs of Yu Yu Hakusho. When you reach the famous Soul Society arc you'll understand my point here in that awesome characters in a mainstream shonen series is definitely more valuable than anything else. And, this might be because long running shonen anime comes with some side effects that you are no longer interested how powerful a super saiyan gets because the idea of destroying every single cell in a person's body can only take you so far in that eventually bores you to death. In short, you've got to like the character that is always kicking ass in battle and Bleach not only offers a really cool cast of characters, but is also paying attention to a style that is more diverse and unique.

Megalo Box

Both shows have a similar style in terms of direction and music. It feels like something that Watanabe would direct by having the soundtrack have influence on the overall vibe of the culture in the story. Megalobox depicts a city and suburban life whereas Champloo wants you to think city and suburban with it's soundtrack. Both shows seem to want to fuse elements of hip hop in their soundtrack or have their characters subtly indicate to you a hip hop scene.

Macross Plus

Macross Plus raised the bar for mecha anime in the 90s with artistry that was unlike anything I've ever seen. It is truly what Gundam could have accomplished if it ever got it's money's worth with a great director like Shinichiro Watanabe and an amazing music composer like Yoko Kanno.

Aoi Bungaku Series
|
This should be at the top of any recommendations list for Death Note, but unfortunately will not because it is very unheard of. Aoi Bungaku Series (first four episodes) features the character design work from Takeshi Obata who originally worked on the Death Note manga. Madhouse was the animation studio that worked on both Death Note and Aoi Bungaku. Fans will enjoy seeing how Madhouse capitalizes on the animation aesthetic from Death Note in the first story that Obata contributes to, and will appreciate the main protagonist that almost perfectly resembles Light Yagami.
