You ever hear that joke; "Why did the plane crash?" and the punchline is
"Because the pilot was a loaf of bread"?
In the same way, one could say that Aldnoah Zero 'crashed' as a mecha anime because its protagonist is like a loaf of bread. Expressionless and lifeless. His face remains straighter than my sexuality.
Inaho, the MC Alpha that's so badass; calm, collected and cunning - he doesn't need intimidating dialogue or brawn to beat his enemies, just his superior intellect. He is the one of the primary reasons I didn't enjoy this anime. I can't relate to a loaf of bread after-all, so
...
why should I care when he gets ----- in his --- in episode -- ? Heck, I might have even enjoyed that scene really.
MC Alpha, is only Alpha because he can conveniently overcome any problem with calculations and scientific shit, or strategies pulled out of his asshole, really. If you thought Inaho's anus was stretched from that Aldnoah Zero Yaoi hentai (probably Inaho x Slaine) you looked at last night, think again. Nearly every episode, despite the Martian mech proving itself practically invincible to pleb Earth weapons, Inaho always finds a weakness within 2 minutes of fighting and makes a game changing play. Bam.
G fucking G (not even a well played).
The other MC Slaine, he's just constantly copping shit so often that you're forced to feel sorry for him. The Martian aristocracy throw abuse at him like bronze players throw League games. He gets put in the friendzone by his love-interest the princess because he's so beta. He gets stabbed in the back by Inaho, even though they just worked together and both want to help the princess? His story is intentionally made tragic and kinda pathetic to evoke sympathy.... but this serves as reverse psychology, and instead makes you feel otherwise and dislike the guy for being such a fuckin beta compared to MC Alpha.
The rest of the cast aren't really worth mentioning. Girl 1 that has crush on Inaho. Redundant school mates that are later forgotten. Inaho's sister. A war veteran, struggling with PTSD (sounds deep right?), except can't get over his past and does nothing useful throughout the series. A Martian princess who appears to promote pacifism but is totally fine if MC Alpha kills some Martian baddies.
Mediocre cast.
Characters (solid 3/10) aside though, the plot (5/10) isn't amazing. The premise seems pretty cool and lured me in, Earth vs Mars, I was expecting lots of space battles or some shit. Nope. Watch as Earth gets wrecked effortlessly by bloodthirsty Martians who seem too overpowered for their own good. The typical AZ episode goes like this;
Oh no! What's that? A highly advanced Martian mecha just killed expendable mechas 11/22/33/44/etc. ? Damn, that weapon they have looked super strong when it killed Expendable Squad X, maybe Earth doesn't stand a chance.... but don't worry! MC Alpha willl just pull a plan out of his butthole, and singe handedly carry Earth to victory. Princess! Lend us your magic powers just so we can kill your people to show them how much we want peace :D. Meanwhile in space - Slaine? You wanna help us Martians? Get fucked, you stupid Terran piece of shit, good for nothing, ungrateful dog, etc.
Despite what I feel was poor about this anime, the art (8/10) and sound (9/10) was really great. Good aesthetics, really good soundtrack. Enjoyable opening and ending. Enjoyment-wise however, wasn't super impressed, and more on the disappointed-side.
Overall, I'd say Aldnoah Zero is decent for a mecha anime. While the fights were pretty much the same, featuring a Martian mecha using strange, unconventional weaponry (I have no clue why one uses big ass fists to try and fist her way through everything... wouldn't laser guns or maybe even regular guns have been fine??) destroy lots of expendable Earth forces, then have MC Alpha cheese the Martian mecha with some crap he's just made up on the spot or even worse, just cheeses them coz they have no clue how to fight on Earth (he beats them with water couple times, ahahaha). they were still slightly enjoyable to watch.
