Koe no Katachi

Both Tamako Love Story and Koe no Katachi are directed by Naoko Yamada and produced by Kyoto Animation. Direction styles are distinctively her own, with use of cinematographic techniques and use of flowers as metaphors and right choice of music enhancing the experience. Tamako Love Story has a straightforward story although depth is added by the heroine's deceased mother and heroine's friend Midori whose role I would not disclose here (watch the movie. It's a modern classic). In Koe no Katachi, the themes are more dark and serious and an important side character, Ueno, is voiced by the same voice actress who played Midori- and she does an excellent job portraying that difficult character.

Tamako Love Story

K-On! is made by the same director (Naoko Yamada), chief character designer (Yukiko Horiguchi), scenario (Reiko Yoshida), the same studio (Kyoto Animation), and depicts a similar story of high-school teenagers in a slice-of-life setting, exploring the same theme of friendship and maturing. There are major differences, though. K-On! Movie was a great fan movie, whereas Tamako Love Story is a great individual film (and not just a spin-off from the TV series Tamako Market). Tamako Love Story involves a story of love, lost love, family, death, neighborhood community, and overcoming of hardship, besides friendship and maturing. While K-On! focuses on the bright sides of life, Tamako Love Story looks at life "from both sides now." As of date (April 2014), I dare call Tamako Love Story the best film produced by Kyoto Animation; it's probably the best animated film ever of a teenage love story in a slice-of-life setting. Anyone who has liked K-On! Movie would like Tamako Love Story, vice versa. The two are masterpieces.
