Kokoro ga Sakebitagatterunda is a clear example of how an emotional trauma as a child can affect an entire life and your future relationships.
(All written below may contain spoilers)
Story. To put it simply, it’s a journey of psychological recovering from the moment Naruse - a girl who’s lost her ability to speak, meets a few colleges and has to perform a musical. I watched the movie in parts, after the first hour I still hadn’t gotten the feels for it, it was pretty week and I almost gave up on watching the second half. Lucky me i didn’t!
It’s for sure a slow
...
start with a relatively long introduction on the characters and specially Naruse’s story, but all the build up is definitely worth the ending.
Later on we learn that the mysterious egg, the castle and her inability to speak were nothing more than an analogy that Naruse herself created in her mind as a child after being accused of destroying her parents’ marriage. It really is mentionable, such a clever way to show how a trauma as a child could influence her so much to the point of mentally and emotionally caging herself due to the guiltiness of being a “chatterbox”.
Art. You don’t even have to double check the studio to know which this is from. A-1 Pictures’ style is clear here, but they did focus a lot more on the details in background on this movie, which was great for this movie. Overall it’s a very enjoyable and clean art, definitely one of my favourites.
Sound. Amazing vocals and melodies. It seems off at first, specially if you’re not used to musical animes. But throughout the movie, a whole mood and baggage is built up to the climax, making the songs the most emotional possible.
Characters. My main problem with this was A-1 Pictures’ lack of creativity to create new characters. The same staff and set of Ano Hana, from 2011, was used to produce the movie, so it’s expected to have some similarities. But at some point it felt as even a parody or an alternative movie to Ano Hana. For starters, all of them have the same personality, love triangles and facial expressions, specially Sakagami, who has exactly the same hair and body design as Jinta. The whole plot is technically the same, the character is free from some kind of guilt from the past that was emotionally locking them up. And of course the singing/musical parts who carried a lot of feelings like Ano Hana’s ending.
Overall, if you have never watched anything related to A-1’s work, this will be a very pleasurable experience, I myself enjoyed it, knowing the similarities. It’s an outstanding work of art and sounds that will leave you with that “woah” feeling afterwards.

Cencoroll is the kind of anime that if you make up an explanation, try to fit and label in a certain genre or relate to any other anime, your whole experience will be distorted. Keep in mind that it is a short movie (30 min) based on a one shot manga. It’s not supposed to have a development on every area.
Story. In the movie’s universe there are these giant white “monsters” that are not even named. None of the W’s questions needed for an explanation or even just a theory are answered (who, why and how). Both for the people who apparently can control these
...
kinds of monster or the monsters themselves.
Regardless, it was a very good adaptation, focusing not on how’s, but on the actual main happening: the match between the boys. The proposal still runs completely from the normal stories we’re used to seeing on movies and manages to give us a creative new world in only half an hour.
Art. Remembering that it was made on 2009, both art and story were ahead of its time. If i hadn’t seen the dates i wouldn’t recognize this drawing style as of something from 10 years ago. Characters and background were nicely done, but what caught my attention specially was the colour pallet. Matching perfectly with the animation and the theme, the grey and white gave a minimalist and delicate complementary tone to it.
Sounds. The sound, or - the lack of it, was what amazed me the most during the action scenes. There was no need for an intense or dramatic melody, the background sounds were enough. I can go even further and say that if there were actual themes, this anime would not have came out with the vibe that it did.
On this area we can notice sparks of minimalism as we did on the art, which just serve to add to each other and create a calming feeling to it, contrasting with the story.
Characters. Besides Cenco, there were only three characters on the main screen. As a short movie, there was clearly no room for deep developments and bounding between any of them. No background to the relationships with the “monsters” and the W’s again. But at the same time the author did a very good job presenting them, showing only the basics and not leading the audience to crave more information. Since the beginning the proposal was shown clear, the objective isn’t to satiate our questions.
The only problem i had on this area was the lack of emotion with the main character. He seemed off, always at ease and calm no matter what was happening.
Overall it was a very enjoyable experience, specially due to the unusual story and great artwork

Right after the boom of Kuroko no Basket, Haikyuu came out to satiate everyone’s need for more. I must say it exceeded my expectations. As we know, it’s a difficult process to create a sports anime that is fun for the audience even on the actual matches, which most of the times, if not handled carefully, can make the story a lot dull.
Story, as said, was a great work of balance. The games’ clever strategies and excess of movement is something i hadn’t seen in a while. Something to add is that they’re all real, no game move was created out of nowhere, only actual
...
volleyball players’ strategies or an adaptation of them. The matches are also variable, i don’t think there was any speciality repeated on each adversary the main team had to play with (besides on purpose). Always keeping up with new changes, my enjoyment was bigger as it progressed.
Surprised me when i noticed that there was gonna be no romance or personal dramas at all, in a bad and good way. I’m a fan of mixed genres, specially on the relationships area, but Haikyuu managed to be way better without it. The focus on only volleyball was a great way to envolve the friendship and rivalries between the players.
Art. Definitely one of the best i’ve seen in a sports anime! The thin lines and drawing style characteristic of Production IG was the perfect match for all the rush and movement of the characters. And actually also nicely used to complement the strategies visuals.
Sounds. Both openings’ and endings’ vocals and melodies were outstanding. None of them failed me, visuals and songs being related to give us the best experience possible.
Characters. All of them were technically and emotionally developed as matches progressed, both individually and as a team. Specially the friendship between the main two, who had their own obstacles with each other, was growing with every game and teamwork.
Overall and Enjoyment are definitely a 10 for me. My only problem was the slow progression of the relationship between Hinata and Kageyama. I’d have enjoyed it way more if they didn’t insist on making them rivals for more than 10 episodes.

I have some mixed feelings about Kakegurui. Gambling has been something not so common as a main topic in an anime, which might have made it confusing or a bad storytelling for some.
The story. As an adaptation of various luck-games, i feel like the anime did a pretty good job when representing them in a clever and fun way. But for most people outside Japan who never heard of a big part of the gambling styles, the extreme representation made it a lot more confusing.
Outside the theme, there isn’t much of a story or a background to anything. The gambling academy is there with
...
the rich and freaky children and that’s it. No why or how. Regardless, if you watch the anime with only the experiences of the characters in your head you’ll be able to enjoy it. Don’t look too deep for a story or a big plot, not even romance. “It’s all about gambling”, remember.
Art. For sure an outstanding one! The depth the extreme expressions of the characters and background added a lot more to the scenes, specially on the crazy gambling parts. Not just that, but the peculiar way they made it possible, running from the normal expressions you’d expect even in an action/drama anime.
The sounds. As well as the art, it was a complementary depth to it, very cleverly used in favour of the feelings.
Characters. It could have been a lot better in this aspect. As mentioned, no background for any of them. No why or how they are in the Academy. No why or how they are even friends. All the relationships between them seem forced and there’s no real talks about anything but gambling.
Enjoyment and overall. Regardless the lack of a story i enjoyed the overly acted scenes and all the strategies in general.

My experience with Hyouka was a good, but decrescent one. It started off great but as i got closer to the end, my disappointment kept rising. There were a few problems with the story, specially the extreme attention on not getting it out of the slice of life genre, which ended up making the whole plot pointless (if there was even one).
Story. As mentioned, it had the potential to be good. There was no need for a solid storyline and big revelations, Hyouka definitely could have worked its way to perfection with only the main genre.
Since the first episode, they kept rising the tension
...
and expectations on the characters and their relationship, or even the main’s mysterious way of solving puzzles. But as i kept watching it, it got dull, boring. The whole story so far was pointless for the ending, there was no conclusion. The whole building up of expectations was destroyed and the unexpected romance felt more like a try to make it end in a better way.
Art. What can i say? Kyoto Animation never disappoints. The style is on point and the playing with focus and brightness to create depth was perfectly used.
Sound. As well as the animation, the sounds were a great add to the mystery and depth of the story.
Characters. The relationships and bounding between them were nicely developed, but i feel like there could be a little more background to each one. Specially the boys’ friendship, it would be interesting to know how they met and also the girl, where did she even come from?
Overall, i’m a fan of slice of life, so regardless of the boring stretch, i really enjoyed it and the mysterious stories. One of the big reasons i didn’t give up on it was that awesome pilot and the animation itself.

I bumped into this looking for good anime movies that were famous during the season. Doukyuusei isn’t on the popular list, but it definitely did not disappoint me.
First off what caught my attention was the style and A-1 studio, which i’m a big fan of, but reading about the actual story made me even more excited to give it a try.
The story, being mainly focused on the boys’ romance was a very good integration of the LGBT community. Specially due to the aversion for it in Japan, categorized as a conservative and traditional country.
If you’re looking for a calm romance, without the drama
...
and the love-obstacles that come with it, you’re in the right place.
Art. Even though i expected the traditional style of A-1, the movie gave me more of a lazy-drawn version of it, which i loved anyway. The light animation was perfectly used to reinforce the story and feelings on it.
Characters. We can notice kind of a love cliche right here: one being extrovert, careless, wild. And the other being introvert, in most of the times the brain and shy. But that doesn’t mean it was a bad cliche.
I loved the making out scenes, not passing to the explicit and pornographic side. But being that gentle, timid yet passionate kissing.
I’d definitely grade my enjoyment/overall as a 9. It had the potencial to be a 10, if only they worked a little hard on the animation and the whole production in general.

Before watching the anime, i had read one or two chapters of the manga and heard about the story from a friend. From those i thought i already had some idea about how it was going to be and i was increbly anxious to watch it.
The story. I have to admit i was somewhat disappointed when i first watched it. From reading reviews and people commenting about it, i was sure it was supposed to be a pretty badass story. It did sound like THE story...on paper.
On the animation, though, it was portrayed in a fairly silly way, the comedy and sarcasm overlapped
...
the scary action filled story. That’s my only complaint in this point, but notice that this “little” detail ended up ruining a big part of my experience. Regardless, I have to say the idea was an original and the application was quite good. Specially the slow-cooked relationship between teacher and students made it more enjoyable and relatable
The art. I wasn’t used to this drawing style on the characters part. The thick lines were a bit of a problem for me, but that goes with taste. Although it did match with the teacher’s animation.
The characters. As mentioned on the story topic, I loved the slow development of the relationships in the classroom, as well as their own individual personality development. There was a good mix of different temperaments in the classroom. Also for the teacher, who was getting closer and closer to the kids, even though he was supposed to be the bad guy.
Enjoyment and overall. I had a fun time watching this, specially on the first and last episodes were the climax reached its highest point. It was nice seeing how the students got attached to sensei and vice versa, and how they were trying so hard to get away for him to live afterwards.

Zankyo No Terror brings us an original story, and after a long time in anime the main characters are put as antagonists to the rest of the world.
The story, at first, didn’t excite me a lot as i’m not a huge fun of loaded senseless action. As it progressed, though, it caught more and more my attention due to the backgroud reasons of the acts. But the main point why i rate this anime as a solid 10 is the mix of drama and fun puzzles, i had never seen the two together in such a perfect and complementary way. The thrill you get
...
with the fear of the bombs going off as the police tries their best to solve hard ass riddles is awesome.
The art. What amazed me on this one wasn’t the character’s style, but the beautiful scenes, the city and the details to buildings, nature and the environment in general. Mixing shadows and sunlight in a gentle way.
The characters. The addition of the victim girl with them ruined it for me. There was just no need for her
My enjoyment overall was a 9.

As a contradictory opinion, Tonari no Totoro was my least liked Ghibli movie. The story on paper seems awesome, but the application of it on the animation was not great. I realize that this is a classic, winner of many nominations and very nostalgic to most people, and i also do think it’s a good movie. But if you stop, think and analize it, the story was poorly told. It could have been a lot more than that.
My main problem with the story was that they took way too long to develop it to the near-climax point. Almost one full hour to present the two
...
sisters, their new house and the adventures around it, and then rushing the apparition of Totoro and its impact. Of course, you could categorize it as a slice of life as well, but that doesn’t fix the fact that there wasn’t a cohesive time for storytelling.
The art. No complaints, the characteristic and notorious style of Ghibli’s animation at its purest on this movie. As well as the beautiful attention to the background scenes, using them to them cleverly at their fullest as an addition to the segments in focus.
The sound. 5 seconds into the theme song were enough for me to be in love with it. Such a beautiful composition with a few notes and also a perfect match to the movie’s style and story.
Characters. Specially the two girls were very well developed, individually and as sisters. My only issue was a personal problem with their energetic personalities, there was a point it got way too annoying, mostly with Mei and her 24/7 screaming voice.
I’d rate my enjoyment and overall as a 7. The story had the potential and material to be way better than what it ended up being.

I would categorize Ano Hana as something more than a simple anime for recreation purposes. It’s something i’ll take for my life. It’s a life lesson, as cliche as it sounds.
The story. Throughout the anime, we shortly get into the lives of a group of friends. Or as it’s presented to us - ex-friends. The reasons of the distance that now exists between them is shown bit by bit, as well as everyone’s feelings.
The lost of a mutual friend can bound or destroy a relationship.
In Ano Hana’s case, the grief was portrayed as something they wanted to hide, a weakness, a taboo due to the
...
incident that lead to the death. The sadness, shame and guiltiness (within themselves or towards each other) were the main focus. It’s deeper than what the surface shows, and they do a good job showing that on the characters’ personalities.
The art. In this aspect, i have zero complaints. The drawing style matches perfectly the genre, it’s flooded with emotions but not flooded with lines. The expressions on the characters have intensity enough to add to the feelings, specially on the crying parts of it.
The sounds, be it in openings, endings or theme songs during the episodes were definitely a 10 for me. The sum of sentimental lyrics, sweet vocals and songs playing and overlapping at the exact needed moment complements the power of the narration.
Characters. There was, for sure, an awesome mix of personalities in here. The backgroud story with Menma was shown for every one of them, some happy, romantic and some with a antagony feel to it. But all of them very intimate, serving for the purpose of demonstrating how, no matter the relations between, all of the friends were extremely hurt and traumatized for life after losing such a dear friend. And we have to remember they were very young at the time. The author did a good job exhibiting how it marked them in that stage and how the feelings continued affecting as they grow up. Due to their age, it was just obvious they had no conditions of dealing with something as deep as death, as deep as grief. Only later on, after Menma’s appearance, they are capable of knowing why it happened, and realizing how they still had hate, blame and sadness in their hearts.
As for Menma, such a sweet character, but i still had some problems accepting her personality. She’s still a child, but sometimes her behaviour was quite annoying in my opinion.
I would grade my “enjoyment” and “overall” as an 8. It was a outstanding work and a very reflective and learning process for me. As said in the beginning, it’s deeper than the surface and you can see how the author tried his best to touch us with the story.
