If Game of Laplace disappointed you, UN-GO is another series that transfer classic Japanese crime writing to a modern/sci-fi setting, and actually provided some strong mysteries with intriguing situations. We even have another cute kid assistant!

Heroic bloodshed, unkillable fighters, and creepy children, with Mafia elements thrown in for for good measure. Gunslinger Girl is more measured, thoughtful and saddening piece, while Baccano boasts a wild storyline, black comedy and a lot of blood.

The female cyborg can be read as a vivid metaphor; the self-willed woman moulded by social machinery, and forced into a role for the purposes of others. In another sense, the ultimate warrior women are cut off from the 'natural' roles of parent, lover or wife. Although Alita has somewhat more freedom to search for her role than the Gunslinger Girls, both of these series use cyborgs to say a lot about freedom, identity and fighting, albeit in very different settings. Crazed cyberpunk, or convincing counter-terrorism, what's your poison?

Sarah: The Legend of Mother Sarah

Mother Sarah is in a very different time period, and on a far smaller scale, but shares Lone Wolf's stoic, unbreakable hero, wandering through a world of bottomless corruption. Ogami and Sarah are both strong fighters, unfailingly righteous, defend and strengthen the innocents they meet, and also very much practise the 'sink or swim' school of parenting...

Sarah: The Legend of Mother Sarah
|
A stoic, unstoppable warrior wanders the post-apocalyptic desert, striking down crazed, hulking enemies in a world gone bad...never get between a mother and her children. Apart from the obvious 'Mad Max'-like shared theme, Kenshiro and Sarah stand out for their righteous compassion as much as their strength. While Mother Sarah lacks the extravagant martial arts and strong well-backstoried supporting cast of Hokuto no Ken, it does convincingly show a world at war, and how so many tiny but vivid characters are tormented by it.
