I'm so upset. This movie was so beautiful. The animation was stunning (as usual for this show) and the story was heart-wrenching. The last letter she writes for the dying boy is devastatingly sad and made me cry. Her resolution with the major (who is alive now btw) was about to be the perfect growth moment for her. It was almost the perfect bittersweet ending for this story and then they fucked it all up. The idea that the love between the major and Violet was anything but a parental love is disgusting. The whole time the major has been illustrated as a father figure
...
for Violet. He took her in when she was young, vulnerable, alone, and lost. He raised her and sent her off to live her own life. The decision to reveal he is still alive is questionable already, but was done tastefully with him being too ashamed to see her being understandable for the story. Violet's resolution of realizing that she can live her own life and continue writing letters with her new family and not dwell on the major is beautiful and fitting for her arc. It would've been the perfect way to send it off. Then in the last few minutes of the whole franchise they fuck it all up. Violet not only hears the major (who was a dick to her) from miles away across the windy sea but immediately knows it's him and then jumps into the ocean from a giant ship and swims all the way to shore. He asks her to stay with him and abandon her whole life back at home where she is a successful writer and has her own friends who have genuinely cared about her over the years to be with him, an old fucking dude who has not only avoided reaching out to her even though he knew she was alive and missed him but also yelled at her when she travelled the sea just to see him. Mind you, he is supposed to be a father figure to her, not a love interest. At no point in the show has their love been shown as romantic. It has always been a father and daughter relationship. The major saying he has always loved Violet in that way at the end is fucking disgusting as well. When they met the major was 29 and Violet was 14. If the ending being contrived already wasn't bad enough, now the guy is a major pedophile too. This was the one way they couldn't have ended the story, anything at all would have been a better sendoff.
I almost don't feel that it's worth mentioning how beautiful the movie was up until the last 20 minutes. The ending makes everything beforehand feel pointless, like the storywriters don't care about their own story.
This just felt like a giant "fuck you" by the end.
