This anime aired in 2018 and, in my opinion, has been overlooked a little.
We had Grand Blue in Summer 2018 - which remains a favourite of mine - but solely as a comedy show, Asobi Asobase takes the title in recent years as best comedy anime.
Asobi Asobase is very reminiscent of Cromartie High School or Daily Lives of High School Boys: they're random, sketch based, and devoid of context. It's the type of comedy that, for me, makes anime funny. Many times shows try to shoehorn this type of comedy into their serious character dramas and fail miserably.
It's a type of comedy that only
...
works in small doses, admittedly. Asobi Asobase isn't a marathon show. It's something you watch a few episodes at a time when you want a good laugh from your anime - similar to Nichijo - with sketches that don't have too much continuity, meaning you can tune in to any episode and pretty much get the gist of what is going on. The episodes are split into sketch sections so it is very hard to take a skit out of context (as there is no context to begin with lol).
On a personal level, episode 10 is what sold it for me. The humour focuses around 'engrish' and the use of 'gairaigo' 外来語 in Japanese which in this setting is hilarious even without an understanding of Japanese. If nothing else, watch ep 10 with no context and see what you think.
All in all, this is well worth the watch, but for me, in 3-4 ep doses. It's a hilarious show, with daft characters and scenarios that make each episode an individually enjoyable watch.
Also, big shout out to Hina Kino as the VA for Hanako - one of the MCs - as she had such great diversity in her voice
