The BEM movie was a surprisingly enjoyable affair. To summarise my thoughts on the movie succinctly, it would be that there was a great premise and conceptual idea behind this, marred by mediocre execution with only sprinkles of brilliance and the potential of "what could have been".
Unlike the first season, the movie explores the desires and motivation of the main protagonist Bem in more than just a superficial level, significantly improving the amount of investment I had in this universes story from the get-go. Bem experiences a vast array of emotions and it is a treat to watch him confront these emotional conflicts,
...
it is however a shame that there wasn't more time invested into building on the supporting characters in order to really amplify the emotional pay-offs.
Whilst there are still inconsistencies, randomness and rapid-fire pacing issues, unlike the first season it doesn't bring you out of the experience in such a jarring manner with anywhere near as much frequency, leading to a much more pleasant viewing experience.
In terms of character design, the 3 protagonist monsters all got tune-ups to add more detail and intimidating aspects, fitting for Humanoid Monsters. Character designs for the main antagonist grunts of the show however lacked variation and that was particularly disappointing, but perhaps still preferable than a lot of the excessively "peculiar" and "outlandish" antagonist designs of the first season.
I'm not an audiophile, but I will say that the sound design and music were pretty good and in some moments, very hype.
Similarly with the artwork and animation in the show, it's nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done and treats you to a few scenes of gorgeous visual expression.
Overall, as a person that went in with 0 expectations after completing the train wreck that was the first season in order to satisfy my childhood nostalgia of the 2006 series, I had a blast watching this movie, and whilst it is no masterpiece by any means, it is certainly one of my favourites.
