Animation and themes-wise there are soo many parallells. The realizations about how we are harming the earth are deeply woven into these stories.

Ojamajo Doremi(translation: meddlesome/mischieveous witches) is a series full of bold witches apprentices bringing magic to a nonmagical world, like Kiki, only this time you get to learn so much more about the culture of witches, their long eccentric lives and their successful and sometimes less so attempts at coexisting with ordinary humans. It is one of my favourite series, definitely the coziest most emotionally complex magical girl series, even considering the characters young age.

Gokinjo Monogatari is the iconic predecessor of shoujo/josei series like Nana. Both mangas were written by Ai Yazawa.

Both series are atmospheric in nature, relying on tasteful grande soundtracks. Both series express a lot with choice colour palets, both have a mystique about them. Haibane Renmei features a community of characters but it's focused on self reliance and the isolation that in the end comes with constant inner struggle and vacant threats in the surrounding world. Both series deals with death and religion/spirituality in some way, in both knowledge is acquired through books. Both series build sympathetic characters with individual goals and aspirations despite limits put on their existence.

I love the action in this series. It handles lots of characters with ease and is just a great therapeutic(for anxious people like myself) series about young women in a dormitory working hard together to get good at their craft, building each other up and growing closer. Also I read them all as lesbians. ;D
