old-style drawing (and storytelling), set in ancient times, strong characters, shojo-style "emotion driven story", strong backup by old civilizations' legends and folklore.

old-style drawing (and storytelling), set in ancient times (well, way more ancient for pharaoh no haka), strong characters, shojo-style "emotion driven story"

Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

Himitsu no Ai-chan

There's a love story that begins as a rivalry on the side of the girl. both involve maid :D both girls fight or deny their sentiments, and are strong willed. Kaichou wa maid-sama is better imho, because the story of himitsu no ai chan seems to have evolved from a one volume story to a serialization, so the first chapters are too quick and go over a lot of things that could have been better thought out a little slower for a few extra chapters :).

Metro Survive

The two manga start off the same, a "sub-normal" hero getting trapped into a closed space with trains by an earthquake. Then, there's nothing, no more radios, no more contact with exterior, and the people trapped underground must find a way to survive. Dragon Head is way longer, so there's a lot more to its story than just this "trapped underground" thing, but you'll probably be hooked before it's even finished, because the situations are very similar at first, and the tension is always high, for maybe different reasons in the two works, but I think they're both enjoyable for the same reasons - the same feeling they give when you read them.

Sirius no Kizuato
add

Gunnm (battle angel alita as tasteless people refer to it) and Sirius' Scar are both about a girl in a cyborg body doing battle to survive. both have a somewhat similar setup in a futuristic world almost ruined by war (with Gunnm being more on the cyberpunk side), both gally and sirius have lost their memories. Gunnm is way better, though, because Sirius' Scar was cut short after 4 volumes, were Gunnm, even without Gunnm Last Order as a continuation (the original manga has a beautiful end, even if somewhat too quick and too happy), is more action-packed and then concentrate on its characters more heavily and with much more success. To sum it up, Sirius' Scar only touch what Gunnm delivers. They're both very similar on the outside, but Gunnm is much more enjoyable and thoroughly a masterpiece where Sirius' Scar is a somewhat lacking copycat.

both about mechanical girls, wings of vendemiaire comes from the twisted mind of Bokurano and Narutaru creator, Kitoh Mohiro, so expect a whole different level of story. very superficial similarity, but the twisted world of Sirius' Scar comes as an echo for the twisted characters you encounter in wings of vendemiaire. both makes you wonder deep about fate and consequences of your actions.

Agharta

Sirius no Kizuato

mysterious girl, futuristic world filled with barren wasteland as a setup, and then battles and action ensue, with a little something from the girl's past that set it apart from typical action manga. Sirius' Scar was a quick-read and I dropped Agharta near volume 7, so this recommendation might not be a good one, I'm sorry if that's the case.
