This review contains slight spoilers, but I'm not going deep in the plot itself.
So I was glad to see Charlotte had appeared on Netflix, I had it on my plan to watch list and I had heard it was very similar to Angel Beats, a show that I really enjoyed. To start things, premise was interesting, main character who did seem to have that Yagami Light like evil genius streak going on. Art looked good, nothing special but pleasant in my eyes. OP was good and ED was awesome. Strong average score of 7.9 on MAL. This must be a good anime, right?
The
...
show started rather strong in my opinion, as it's only a 13 episode one, it didn't spend too long with build up, just kicked things going right away, which suited me. First 5 or 6 episodes were rather enjoyable slice of life comedy, characters and humor weren't as good as Angel Beats's for example, but I had a feeling that the show was going to end up being a good one.
The second arc, of tragedy and redemption that takes 2 episodes felt kinda rushed, but was still understandable, and didn't bother me with a sudden tone shift too much. But then, the main plot started to reveal.
The main plot, starting in episode 9 adds in time travel, dementia, under ground facilities filled with evil scientist and terrorists is the point where this far a decent show starts to go downhill incredibly fast. So much total nonsense is happening in these last 5 episodes that I don't even know where to begin. With incredible plot holes, plot conveniences, edginess and an totally out of place rushed romance pack this sequence so full of shit it manages to beat what some other garbage shows are able to fit in an arc of full 24 episodes.
A sudden tone shift, and out of place edginess were a problem for me when watching Angel Beats, causing me to only like it, instead of loving it. But Charlotte takes these aspects of a whole another level, and that isn't even the worst of it.
I was totally overwhelmed by the amount of stupidity this second half provided, and I was honestly getting numb with how bad every moment I watched was. By the final episode, I was sure I was watching a parody of some sort, but apparently that isn't the case. This show is supposed to be taken seriously?
At the beginning, I stated I enjoyed the first half of the show. Some light school life drama comedy with a developing romance with generic, but still adequate characters and a dash of sci-fi would have been an OK show to watch with not too much thought. But the mess that was main plot, sudden tone shift, some of the worst type of tries to be overly edgy, gaping plot holes and absurdly horrid pacing in the second half left a total taste of shit after the show ended.
After this nonsense, it doesn't really matter that half of the show was enjoyable, that would have deserved at least a score of a strong 5. The second half screws up so incredibly bad it just blows away all the redeeming qualities the show had.
This is clearly a 1/10 show on my scale, and out of 100+ animes I have watched one of the worst ones yet, and I have seen quite a bit of shit shows already.
If one cant turn off their brain completely, or has even a slight bit of critical sense towards shows/movies, I really cant see them being able to enjoy this crap.
