I urge anyone who's interested in this anime to watch it. I think the top couple of reviews are being much to critical of the film. Although the story of this film is mostly symbolic and a bit off a mess, and the characters don't have much depth, the world this film creates is more than enough of a reason to watch it.
With a team of veteran filmmakers behind metropolis, it's no wonder that every frame of animation is a joy to look at. For a film made in 2001 it still holds up incredibly well today. The colors are vibrant, the detail is

striking and both work together to bring the city of metropolis to life. I think the use of music in the film is done very well. Chases sequences have fast pieces to keep the viewer engaged, while emotional scenes have slower more powerful pieces to add weight. While the characters are mostly used as vehicles for the plot, there are stand out moments that let the relationships shine through, including a very memorable end sequence.
I think that the film fails to capture the essence of the 1927 metropolis, but takes elements form it that makes the film stand up on it's own as a classic. If you watch the film for what it is then I think you'll be pleasantly surprised and might find yourself thinking about the film long after you've seen it like I was.
