Covering the weakest story arc of Arknights was bound to be difficult, but a lot of its problems can be mitigated with good directing. Which unfortunately wasn't the case.
Arknights the anime at its strongest is very atmospheric, with a distinct sense of grittiness and realism. It presents itself unlike most other anime, with a noticeable lack of hype and action, opting towards colder efficiency and politics. Tension is built via intrigue rather than drama. Fights are lacking but efficient. Flashiness isn't the priority, which also works in favor of the lower budget.
However, there are times when the atmosphere is broken with jarring anime-trope moments. Certain
...
scenes of talking just a bit too long in emergencies, of sudden character appearances teleporting into the frame, of awkward still shots in combat, of oddly tropey dialogue. Call me nitpicky if you wish, but small details can make big differences. If Arknights is going to conduct itself as more mature than its competitors, it should lean fully into this atmosphere, rather than meet half-way there. An anime that is bleak and mature doesn't have to be devoid of lighthearted moments, but it shouldn't come at the cost of losing its realistic atmosphere.
Another nitpick is the lack of bold camera angles and editing. To further enhance the visual atmosphere of efficiency and tension in urgent scenes, more cuts in editing would better give a feeling of a quickened pace. The first few episodes did well with their more tactical 'step-by-step' approach to the problem as it fits the conflict, but midway through, the angles feel unimaginative and somewhat deceptive in how the environment is portrayed from cut to cut, especially as the conflict becomes much more personal than before. It also gets bogged down by a lot of unnecessary dialogue and interactions, slowing the urgent pace further.
Despite these issues, there has been plenty of good with the anime adaptation. It provides plenty of worldbuilding and lore to sink one's teeth into. It gives multiple conflicts of interests, exploring through a limited perspective the different factions and motivations. The art and animation looks aesthetically pleasing and clean, especially the environmental art which helps give each location a distinct sense of self.
As an Arknights player, this anime is definitely not without its flaws, but it has enough good for me to hang on to. The weakest arc will pass and springboard the story into much more heart-wrenching territory. I look forward to seeing where it continues next.
Additional Notes:
1. I only covered criticism that I think haven't been covered yet by others. Of course, I believe that the music, characterization, and plot is lacking, but I don't feel the need to tackle the subject when others have done so already.
2. This review was made when I am up to Episode 5 of the anime. It's likely that my opinions would change as I expect Episode 6 and onward to be higher quality.

I couldn’t laugh, I couldn’t chuckle, heck I couldn’t even smile at the humor.
Usually I’m good with cute girls doing cute things types of anime but this just doesn’t work for me.
I suspect that this is a bad show to go into after watching Nichijou, which is thousands of times better than Endro in my opinion, thus my lack of appreciation.
Story is fair, at least up to where I dropped. The beginning events felt to me as if they just happened just for the sake of it. The demon lord time traveled and the story shifts to the hero’s party. The events that occur just....
...
feel too much like a PowerPoint presentation slideshow, where events come slide after slide. There are multiple time skips in the year just so the “desired” events come onto the screen faster. Also, this story is centered around the 4 girls in the hero party, not the demon lord time traveler exacting revenge, which was quite a disappointment.
The art is fair, not much to say about it. The art style is okay. However, I have this nagging feeling that the art palette for this series just seems a little off. In the end, art is nothing really worth mentioning.
The problem with the sound is that it is easily ignorable. Over the course of the four episodes I watched, I only noticed 3 times where a soundtrack played (disregarding OP and ED). For the rest of the time, I only thought that there was silence. This might be due to the fact that I was very bored and I may zone out but this is still bad. Also, the soundtracks that I heard are nothing to really compliment about.
The characters are, to me, boring. The interactions, to me, are boring. As stated in the beginning, I didn’t have any reaction towards the humor. I could understand it as humorous but not really react to it. The characters themselves just aren’t good in my opinion. Watching them go on and on is quite taxing for me. I don’t want to think more about this subject.
This was tasing to watch. I dragged myself for these 4 episodes, hoping for something good. I think I was trying to cheer myself up after ending Nichijou. I guess I achieved that in a way, since I am now full of disappointment with the fact that I wasted my time with this show. I couldn’t get this show at all.
I was deceived. I thought that this would be a humorous revenge story about the demon lord time traveler stopping heroes before they grow. I was right.... before I was wrong. The demon lord is NOT the main character; that title belongs to the heroes. The demon lord is NOT exacting revenge; she was before she realized its futility. Honestly, I believe this show had wasted a ton of potential going down the path it chose.
Some people may like it. I don’t. Some people may laugh. I didn’t.
In the end, I think I would’ve still rated this show relatively low, even if I wasn’t in this unfortunate watch order.
I won’t recommend this. Though you may find others who do.

This is the best slice-of-life anime I’ve watched.
Perfect for you when you simply want to relax, perfect for a couple smiles and chuckles, dammit, I need more of this.
Slice of life anime has no story, kinda. I’m judging the events. The events are scattered, the the focus shifts constantly from the main cast to side characters to peaceful scenery. I enjoy the way they scatter the events but keep it loosely connected, so that it doesn’t really feel as if the story is jumping around constantly.
I really enjoy the art style. It is simple, cute, and expressive. The distinct art style makes it
...
stand out from other animes. Though many may consider it as simple and unappealing, I think this style fits the mood and the story very well.
The sound is very good. The soundtrack is noticeable and conveys mood very nicely. There are many repeated soundtracks that signal certain events. Most of the soundtracks are light and positive which conveys the atmosphere very nicely. Some soundtracks stand out too. I especially love the Helvetica Standard soundtracks.
The characters don’t need to develop out and background checked to be considered great. I love the cast for who they are. The interactions are colorful and comedic and coupled with the variety of expressions, which elevated the humor a lot. I feel like I got to know the characters personally, so the characters are very fleshed out. Only problem is that some side characters don’t really get much screentime and a certain character of the main cast may not be to some audience members’ liking personality-wise.
During a pandemic like the current one, relaxing and staying calm while watching such shows is truly blissful. I enjoyed this very much. The humor is nicely done. The presentation somehow makes it so that the peaceful scenery scenes that are sometimes put between POV switches don’t feel boring. The way the anime is able to keep your attention is truly a wonder. What would be considered a mundane situation to watch somehow keeps your focus on it. I can’t say that I have any bad moments with this show.
About the humor: it is mostly hit or miss. Thankfully, I fall in the mostly hit side. Some of the humor can be based off of Japanese puns or are more directed to a Japanese audience. I would like to also mention that the character that I mentioned above that people may not like? Her interactions with other cast members is played for comedy and.... may not be to people’s liking.
Nichijou is truly the most unique slice of life anime I have seen so far. The presentation and interactions are so different from all others I’ve seen.
Calm yourself, clear your mind, and enjoy. Don’t think too much. Forget everything else that’s going on in life. Just relax as you watch.

I feel that this show is a very subjective show, where it all comes down to whether you like it or not to see how it will be rated. I believe that objectively looking at this is very difficult and I can only recommend this to people who share my tastes. I suppose this is what one would call “niche”.
The thing I really like about the story is that there is not exactly a single story to follow. Everyone’s point of view is different, and though the events are the same, the way it is portrayed is different on character to character. The goals
...
are different for each character, and the show maximizes off of this, giving a very interesting and complex storyline to follow. Because of this, it can be a bit confusing and it doesn’t really do much to tie it together. The events that go on make sense, and I don’t see any obvious plotholes. However, I do have a word with how the episodes are organized. Some episodes present an idea at the end, which is normal for most shows, but in this case, it doesn’t really work well. In the end, this is a small issue. The story is honestly very subjectively judged.
The art is great when it needs to be. The background is beautiful and realistic. The weaponry is cool and deadly. The action is exciting and investing. UFOtable did great work on this. I would like to point out that there were moments where the background had a drop in quality, which occurs in the more talkative information-giving scenes. Also, CG, which isn’t bad, but had a few questionable moments here and there. Another point, the art style of the characters took some time getting used to. Just a point to be made. Finally, the presentation is very well done. I still remember the scene in episode 4 I think where (minor spoiler) the gigantic floating monster slowly drifted down from the sky. Man, that really was expertly done. (Spoiler end)
The sound is truly something to marvel at. The soundtracks are wonderful, exhilarating, emphatic, soothing, melancholic, emotional. I absolutely love the way the music is done. Although the soundtrack is not memorable (such a certain soundtrack from Madoka Magica), it truly adds to a scene, taking your breath away along with the great art. I would like to point out that usually, later in a series, I start to zone out from the music. However, in this case, I have never once (I believe) missed when the music came in. Truly fantastic music. Also, the sound effects in general, really great job. I simply can’t describe how much the sound effects added to this show. The sound is amazing.
The characters are definitely well fleshed out in some way or another. The main cast showed a bit of development and the side characters are helpful, important, and likeable. The interactions are okay. Just okay. I would like to add here that the portrayal of character is something that is challenging to pull off, especially if it is the “good guy but forced to be bad” type. There was a character that I found a bit... difficult. The comment section were less forgiving than I am. However, the other characters can really make up for it. The other members are very likeable, each with their own unique personalities and stories.
It was a bit slow at first. My enjoyment increased more and more as time went on and I became invested very quickly. I only thought of bingewatching this and didn’t even think a thought about dropping this. The action was brilliantly done and deaths were emotional. There were two points where I almost started tearing up (I have never cried or teared up when watching anime, getting this far is an achievement). Only thing keeping this from a 10 is a few frustrating moments with a certain character.
Overall, I can’t really see myself recommending this, despite how much I really like this. But give it a try, see if it fits your tastes. Who knows, you might uncover a gem. Watch if you like great action and heart crushing deaths.

According to our math teachers, density equals mass divided by volume. However, i invented the alternative equation: density equals whoever the fuck is the protagonist of Infinite Stratos (yes I did not remember his name).
Density is okay. Density can be funny. Density can be character development.
Density was not okay. Density was not funny. Density was not helpful in anyway whatsoever.
I am usually okay with the dense harem protagonist. However, this anime destroyed that. Okay, but if you add some interesting characters and plot?
Nope, didn’t get it.
I’m going to be brief:
I dropped in the middle of episode 4. I didn’t get to the point
...
where I believe the story/goal/mission will be explained. Can’t say anything for that. The events that occurred so far are mundane and cliched. I am usually okay with cliched events if they presented it nicely. This was not presented nicely. This was presented in the most disgustingly mind numbing way it could. I had multiple “why the fuck am I watching this” moments because of this.
The art is mediocre. The CGI could have improvement. The presentation is simple. Nothing more to be said.
The sound is decent. Very very decent. Like, nothing sticks out. To me, the sound didn’t make much of a difference in any way. I kind of notice it, and say “oh, the music is playing” and not pay any attention to the music. You are supposed to pay attention to the music though! How else will it make a battle more epic or a sad scene more somber? The sound was so decent that it barely made a difference.
Characters are poor. The main character is boring and dense. The side characters all outshine him tons. I only made it to episode 4 thanks to the side characters. Actually, most of the side characters are also poor, except a few. Those few were decent. Never have I ever rooted against an MC so much. I wanted someone to break the MC’s face, someone to top him, someone to change him. The interactions can be okay, but most make me frustrated, due to the MC. I want to make a statement here: I’d rather watch ants slowly crawling around, picking up leaves, building a nest and shit than watch the MC’s mind numbing interactions.
It was dreadful. It felt like my intelligence was being insulted. The only thing I can say is pretty okay would be the action and fights. But even then, it’s not that good. I can’t offer any praise whatsoever about this anime. To me, it is simple generic fodder used to recalibrate our reviewing standards, to know that there is still complete utter shit that comes out with other great shows.
Usually, I’m okay with harem shows. I’m also good with Mecha. Infinite Stratos does the action decently, but everything else is a flop. The romance is bad, the characters are bad, and I am willing to wager that the story itself is bad.
Can I recommend this? No. Will I ever recommend this? No. Should anyone ever watch this? Yes, definitely watch, this shit will help you understand that no matter how bad you think something else is, there is always worse.
Goddamn, I thought this would be alright. I trusted the rating too much. Even Arifureta and Maou Sama Retry, two relatively modern unhealthy easily consumable shows, are way better than whatever this pile of shit is.
I apologize to those who actually liked this show. It’s just....it really hurt me and I really want to hurt it back.

I was considering calling this a masterpiece. It was close, with a few more things to polish, but it was definitely great.
The story is intriguing. It keeps me hooked and motivates me to continue watching. I find the premise to be very unique (for me, I’m not exactly a veteran weeb yet) and I enjoy the concept a ton. The setting is interesting, because of the rumors and worldbuilding (well, setting-building). As for the storyline, it is very solid. I enjoy watching the events unfold and the main cast taking action to each situation they are put in. I see no obvious plot holes. Very
...
good emotional scenes, I may add. Being the emotionless freak I am, being able to feel moved by something is quite an achievement. The only problem with the story is that it can be a bit confusing at times and because episode 11. Explain later.
The art is very stylistic and well-done. I enjoy the artstyle and how it makes things more unique. The visual presentation is interesting, almost similar to that of manga panels. The only problems I have is that I noticed very very occasionally, the eyes were.....defective from a side view. And also episode 11. Explain later.
The sound was good. It stands out, which is a plus. A few OSTs really resonates with me. It also helps with tone and atmosphere. However, I slowly noticed less and less of it as time went by. Also, it wasn’t perfect, which is expected of shows.
The characters are great. They all know their roles and stick to it. Information about characters are presented very nicely. The characters slowly change over the course of the season (big plus for character development). The characters visually are unique (I could easily recognize them alone). I enjoy the cast’s personalities too. This leads to great interaction between the members of whichever faction/group/side they are on. The actions seem realistic enough too. Few problems. Some moments make it seem like the fights/action isn’t that serious when it is supposed to be (especially ep 11, explain later). Also, the characters themselves can be confusing as to who they are against and if they truly are against them (ep 11, explain later).
I enjoyed this a ton. I didn’t expect things to go so well and smoothly. The transition from my last anime (Darwin’s Game) to this one was a bit jarring but I adapted quickly to the interesting premise. I loved the art, characters, and story. My enjoyment didn’t drop significantly at all (exception:episode 11).
So episode 11; why am I beating this to the ground? I didn’t like it. More specifically, the second half of episode 11 (kitsune udon is the reason why the first half is good). About this half of the episode: the animation changed to that of a more non serious tone (not exactly chibi or loss of detail but more bolder outlines, sudden movements, simpler designs, etc). It killed the tone. The conversation between the characters was a bit confusing (the art didn’t help). This confused me a ton, too much to explain why. It just seemed as if the conversation wasn’t that important when the topic is dead serious. My enjoyment plummeted a ton. When they started fighting, animation quality jumps back to normal and everything was fine. I believe that these scenes were probably a vulnerable area in the story, where you either make it or break it. So much important information is transmitted to the viewer (not just in-story info but visual info). It seemed as if the budget ran low so the company was like “F it, this scene is hard to pull off anyways, we won’t use SUPERIOR animation on them just talking, nah, we save it for later”. This half of the episode is a reason why I didn’t give a 10 to the anime. I don’t like singling out errors and butcher the entire thing but this error really is too painful to ignore.
Overall: watch this. Just do it. It is super interesting to watch. Can’t wait for second season. Btw, I noticed that this season’s animes are really good. Either that or I’m not poking around in the bad areas. I feel that if I keep at it with good ones, a slightly worse one will be butchered to death. Hopefully, a shit but popular anime comes around so I can recalibrate my standards...
Have you heard about this rumor? If this anime gets enough support, the odds of getting a second season increases. However, if it does not, the story will not continue and we’ll stagnate here with a discontinued story. Applies only to anime-only people. Manga readers always find a way.

I enjoyed this. A lot. Surprisingly so, in fact.
My enjoyment of this series is probably why I rate it highly and because I can’t wait for a second season (if it gets a thumbs up). Moving on.
The goal is clear: bash the guy behind Darwin’s Game. That’s exactly what the MC Kaname is going to do. At least that is what he is meant to do. The goal is unrealized at first, but by the end, the goal is set in stone. This first season’s story is like an opening or prologue to the real story; it sets up the goal and introduces the game
...
and characters. The events that occur during the season make sense: noob hunting? Check, there are assholes out there. Hunting popular people? Check, people ARE assholes (and suicidal). In-game special events? Check, just like a normal game. Clan wars? Check, I’m not explaining this. So the mechanics make sense. The mechanics and details are explained, sometimes quickly or at easily missed scenes so that can make things confusing. So in the end, the story is pretty solid I believe.
The art is pretty good. The setting is well drawn and the battles are great. The character expressions can be truly intense at times. The art is very good.
The sound is simply good. The music helps enhance battles. Although, as the series progressed, I started to stop noticing the music and more on the story. Not sure if it’s lack of music, good story writing, or bad music.
The characters are very good. The MC changed a lot during this season, though I can’t say that for the side characters. The introductions of characters mostly made sense. I enjoy the entire cast’s personalities. The interactions were interesting rather than comedic, which is harder to pull off, so props to that. Most of the main cast’s story is explored but some are still left in the dark, and if I were to guess, the second season would explore that aspect a bit more. Special mention to the Florist: great episode, good backstory, felt movement in my cold frozen heart.
I really enjoyed this. Yes, I said that already, and I’m going to say this again. I really enjoyed this. In my honest opinion, which I am free to express, I believe that Darwin’s Game is better than Mirrai Nikki. When I first entered this anime, I expected something similar to Future Diary but I got something much more: better characters, a better death game system, interesting battles, more people to know about. Darwin’s Game simply had more. I entered with low expectations but I got a lot out of this.
Conclusion: watch this. Think a bit. Understand what’s going on. Most of all, have fun.

I remember when I saw that this was coming out. I was like “Whoa, can’t believe Madoka Magica gets another series.”
I was underwhelmed. Even after looking at the MAL score and a few reviews. If I were to explain this in relation to the original, I’d say it’s like meeting a friend of a friend: you just sorta know you can’t exactly get along despite similar qualities as your friend. Review start:
I’m pretty sure that the story is that the MC Iroha wants to find her sister. I stress pretty sure because there is a lot of stuff going on. The story loses a
...
bit of focus here and there. Sometimes the detours make up for it but sometimes not. I feel that the pacing can be good most of the time but bad other times. The events and details aren’t completely explained, which made for some confusing scenes. Thankfully, I always read the comments after each episode so I was able to understand what was going on. The problem is that the anime doesn’t explain much until the very end. I mean, usually you explain it all a bit of time before the end. Also the anime had several moments that doesn’t reach its full potential. I noticed that some parts of the story is similar to that in the original, but not as well done. I couldn’t truly immerse myself into the story as I did with the original.
The art is beautiful. I love how they kept the abstract yet detailed witches as well as how the eerie scenes were directed. Camera angle is super important and this anime executes it very well, just like the original. However, it is not completely perfect and had some awkward transitions here and there. The background and scenery art is beautifully done, with the colors and shading and intricate details.
The sound is fantastic. I love how they kept one of the most prominent OST from the original. It truly brought nostalgia and a sense of eeriness. The other soundtracks are nice and fit in nicely with the mood, enhancing the experience. I would also like to point out that the silence was well done. Having control over sound and silence truly shows expertise with the audio. However, there are a few spots where the music just doesn’t seem to feel right. I don’t know what it is about but I think that’s just me.
The characters aren’t really good. I didn’t really like most of the characters. I also felt that some of them are thrown in there, just to be pushed aside later. The characters seem a bit one dimensional and there isn’t much change with them I believe. The character interactions seem well enough. The backstories are explored, but I sometimes get a feeling that backstories are there just so it checks off the box. I also can’t help but compare some of the characters to the original’s cast, which lowered my character appreciation even further. The inclusion of some of original cast was interesting but it seemed the be one of the few factors that kept me going. After all of that negativity, I want to say something positive: the character designs are cool and unique. They are all easily recognizable and they all are differentiable.
The enjoyment went up and down, and it slowly went down and down as it neared the end. In fact, I considered multiple times to drop this at the last episode but I continued due to sheer loyalty to the original. It’s not that it’s bad but that I just can’t seem to enjoy it as much as I wish to. Referring back to earlier, it’s like meeting a friend of a friend. I will probably watch the second season if it comes out, probably enthusiastic about it too (false hope that it will be great), but as of right now, I would take a hard pass.
I expected better. I wanted better. This was just too confusing here and there. It was a good series but it isn’t a Madoka Magica level series. Whereas the original was an experience, this was a presentation of the experience, but with many differences.
I will still be looking forward to see how things play out. In the end, look at the score, not the review.

It was refreshing for me. As of late, I was getting bogged down by some rather underwhelming action animes so this change was quite jarring for me. Thankfully, I was able to get into this quickly, and adapt to the genre this is.
The story is typical for a slice-of-life (but not really) comedy. That is, there is not really a story but more like a series of events. This is typical so the overarching story/plot won’t be judged. The events that take place makes sense. The setting works well with the story, though I would like to see a bit more world building if possible.
...
Things happen, characters and occurrences are introduced, and it works out nicely. It is simple but well done.
The art is good. Not amazing. Good. The brighter colors fit well with the theme and it helps add to the fact that things aren’t too serious. This is a good thing since art must be able to portray the atmosphere.
The sound is something I can’t focus on too much. It’s okay. I’m really bad with listening specifically for music, so unless it is amazing or catches me on a good time, I mostly won’t notice music too much. What I heard was okay. The music catered toward the story, which was nice. However the music kind of flew under my radar mostly. Doesn’t add much IMO.
The characters are well done. Each character is unique in personality and design. The interactions are quite comedic, and I believe this is where the show shines. I enjoyed each character but I have to say that there isn’t much development at all. It seems that the characters are thrown in just to interact, similar to a puppet show for children. They talk, have fun, a new puppet gets thrown in, they talk, they have fun, so on. This makes the characters seem static, stagnant, and too in-the-moment. Though, this wasn’t too big of a problem for me.
I enjoyed this anime quite a lot. I was able to press the next button with motivation after each episode, which is rare for me. This wasn’t the greatest piece of entertainment I enjoyed but I could definitely say that I cannot wait for season 2.
Overall, I think this is a fun piece of fiction. It doesn’t seem real at all, which is fine, and the comedy is well done. There is also bits of information here and there about the animals themselves, making this show somewhat comparable to Cells At Work, but more comedy rather than educational.
Good show, I recommend, have fun.

I still wonder why people have such a strong dislike for this anime.
Whatever, this is my review so here goes:
Story-wise, it is simple: pissed man and his gang go murderize some goblins. Simple, straightforward. The story is one where there are many events rather than one overarching goal to achieve, which makes sense as that’s how the story is supposed to be. There are no noticeable plotholes (for me at least) and the story is pretty consistent. Not the best story, but a good forward moving story. I’m satisfied with this.
The art is pretty good. Good fights, good bloodshed, good many other points. It
...
doesn’t stand out but it’s a dark sort of art that fits the story. The expressions are very well done and the goblins are disgustingly well drawn.
Too long ago I watched this, don’t remember sound. I enjoyed the OP though.
The characters don’t need to be original. That is what I believe. As long as they interact properly, have good qualities, and have meaning to the story, they are good. Though, the fact they have no names is quite irritating to me when I wish to refer to specific characters. The enigmatic Goblin Slayer is a simple but IMO good lead, with the party helping him change, or “regain his humanity”. Goblin Slayer changes subtly through the anime, slowly relying and leaning on his party, and doing things that he would normally never consider. This story is about him, and how he changes. I also enjoy the entire cast’s personalities and interactions, which helps drive forward the story this anime presents. Small moments of humor are nicely placed too.
I really enjoyed this anime. A lot. I naturally enjoy seeing blood and gore incorporated in anime since it brings realism, darkness, and grittiness (I am not a serial killer, or corpse fetishizer or whatever). The interactions are really lighthearted and the story makes sense.
Few (a lot of) words here: this anime does not promote rape, woman abuse, or whatever bad thing you can think up of. The rape scene in the beginning is, IMO, necessary. Similar to how Madoka Magica surprised viewers on their perspective of magical girls, Goblin Slayer showed us their perspective on goblins, up close and personal. I firmly believe that shock can be a good thing in anime, and that this shock scene is necessary. After all, this is the best way to instantly destroy all notions of “Looky here, a goblin, imma yeet his ass”. If this scene was replaced by some kid going “Oh, btw, goblins rape women and shit” then the viewer would not get this fact engrained in them. Also, this scene is a great way to introduce Goblin Slayer since his professionalism is undeniable and his enigmatic ways are introduced. By introducing him amidst the violence, the connection is clearly made between him and the goblins.
Sum up: violence, blood, death, badass protagonist, interesting development, tactics, cleansing of disgusting filth, I enjoyed this very much
Btw this is 18+. Don’t worry, nothing uncensored will show. Mostly blood, guts, brutality and stuff. If you get scarred for life, you can’t blame this anime, but rather your ignorance.
